Food drive to commemorate World Hunger Day

The Citizen19-05-2025
Gearing up for World Hunger Day on 28 May, NPO Walk in Faith is rallying the community, schools and businesses to lend a hand to help raise awareness about the plight of many – the daily struggle for food.
As an organisation that assists the vulnerable and needy with food hampers and school lunch packs, Walk in Faith calls on everyone to come together and make a contribution of non-perishable items for redistribution to those in need.
Founder Merinda Ackerman said this is not just another day on the calendar, but a chance for Zululanders to come together and make a real difference.
Arboretum Primary School has heeded the call, handing over a massive haul of foodstuffs collected by the school last week.
'World Hunger Day is an annual day focused on raising awareness and encouraging action to end world hunger. And this is a reminder that millions of people globally struggle with food insecurity and malnutrition,' said Ackerman.
'Imagine if every step we took, every smile we shared, and every little donation we made added up to a future where no one had to worry about their next meal. Walk in Faith is all about believing in the power of community.
'It is about knowing that you and I together can transform hunger into hope.
'Whether you're donating, volunteering, or simply sharing our message, every act of kindness is a stride towards change, and often the smallest gestures spark the biggest ripples.
'This month, let us lace up our sneakers, open our hearts, and walk this journey side-by-side to join this challenge and create a world where compassion triumphs over hunger.'
If you would like to make a donation of food, contact 081 5382331. Deliveries can be made to 38 Raphia Palm, Arboretum, Richards Bay.

Fact vs fiction: Viral lion video an AI-generated clip

A video of a lion walking into a South African supermarket and helping itself to massive steaks on the shelves has been debunked as fake. The video clip has been shared widely across several social media platforms, garnering millions of views from all sides of the world. However, fact checking NGO Africa Check earlier this week confirmed that the video is, in fact, an AI-generated clip. The video has been made in such a way that it appears to be CCTV footage, and shows a massive male lion entering a supermarket and devouring meat from the shelves. According to Africa Check's full story, while numerous social media accounts have shared the video as legitimate footage, the original TikTok video carries the label: 'Creator labelled as AI generated'. While the initial parts of the video could pass as real, about halfway through, the meat appears decidedly fake. Watch the original video here: Don't have the ZO app? WATCH: Church takes uMfolozi community plight into their own hands

WATCH: Church takes uMfolozi community plight into their own hands Ivangeli Lokudumisa Church congregants under uMfolozi Municipality in northern KZN took service delivery shortcomings into their own hands recently. The church members built a temporary pedestrian bridge to help safeguard children and community members ahead of the imminent reopening of schools. Although a rudimentary, temporary measure, the bridge will put an end to schoolchildren having to remove their shoes and other items of clothing as they do when crossing the submerged Mhlahlaneni bridge on the P152 between KwaMbonambi and Sokhulu.
