Indore retains top spot in cleanliness survey
In the 'Swachh Shahar' category for cities with more than 10 lakh population, Ahmedabad secured the first position while Bhopal and Lucknow followed it on the next two spots in the annual survey.
The results of the Swachh Survekshan were announced on Thursday.
According to the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, 14 crore people participated in the survey through face-to-face interactions, the Swachhata App, MyGov, and social media platforms in over 4,500 cities.
A total of 78 awards were presented this year across four categories -- Super Swachh League Cities; Top three clean cities in five population categories; Special Category: Ganga Towns, Cantonment Boards, SafaiMitra Suraksha, Mahakumbh; and State Level Awards -- Promising clean city of a state or Union Territory.
Under the new category -- 'Super Swachh League' -- Noida emerged the cleanest city, followed by Chandigarh and Mysore in the three to 10 lakh population category.

The Mayor inaugurated the centre — the first of its kind at the municipal level in Uttarakhand. Officials said the initiative aims to strengthen door-to-door garbage collection and streamline waste management in the state capital. Managed by corporation personnel, the ICCC is also being hailed as a major cost-saving initiative. "This is a major step towards technological empowerment in cleanliness and solid waste management. On average, we were spending ₹15.5 lakh per month on project monitoring companies. That cost has now reduced to around ₹7 lakh with the ICCC, and this includes disaster management and dengue mitigation as well," said municipal commissioner Namami Bansal. In the past, project monitoring companies tracked only their designated areas, while legacy waste sites were managed separately. Officials claim that waste collection has improved from 46% to 80% since the DMC takeover, with the goal of achieving 100% household and public area waste collection.

In a decisive move, junior engineers (JEs) from both the municipal corporation (MC) and UT administration will now double up as sanitation enforcers — monitoring, identifying, and penalising offenders dumping waste in open, non-designated areas. This crackdown follows a stern NGT review meeting on Wednesday, where the UT chief secretary expressed serious concern over the unchecked spread of garbage. The Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) had earlier flagged multiple hotspots of illegal dumping, prompting the administration to rope in engineering staff for frontline enforcement. "JEs will now be the eyes and ears on the ground," said an official. "They will patrol their designated areas and slap penalties on violators as per laid-down norms." The engineering wing of the MC recently allotted a tender for a 750 KLD capacity STP along Faidan and asked the company to complete the work in a period of six months. With the NGT set to review Chandigarh's waste management status in Sept, the administration is racing against time to clean up its act — literally and figuratively.
