A century from Danial Ibrahim and John Simpson's gritty 85 guided Sussex to a draw on the final day of their County Championship clash with Durham. The pair were watchful as they looked to protect their position in the match, with a probing opening spell from Matthew Potts the most trouble the visiting batters faced on a sedate final morning.Sam Conners removed Simpson 15 runs short of another century, but Ibrahim remained calm to reach three figures for the second time in his first-class career.Sussex finished on 322-6 declared with the teams shaking hands at 4.50 pm.The draw means that both sides have consolidated their position in a congested mid-table, with Sussex hosting Warwickshire in the next round that starts on Sunday, while Durham travel to The Oval to face champions Surrey.
Resuming on 111-4 with a lead of 145, Simpson and Ibrahim were tested by Potts and Ben Raine.Sussex continued their plan of taking time out of the game, with the pair rarely letting their rearguard action slip in the first hour.Potts had a couple of lbw shouts against Ibrahim turned down as the Durham quick searched for a breakthrough. The first hour was successfully negated and Ibrahim then brought up his first half-century of the season from 161 deliveries, while skipper Simpson pulled a Conners ball for four to reach his 50 from 106.Things continued in the same vein after lunch, with the Durham bowlers toiling while Sussex were happy to edge further towards the draw.Ibrahim did punish any freebies offered by the bowlers as he pulled a Will Rhodes short ball for four, but he survived an lbw shout from Raine when Durham took the second new ball.He then responded by playing a delightful cover drive off the bowling of Raine, but the Durham man was testing the 20-year-old.Simpson was also having a difficult time against Potts, with the England man sending a couple past the Sussex captain's outside edge, but he responded by playing a crunching cover drive off Raine for four.Potts came so close to a breakthrough, but Ollie Robinson dropped Simpson on 77 as the Sussex skipper gloved one down the legside, but Conners got him soon after when he chipped one up in the air and Lees produced an excellent catch at mid-off.Ibrahim then reached his first century of the season from 264 deliveries with a single on the legside, having recently made a big hundred for the second XI.He guided his side to tea alongside Fynn Hudson-Prentice, who tried to be aggressive after the break but Drissell bowled him for 26 as he missed one completely. That brought Jack Carson to the crease, who was there with Ibrahim when the two sides settled for a draw.

England ready to ‘get stuck in' again after Lord's clashes

After exchanging good-natured wins at Headingley and Edgbaston, the Rothesay Test series grew testy at the home of cricket as India's fielders clashed with Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett in a time-wasting row. That lit a fire under England when it was their turn to field, with Jofra Archer giving a pumped-up send-off to Rishabh Pant while Brydon Carse and Ravindra Jadeja were involved in a mid-pitch collision. India crumbled to 170 all out in pursuit of 193 to fall 2-1 down ahead of this week's penultimate Test at Emirates Old Trafford, but Brook did not think England crossed any line in their pursuit of victory. Brook said: 'I've had a lot of compliments. Everybody (I've spoken to) said it was awesome to watch. It was good fun, I have to admit, it was tiring but it made fielding a lot more enjoyable. 'I think it put them under a little bit more pressure. The opportunity that arose for us to not be the nice guys was because of what they did. We just thought 'we're not standing for that'. 'We had a conversation and said 'it's time to not be those nice guys that we have been before'. You don't always have to be nice. Who knows, that might have played into our favour. It was good fun. 'We were doing it within the spirit of the game. We weren't going out there effing and jeffing at them and being nasty people. We were just going about it in the right manner.' England have been accused of being too carefree in the 'Bazball' era, and Brook revealed it was at his urging after some choice words from head coach Brendon McCullum that they should shed that approach. Asked whether that extra bit of spice will follow the teams up north as England look to guarantee a series win, Brook replied: 'God knows. We'll see whether it happens again and whether it works. 'We were just putting them under more pressure. Baz (McCullum) actually said a few days before that we are too nice sometimes, and I brought it up the night before the last day: 'Baz said the other day we're too nice, I think tomorrow is a perfect opportunity to really get stuck into them'.' Mohammed Siraj was fined 15 per cent of his match fee and given one demerit point for his angry send-off of Duckett during England's second innings, which ended with the pair brushing shoulders. He anticipates more needle between the teams in Manchester, saying: 'Yes (we will see more of it). I'm thinking what we need, what a player needs is sledging.' Brook had a rare fallow week at Lord's with just 34 runs and for the second time in the past eight months, he was knocked off top spot in the Test batting rankings by fellow Yorkshireman Joe Root. 'My main reason I'm in the team is to score runs and I don't want that (ranking) to affect my batting,' Brook added. 'I'm going to go out there, still be the batter I am. 'Everybody wants to be number one (in the world), don't they? Joe is a phenomenal player. I'm not in the same league as him. 'In my opinion, he's the best Test batter of all time. So I'll let him have that one for now.'

ITV gamble pays off with eight million expected to watch England's Euro semi-final

ITV is poised to surge ahead of the BBC in the European Championship ratings battle, with an audience of more than eight million people expected to watch England's semi-final against Italy on Tuesday night. The commercial broadcaster took a gamble by choosing to have first pick of the semi-finals in pre-tournament negotiations with the BBC, which in return got live coverage of three of the four quarter-finals, including England's thrilling penalty shootout win over Sweden. The broadcasters will share live coverage of Sunday's final. ITV's show of faith that Sarina Wiegman's side would reach the last four appears to have paid off, because viewing figures have increased significantly through the tournament. With the drama of England's victory against Sweden having captured the nation's imagination, ITV is hopeful of gaining more viewers than the 7.3 million peak audience that watched the quarter-final on the BBC. In another potential boost for viewing figures all English schools will be closed for the summer holidays from Tuesday afternoon, so even the youngest England fans may be allowed to stay up to watch the Lionesses. ITV would have lost millions in advertising revenue had England been knocked out, which given the commercial constraints under which it operates, may have had implications for its coverage of other sporting events. ITV's peak audience almost doubled from the 2.6 million who watched England's opening match against France to 4.2 million viewers for the team's final group game against Wales the following week. England's Euro 2022 semi-final win over Sweden – also a primetime evening kick-off in midweek – was watched by 9.3 million people and their extra-time victory in the final against Germany reached a peak audience of 17.4 million, the highest-rated TV event of the year and the most-watched women's game ever on UK television. England's World Cup final defeat by Spain 12 months later attracted a smaller audience of 13.2m – 10.7m on BBC One and 2.5m on ITV – with the drop largely attributable to the Sunday morning kick-off. England fans will be able to celebrate into the small hours if England reach the final because the Home Office has extended pub opening hours until 1am to mark an occasion of 'exceptional national significance'. Licensed premises that normally close at 11pm are permitted to serve alcohol for another two hours, although pubs are not obliged to stay open.
