DMC command centre integrates door-to-door waste collection, begins ops
1 2 3 Dehradun: Amid unimpressive Swachh Survekshan performance and city-wide complaints about erratic waste management, the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) on Friday launched its Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), based on the Indore model, to closely monitor waste collection and track garbage movement to processing plants. The Mayor inaugurated the centre — the first of its kind at the municipal level in Uttarakhand. Officials said the initiative aims to strengthen door-to-door garbage collection and streamline waste management in the state capital. Managed by corporation personnel, the ICCC is also being hailed as a major cost-saving initiative. "This is a major step towards technological empowerment in cleanliness and solid waste management. On average, we were spending ₹15.5 lakh per month on project monitoring companies. That cost has now reduced to around ₹7 lakh with the ICCC, and this includes disaster management and dengue mitigation as well," said municipal commissioner Namami Bansal. In the past, project monitoring companies tracked only their designated areas, while legacy waste sites were managed separately. The ICCC now brings all systems under one roof, integrating door-to-door collection, transport to processing plants, and eventually, source segregation, making the entire process more transparent, accountable, and efficient. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How to overcome CICS issues without being a mainframe expert - Modernization without disruption CIO | Rocket Software Undo The tech-based model allows real-time monitoring and prevents data manipulation by third parties, ensuring quicker resolution of citizens' complaints. "Our vehicles are supposed to leave by 7 am. By 9 am, we will know which routes weren't covered or where more manpower is needed. Corrective steps can then be taken promptly so that the public is not inconvenienced. Through GPS monitoring, we will also identify underperformers and repeat offenders. Disciplinary action can be taken, while consistent performers can be incentivised," she added. Notably, Dehradun generates over 450 metric tonnes of garbage daily and has not performed well in Swachh Survekshan rankings. Officials hope this new initiative will help reverse that trend and resolve persistent issues in garbage collection. In areas such as Mohkampur, Dharampur, Doon Vihar, and Kishanpur, garbage collection has remained irregular. Strikes by third-party contractors further impacted services, prompting DMC to take over door-to-door waste collection in Feb this year. Since then, the corporation has increased its fleet to over 250 collection vehicles, and Closed User Group (CUG) numbers have been issued to drivers for better coordination with residents. Officials claim that waste collection has improved from 46% to 80% since the DMC takeover, with the goal of achieving 100% household and public area waste collection.

A Gurugram resident filed a complaint on Swachhata App—The internet reacts
In a city where civic issues often take time to be addressed, a recent experience shared by a Gurugram resident has brought attention to the effectiveness of the Swachhata App. The user reported multiple garbage dumping sites in their locality and was surprised to see action being taken within the same day– an outcome that has sparked both appreciation and conversation online. Complaint filed in the morning, cleaning in progress by evening The incident came to light after a local Reddit user shared their experience on the subreddit r/Gurgaon with the title: 'Peak Gurgaon Moment, I Posted on Swachhata App and it worked.' The user said they had reported three garbage dumping spots in S Block, Sector 24, where trash and discarded furniture had been lying untouched for over a week. 'For the last week, the garbage and discarded furniture were lying in the same place with no hope for cleaning,' the user wrote. 'Yesterday, I read about this Swachhata app and, with zero hopes, I posted three complaints this morning.' To their amazement, the results were visible within hours. 'In the evening, I came to the balcony. Two of those spots were already cleaned, and the last big one, where tons of garbage had been thrown, was being cleared by a tractor trolley and workers,' they added. Calling the experience 'literally amazing,' the user said they were genuinely impressed by the quick turnaround. Reddit post: Social media users react with interest and skepticism The post sparked responses from other residents, some praising the app's effectiveness, others pointing out delays in their own cities. 'I'm definitely going to try this out too,' one user wrote, showing interest in using the platform. Another added, 'Didn't work for Delhi. Added a few weeks back, no response. Ticket still open.' Some residents flagged persistent issues. One user commented, 'Anyone tried this for that major dump near Ardee Mall? The one that blocks two lanes?' Others focused on awareness, with one saying, 'This app needs more visibility. How can we get more people to use it?' Gurugram's waste woes under the spotlight While such prompt action is not always the norm, concerns over sanitation in Gurugram have been raised consistently by residents over time. According to a report by India Today, earlier this month, a French national who had been living in the city for several years voiced her concerns on social media, describing the local living conditions as challenging and expressing frustration over ongoing cleanliness issues. What the Swachhata App is designed to do As per sbmurban(dot)org, the Swachhata App, introduced as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission , is a digital tool that enables citizens to report sanitation and solid waste-related issues. Each complaint is geo-tagged and directed to the relevant municipal authorities for action. Times of India has not independently verified the claims made in the post. JEs turn watchdogs to take litterbugs to task in Chandigarh
1 2 Chandigarh: With the National Green Tribunal (NGT) breathing down its neck, the Chandigarh administration has rolled out a no-nonsense plan to tackle illegal garbage dumping across the city. In a decisive move, junior engineers (JEs) from both the municipal corporation (MC) and UT administration will now double up as sanitation enforcers — monitoring, identifying, and penalising offenders dumping waste in open, non-designated areas. This crackdown follows a stern NGT review meeting on Wednesday, where the UT chief secretary expressed serious concern over the unchecked spread of garbage. The Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) had earlier flagged multiple hotspots of illegal dumping, prompting the administration to rope in engineering staff for frontline enforcement. "JEs will now be the eyes and ears on the ground," said an official. "They will patrol their designated areas and slap penalties on violators as per laid-down norms." To empower them, the administration is preparing to issue special challaning powers, turning engineers into eco-sentinels. Currently, sanitation inspectors handle this task, but limited manpower and infrastructure have hampered results. With 80-100 JEs now joining the mission, authorities expect a significant boost in enforcement and deterrence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo The CPCC, which monitors solid and liquid waste management, acts as a watchdog and regularly reports to the NGT. Its latest findings have added urgency to the city's clean-up efforts, especially with Swachh Survekshan ratings taking a hit due to legacy waste issues. STP in Faidan village In another development, the MC is gearing up to set up a second sewage treatment plant (STP) in Faidan village. After awarding the tender for a 750 KLD STP, officials say the area's needs demand a second facility. "The engineering department of the MC has been asked to start the process of this second STP as soon as possible," sources said. The engineering wing of the MC recently allotted a tender for a 750 KLD capacity STP along Faidan and asked the company to complete the work in a period of six months. With the NGT set to review Chandigarh's waste management status in Sept, the administration is racing against time to clean up its act — literally and figuratively.
