Assam: 11 arrested for alleged anti-national social media posts, CM warns of NSA
Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said they are tracing and chasing out the sympathisers of Pakistan and Islamic terrorism and those individuals will be prosecuted under the National Security Act (NSA).
Sarma said that the state police have launched a statewide crackdown on anti-India remarks and till Saturday morning, a total of 11 individuals, including a journalist, lawyer and Assam University student, have been arrested.
Attending an event in Cachar district's Hatichera tea garden on Saturday afternoon, Sarma said, 'Pakistan is a known enemy and their softness towards terrorism is also a known fact. But there are many sympathisers of Pakistan hiding in our society, and we are tracing and chasing them out.'
Sharing the names of the individuals, Sarma on Friday wrote on social media, 'Assam will not tolerate any individual who, directly or indirectly, supports or defends Pakistan in connection with the heinous attack in Pahalgam.'
He further said, 'As part of its intensified crackdown on individuals promoting anti-national sentiments, the Assam Police has made the arrests and further arrests are underway.'
The arrested persons have been identified as Md Jabir Hussain from Hailakandi, Md AK Bahauddin, Md Imran Hussain Borbhuiya, Baktar Hussain Barbhuiya and Md Javed Mazumder from Cachar, Md Mahahar Mia alias Md Mujihirul Islam from Morigaon, Md Aminul Islam from Nagaon, Md Sahil Ali from Sivasagar, Md Jarif Ali (25) from Barpeta and Anil Bania from Biswanath.
Police said that individuals were booked under 152 (sedition) and other sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, mostly for their social media posts related to the recent Pahalgam terror attack.
Sarma said that those who are likely to repeat the offences would be prosecuted under NSA. 'NSA is not for past crimes but for the offences likely to be committed in the future. If we feel that the arrested individuals may repeat the offences, we'll consider prosecuting them under NSA,' he said.
The CM appealed to citizens to inform the police if they see any anti-India act. 'Just inform us, we'll take care of them,' he added.
A senior police official said that the cybersecurity cells across the state are monitoring the social media posts of ordinary people and the superintendent of police in all the districts has been asked to act promptly in such cases.
Sarma said that the central government is planning to give a strong answer to Pakistan about the Pahalgam terror attack. He also said that this attack will not destroy the peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
'Kashmir will return to normalcy again, and we'll go there again. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will set an example by giving Pakistan a strong answer, just wait and watch,' he said.

2023 Dhangri killings: NIA court frames charges against 2 for sheltering terrorists, acting as their guide
The NIA court has framed charges against two persons under various Sections of the IPC and UAPA for not only harboring and providing food to terrorists involved in the killing of seven people in the twin terror attacks at Dhangri near Rajouri town on January 1 and 2, 2023, but also acting as their guide and helping them return to their hideout after the killings. Identified as Nisar Ahmed alias Haji Nisar and Mushtaq Hussain alias Chacha, the accused are lodged in the high security Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu. The court also charged them under provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act for utilising the services of a minor for illegal activities. The NIA told the court that on January 1, 2023, some terrorists entered some houses at Dhangri and opened fire, killing four people and injuring seven others. One more succumbed to injuries. The next morning, two children were killed and some others injured in an IED explosion at the house of one of the victims. The IED was planted by the terrorists before they left after the firing. Initially, an FIR was registered at Rajouri police station, but later the NIA reregistered the case and took up probe following orders from the Centre. During probe, involvement of Pakistan-based terrorist organisation, Lashar-e-Taiba, surfaced, the NIA said. The accused, who appeared before the court through virtual mode, pleaded not guilty. Special Judge NIA Sandeep Gandotra observed that the allegations are very serious and there is sufficient material to show prima facie that they in furtherance of criminal conspiracy not only harboured the terrorists and provided them food and shelter, but they also acted as their guide and helped them return to their hideout after the massacre. The accused were in contact with the terrorists for approximately three months and they did not tell anybody about them despite getting many opportunities, the judge observed, quoting the NIA investigation. The judge on Thursday charged Nisar Ahmed for commission of offences under Sections 120-B and 201 of the IPC, Sections 18, 19, 20, 38 and 39 of the UAPA, besides Section 83 of the Juvenile Justice Act. Mushtaq was charged under Sections 120-B of IPC, Sections 18, 19 and 39 of UAPA and Section 83 of the Juvenile Justice Act.

NIA charge-sheets top Maoist leader for involvement in anti-India conspiracy
Agency: New Delhi, Jul 18 (PTI) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday charge-sheeted a top leader of the banned CPI (Maoist) outfit in an anti-India conspiracy case. In the supplementary charge sheet filed before the NIA special court, Hyderabad, C P Moideen alias Girish has been charged under relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC), an official statement said. According to the NIA investigation, Moideen was actively involved in the Maoist conspiracy to wage a war against the government of India, it said. Evidence gathered during the investigation confirmed his central role in Maoist operations in the Western Ghats Special Zonal Committee (WGSZC) of the CPI (Maoist), said the statement issued by the NIA. Further NIA investigations revealed that he was a Special Zonal Committee Member of the WGSZC and took over as secretary of WGSZC after the arrest of Central Committee member Sanjoy Deepak Rao in September 2023. Moideen oversaw People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) squads in WGSZC, led recruitment drives, propagated Maoist ideology and planned violent actions targeting security forces in the Kerala–Karnataka–Tamil Nadu tri-junction, the anti-terror organisation found during investigation, the NIA said. Moideen was taken into custody by the Kerala Police in August 2024 and arrested by the NIA in January 2025. The charge sheet was filed in a case originally registered by the Telangana Police in September 2023 against the cadres and members of the CPI (Maoist) and its frontal organisations following the arrest of Sanjoy Deepak Rao. Rao was nabbed when he was found carrying arms and ammunition along with Maoist literature. Subsequently, the case was taken over by the NIA, which charge-sheeted Rao and carried forward the investigation as part of its efforts to scuttle CPI (Maoist)'s revival attempts and dismantle its urban and armed networks, the statement said. Pakistan says it held productive trade talks in Washington
Pakistan said it held productive trade talks with the U.S. in Washington on Friday (July 18, 2025) to advance economic cooperation, according to a statement from the South Asian country's finance ministry. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb met U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer, the statement said. "Both sides expressed satisfaction with the progress in enhancing trade and economic ties, a cornerstone of Pakistan-U.S. bilateral relations," the statement added. It said Mr. Aurangzeb emphasized that the U.S. remained Pakistan's largest trading partner. Both sides expressed optimism that ongoing trade talks would yield positive outcomes, benefiting the economies of both countries, the finance ministry said. Pakistan was optimistic that the trade talks would conclude in a week's time after a virtual meeting between Mr. Aurangzeb and Mr. Lutnick late last month. The negotiations, focused on reciprocal tariffs, are part of a broader push to reset economic ties at a time of shifting geopolitical alignments and Pakistan's efforts to avoid steep U.S. duties on exports. Pakistan faces a 29% tariff on exports to the U.S. under President Donald Trump's measures to target countries with large trade surpluses with the U.S. Pakistan's surplus was around $3 billion in 2024. To offset the imbalance and ease tariff pressures, Islamabad has offered to import more U.S. goods, including crude oil, and to open up investment opportunities through concessions for U.S. firms in Pakistan's mining sector. U.S.-Pakistan relations saw a major boost when Trump hosted Pakistan's army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir at the White House last month in an unprecedented meeting.
