WATCH: Church takes uMfolozi community plight into their own hands
Ivangeli Lokudumisa Church congregants under uMfolozi Municipality in northern KZN took service delivery shortcomings into their own hands recently.
The church members built a temporary pedestrian bridge to help safeguard children and community members ahead of the imminent reopening of schools.
Although a rudimentary, temporary measure, the bridge will put an end to schoolchildren having to remove their shoes and other items of clothing as they do when crossing the submerged Mhlahlaneni bridge on the P152 between KwaMbonambi and Sokhulu.

Fact vs fiction: Viral lion video an AI-generated clip
A video of a lion walking into a South African supermarket and helping itself to massive steaks on the shelves has been debunked as fake. The video clip has been shared widely across several social media platforms, garnering millions of views from all sides of the world. However, fact checking NGO Africa Check earlier this week confirmed that the video is, in fact, an AI-generated clip. The video has been made in such a way that it appears to be CCTV footage, and shows a massive male lion entering a supermarket and devouring meat from the shelves. According to Africa Check's full story, while numerous social media accounts have shared the video as legitimate footage, the original TikTok video carries the label: 'Creator labelled as AI generated'. Springs seniors honour Mandela with biscuits for local children
GEDULD – In celebration of Nelson Mandela Day on July 18, the Springs Senior Citizen Club brought smiles to young faces by handing out 67 packets of homemade biscuits to children in Geduld. The outreach, part of their 67 minutes of service, took place at the Geduld Methodist Church on Monday, where they were warmly welcomed by Pastor Jonathan Coates. Club manager Pauline Houghton said the club wanted to honour Mandela's legacy during Mandela Month by doing something meaningful for the community. 'As an NPO, it's part of our mission to give back,' said Houghton. 'The church already provides food for the children, but not sweet treats. So we decided to make it special by baking biscuits.' She added that the club consulted with Pastor Coates to ask what was needed most. 'He suggested we do something for the children who come to the church regularly.' Thirty volunteers from the senior centre pitched in to bake and pack the biscuits, using funds raised by the club. 'Outreaches like this help raise the visibility of the senior centre. 'There are many people in Springs who are struggling. Right now, we're focusing on helping the children, but later this year, we also hope to support the soup kitchen,' said Houghton. After receiving their biscuits, the children were also given toys that had been donated to the church. Pastor Coates expressed his gratitude to the senior club for their thoughtful gesture. 'Moments like this help children feel seen and appreciated,' he said. 'Nelson Mandela's first love was children, and we must continue with that passion.' He added that Mandela Day should serve as a reminder to act with kindness throughout the year, not just on July 18. 'Mandela Day is about remembering Madiba's values and practising them in our communities. It's about doing something small that someone will always remember.' You CAN make a difference this Madiba Day Are you ready for ZO's 12th annual Hang out with Madiba charity drive? The ZO is calling on you to dig deep into your cupboards this Mandela Day on Friday, 18 July. We hope you can make it to one of our drop-off points, either at the newspaper's offices at 3 Baines Road, Empangeni, or in the open space between the Civic Centre and East Central Arterial in Richards Bay. From 7.30am to 12 noon we'll be collecting winter clothing, blankets, toiletries and non-perishable foods. Donations will be distributed via the ZO's charity arm Dice (Do I Care Enough?) to needy organisations and communities. Dice operations manager Karen Dalton said the top needs are non-perishable items including packet soups, 2-minute noodles, porridge, maize meal, samp and beans, tea and sugar, or anything in the grocery cupboards at home, like canned goods.
