Minta day ago
Thousands stood in pouring rain outside a Bronx mosque Thursday to honor Officer Didarul Islam, killed while guarding 345 Park Avenue during Monday's mass shooting.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch promoted the 36-year-old to detective first grade posthumously, calling him a man who 'built the American dream with his own hands'.
Inside Parkchester Jame Masjid, Islam's pregnant wife's statement was read: "To our family, he was our world."
Fire trucks hoisted a giant American flag nearby as officers from 54 precincts stood shoulder-to-shoulder outside . The service drew Mayor Eric Adams, gubernatorial candidates, and grieving members of New York's Bangladeshi community.
Islam immigrated from Bangladesh, working first as a school safety officer before joining NYPD 3.5 years ago. He supported parents in Bangladesh while raising two sons (ages 4 and 8) in the Bronx with his wife, who expects their third child next month.
Deputy Inspector Muhammad Ashraf recalled Islam's "humble, steady" dedication, noting he'd worked a full shift at Sunday's Dominican Day Parade before taking extra security work Monday.
The attack left his father hospitalized with a stroke, while his eldest son carries Islam's police memo book for comfort . White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared President Trump's condolences, honoring Islam's 'ultimate sacrifice'.
Mourners described how Islam "lived when people like him are vilified as outsiders," urging America to 'protect our dignity as he protected yours', according to a PTI report.
After prayers, streets filled with kneeling mourners, including Muslim officers in uniform, as thunderstorms soaked the silent crowds. Mayor Adams praised Islam's unit, the Strategic Response Group, whose disbandment Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani has vowed . Mamdani attended at the family's invitation but didn't speak.
Gunman Shane Tamura, 27, drove from Las Vegas targeting NFL offices over CTE brain injury fears but took a wrong elevator.
His rampage killed Islam, security guard Aland Etienne, Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, and real estate worker Julia Hyman . Governor Kathy Hochul noted Islam "stood out front" as a barrier, likely saving lives.
As six officers carried Islam's flag-draped casket through rain, Commissioner Tisch's voice cracked: "May his memory be eternal." The procession then drove to his final resting place in Totowa, New Jersey – leaving a city to grieve an immigrant who died defending its promise.

Trinamool highlights unnatural death migrant worker in Pune, blames it on targeting of Bengali speakers

Raising its pitch against the targeting of migrant workers from West Bengal in other States, the Trinamool Congress on Friday highlighted the unnatural death of a 28-year-old worker from State's Jalpaiguri district at Pune in Maharashtra. 'This is no longer about detention, harassment, or deportation. This is targeted elimination. Bengalis are being hunted, assaulted, and murdered with impunity in @BJP4India -ruled states. @India_NHRCwon't bat an eye because this state-sponsored violence is orchestrated and enabled by BJP,' the Trinamool Congress posted on social media. The deceased worker was identified as Dipu Das (28), a resident of Binnaguri panchayat area of Rajganj of West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district. The family members of the migrant worker claimed that he was murdered. The West Bengal's ruling party on social media said that a blood-soaked photo of the migrant worker's body was sent to his family members by a contractor from Pune. 'His body bore multiple injury marks, including a deep wound on his neck clearly inflicted by a sharp weapon,' the Trinamool Congress said. Several leaders and spokespersons of the party including Kunal Ghosh took to social media and demanded investigation in the manner. 'In light of a series of such alarming incidents in -ruled states,@BJP4India this cannot be dismissed as an isolated case. We demand a prompt, transparent, and independent investigation into the matter. The culture of targeted hate and impunity must end,' Mr. Ghosh said. Another Trinamool Congress spokesperson Debangshu Bhattacharya warned that the 'BJP will face consequences far graver than they can imagine' if this 'brutal campaign against Bengalis continues'. A few days ago, Abu Bakkar Mandal, a migrant worker of Baduria, North 24 Parganas, was murdered under Bhasi police station area of Maharashtra. The Trinamool Congress government had claimed that the migrant worker was targeted for being a Bengali. However, later the investigations revealed the youth was murder due a strained relationship with a woman in Maharashtra. The family members of the deceased migrant worker from Jalpaiguri, particularly his brother Apu Das said that his brother used to work for a contractor, who told the family that he met with an accident and later was informed that his brother had died. The family members said that they became suspicious after seeing the blood-stained photographs of his brother sent from Pune. The development comes at a time when hundreds of migrant workers from West Bengal have alleged harassment and torture at the hands of police on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals in different States including Maharashtra. The Trinamool Congress has launched a 'language movement' to protest the targeting of migrants.

Who is Lawrence Taylor? Controversial New York Giants footballer features in Donald Trump's Presidential Fitness Test sports council

President Donald Trump has reestablished the Presidential Fitness Test for American children, a fixture of public schools for decades that gauged young people's health and athleticism with 1-mile runs, sit-ups and stretching exercises. 'This is a wonderful tradition, and we're bringing it back,' Trump said of the fitness test that began in 1966 but was phased out during the Obama administration. An executive order he signed on Thursday also reinvigorates a national sports council that the president stocked with former and current athletes and other figures from the sports world. Several prominent athletes joined Trump and top administration officials, including allies such as friend and pro golfer Bryson DeChambeau; and others who've attracted controversy such as former New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor, a registered sex offender. Meet the Real Enemy of Neuropathy (Stop Doing This) FootRenew Learn More Undo Lawrence Julius Taylor, born February 4, 1959, is a Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker who played 13 seasons with the New York Giants, winning Super Bowls in 1987 and 1991. Widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, Taylor revolutionized the linebacker position with his speed, power, and game‑changing presence. In May 2010, Taylor was arrested at a Holiday Inn in Rockland County, New York, on charges of third‑degree statutory rape and patronizing a prostitute involving a 16‑year‑old runaway. Taylor claimed the girl told him she was 19. In January 2011, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor sexual misconduct and patronizing, receiving six years' probation and required to register as a sex offender. A Rockland County judge later designated him as a Level 1 (low‑risk) sex offender, which exempts him from having his photo posted on New York's public registry, though he remains listed with Florida authorities. Live Events Taylor has repeatedly run into legal trouble for failing to update his registered address, a requirement under law. He was arrested in Florida in December 2021, and again in July 2024, on charges of failing to report his residence change, which is a third‑degree felony. Taylor pleaded not guilty in 2024, with his attorney calling the incident a misunderstanding. Both times, legal action was resolved in his favor—by plea deal in 2021, and by prosecutors dropping felony charges in August 2024. In May 2025, Taylor delivered a motivational speech to the New York Giants, sparking controversy and criticism online due to his criminal past, even as some fans noted his effort to serve as a team builder. His legacy remains deeply complicated: a legend on the field, yet a convicted sex offender whose actions continue to provoke debate. FAQs Q1. Why is Lawrence Taylor a registered sex offender? A1. Lawrence Taylor became a registered sex offender in 2011 after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges of sexual misconduct and patronizing a prostitute. The case involved a 16-year-old girl who had been trafficked, though Taylor claimed he believed she was 19. He received six years' probation and was classified as a Level 1 sex offender—considered low risk—but still required to register in states like New York and Florida. Q2. Has Lawrence Taylor had any legal issues since his 2011 conviction? A2. Yes. Taylor has faced multiple arrests related to failing to update his registered address, a legal requirement for sex offenders. He was arrested in Florida in 2021 and again in 2024 for not reporting a change of residence. In both instances, felony charges were either resolved through a plea deal or dropped. These incidents have kept him under scrutiny, especially when he reappears in the public spotlight.

Some worry, others breathe a sigh of relief: How countries are responding to new US tariffs imposed by Trump administration

US President Donald Trump announced a fresh wave of tariffs on exports from dozens of trading partners. Trump's latest tariff move sent global stock markets tumbling and prompted countries and companies to scramble to find ways to strike better deals with Washington. The new tariffs announced by the Trump administration included Switzerland's 39 percent tariff, which saw the highest tariff rates since the early 1930s. It sought more talks, as did India, hit with a 25% rate. New tariffs also include a 35% duty on many goods from Canada, 50% for Brazil, and 20% for Taiwan, which said its rate was "temporary" and expected to reach a lower figure. These tariffs are set to take effect next week and impact almost every country. While most nations are facing increased tariffs, a few are breathing a sigh of relief after securing last-minute deals. Trump's new tariff rates: Here's how some countries reacted Live Events New Zealand's Trade Minister Tom McClay called the increased tariffs unjustified after the country's exports to the US were hit with a 15% base rate, up from 10%, according to CNN. In Switzerland, the government expressed "great regret" over the US decision to impose 39% tariffs on Swiss imports, despite progress in bilateral talks and Switzerland's "very constructive stance." Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell praised the 10% tariff rate—the lowest announced by the White House—calling it a 'vindication' of how the government handled diplomacy with the US. Bangladesh called the outcome of its trade talks with the US a 'decisive diplomatic victory' after Trump announced a 20% tariff on Bangladeshi goods. The rate announced in April 2025 was 37 percent. Malaysia, which was at risk of a 24% tariff on its exports, was able to negotiate it down to 19%—a result its trade ministry described as a 'significant achievement.' Cambodia, after reaching a deal with the US, will now face a 19% tariff instead of the originally announced 49%. South Africa, facing the highest tariff rate at 30%, said discussions with the US will continue. President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that negotiations are the best path forward. Wall Street sell-off sparked by tariff onslaught Wall Street's main indexes led a global selloff on Friday as new U.S. tariffs on dozens of trading partners weighed on sentiment, while a weaker-than-expected payrolls report added to risk aversion. Markets were also reacting to a disappointing jobs report. Global shares stumbled, with Europe's STOXX 600 down 1.89% on the day and 2.5% on the week, on track for its biggest weekly drop since Trump announced his first major wave of tariffs on April 2. Trump's new tariffs have created yet more uncertainty, with many details unclear. They are set to take effect on Aug 7 at 0401 GMT, a White House official said. The European Union, which struck a framework deal with Trump, is still awaiting further Trump orders to deliver on agreed-upon carve-outs, including those for cars and aircraft, EU officials said, noting that the latest executive orders did not cover these areas.
