Al Murray shares why Scotland gave him 'best week of his life' as he attends Pride of Scotland Awards
Comedian Al Murray has revealed his love for Scotland tonight, June 23, on the red carpet of the Daily Record's Pride of Scotland Awards. The comic also shared that the 'best week of his life' took place in Edinburgh when his first daughter was born during the Fringe festival in 1999.
The Daily Record's annual Pride of Scotland ceremony takes place tonight, and will shed light on some of our nation's unsung community heroes. The star-studded event is being hosted by Elaine C Smith and Sanjeev Kohli, and includes an exclusive list of award-winners including Sir Chris Hoy.
Al Murray is just one of the celebrity names on this year's guest list, and he confessed that his appearance at tonight's ceremony was down to his love for the city of Glasgow. The star is no stranger to Scotland, and he is also a frequenter of the Edinburgh Fringe.
He told the Daily Record: "This is really brilliant, I got the call a couple of weeks ago, and you know, any excuse to come to Glasgow obviously.
"I love coming here, I've come here a lot, and I like playing here, I like the city."
But the famed comedian's love for the Scots goes deeper than his fondness for playing gigs.
The star also shared that the 'best week of his life' took place at the Edinburgh Fringe back in 1999, when his eldest daughter was born and he won a prestigious comedy award at the festival.
Murray explained: "The most amazing thing that's happened to me in Scotland was my eldest daughter was born here.
"She was born at the Edinburgh Festival."
Having been born on Scottish soil, the comic then joked that his daughter 'did wonder where her free university education was going to come from'.
However, as she had never lived here, Murray's daughter unfortunately missed out on that particular perk of being a Scot.
The comedian added: "She's not got the accent but she was born [in Edinburgh] on a Monday in August in '99, it was the same week I won the Perrier Award, which is the Comedy Award now, that same week.
"And so there's this weird thing where, it was the most amazing week of my life in terms of what was happening at the Fringe, but then you have a kid and realise, 'oh, we've got to put this all into perspective', and also, 'I've got to work now and not just have fun'.
"But also, she's 25 now, nearly 26, and it just reminds me of how old I am, and how long ago that all happened."
Al Murray also shared that he'll be going on tour in 2026, and will be performing in Scotland in the early days of the new year.

Two Jewish comedians have Fringe shows cancelled due to staff 'safety concerns'
Jewish comedians Rachel Creeger and Philip Simon have spoken out after having their shows axed unexpectedly. Both were due to perform at the Whistlebinkies bar as part of this year's Edinburgh Fringe, which runs from August 1 to 25. Creeger's show was titled Ultimate Jewish Mother and would mark her third time doing stand-up at Whistlebinkies. Simon, who co-hosts the podcast Jew Talkin' To Me? alongside Creeger, was due to take his variety show, Jew-O-Rama, which displays Jewish comedic talents, to the same venue. However, just weeks before taking to the stage, they were informed that the shows would not be going ahead, claiming they were told that venue staff expressed safety fears. The comedians were allegedly notified of the cancellation on July 18. At this point, despite their intention of booking another venue, it was already too late to make secondary plans. Consequently, their names no longer appear on the official Fringe site. According to The Telegraph, the concerns were allegedly raised after an announcement said police supervision would be increased for the venue, amid existing concerns about the safety of Jewish acts. Creeger told the publication: 'Sadly, this is part of an ongoing problem faced by Jewish performers in this country. 'We are being cancelled and often silently boycotted.' Meanwhile, Simon voiced his own qualms about the immediate 'solution' to the alleged safety concerns being to 'remove the Jews from the bill'. 'This is emblematic of the problem facing Jewish artists and performers in the UK today,' he stated. In a statement to Chortle, Free Fringe CEO Luke Meredith said: 'The decision not to host the two shows was taken by the venue alone. So far as we understand, this was a staff decision based on last year's experience when they experienced a significant rise in both 'Free Palestine' and Zionist graffiti, together with police notices that they said made them feel unsafe. 'The matter was first brought to our attention in late May, after the print deadline for the brochure had passed. I thought at the time that, having explained the police were only taking precautions and no actual threats had been made, and that moving them after they were already advertised in print might be detrimental, that the matter had been resolved. Apparently, however, it had been understood that we were to move the shows.' Meredith continued on Friday: 'I was made aware of this a week ago, and since then we have been working with the shows to try and find them a suitable replacement slot, including approaching other organisations. 'Nothing has been possible so far, but we welcome any offer of help. If anyone has a space in central Edinburgh that would like to host them, we would be happy to run it.' Speaking further to the Jewish Chronicle, Simon declared that 'this would not happen to any other ethnic minority'. 'We are bipartisan. My show is a Jewish compilation show where we have a rolling lineup of Jewish and non-Jewish comedians.' On what his show entails, further adding to the shock and confusion he felt when the show was scrapped, Simon added: 'We had no politics, as far as I'm aware, put out onto the stage.' He explained how the show has been running for about nine years and has already been hosted in Whistlebinkies five times, insisting his material is 'not about Israel whatsoever', but suggesting others now feel 'braver' in what they can complain about. 'My show is really about the idea that all mums are the same,' said Creeger. 'It ends with wishing for peace for everyone. It's like a lovely, warm hug of a show.' The pair are now experiencing financial hardship, having paid thousands to fund their Fringe shows. This included travel, accommodation, and marketing costs. 'It's about £2,500,' Creeger revealed of what she has already spent. 'Which I have to save up for the entire year to afford.' More Trending Pointing out what he believes are double standards, Simon argued that there would be 'outrage' if this happened to other comedians who were not Jewish, saying the venue would be 'boycotted, shut down, [and] never allowed to trade'. 'That's not what we're asking for in the least … but there's no logic as to why this has happened this year specifically.' Simon has two other shows, Shall I Compere Thee in a Funny Way? and School's Out Comedy Club, which are still scheduled to go ahead at this year's Fringe. The glamorous event on Thursday, July 24, marked the official opening of the luxury wellness facility, following six months of extensive refurbishment at the Langbank hotel. Guests included Mrs Brown's Boys actor Gary Hollywood and Glasgow's Lord Provost Jacqueline McLaren, who joined Dr Punam in cutting the ribbon. The TV doctor, who recently appeared on Strictly's Christmas special, praised the spa's tranquil setting but admitted one feature wouldn't tempt her. 'The spa is absolutely beautiful, the views are stunning and I am feeling very tranquil. It's Scotland at its best,' said Punam, 42. 'The ice plunge pool is the only thing that I will not be trying. "You couldn't pay me to jump into that. Gorka would love it. He does ice water baths every day, but I cannot do it. I respect anybody who can do ice water immersions but it's definitely not for me.' The new Imperia Spa now boasts one of the largest outdoor saunas in the UK, offering panoramic views over the Clyde and the surrounding countryside, including Ben Lomond. Visitors can also enjoy a wide range of thermal facilities, including a salt steam room, aroma steam room, pink Himalayan salt sauna, hydrotherapy pool, cold plunge pool, and an ice fountain. The spa's design draws inspiration from the estate's past and the glamour of the golden age of travel, with luxurious finishes including black marble, antique gold touches, crystal detailing, and plush quilted textures. Hotel manager James Anderson said the new space had been carefully crafted to combine indulgence, heritage and modern wellness. 'Every detail of Imperia has been designed to surprise and delight, creating an escape unlike anything else in Scotland,' he said. 'We've been coming here to relax and unwind as a family for five years. It's on our doorstep but you quite literally enter another world. My son Ollie, who's now five, thinks it's his second home. His shoes are kicked off the second he arrives.' The spa also features a wellbeing studio, a modern fitness suite, and seven treatment rooms offering therapies using luxury products from leading brands including Natura Bissé, Elemis, Temple Spa and Tri-Dosha. The new spa officially opened its doors on June 16.

Angry mum leaves Butlin's after 'beds wet' and daughter had 'poo on hands'
Mum Jasmine took to TikTok to share her disappointment with the accommodation at the Skegness holiday park. Butlin's has apologised after a family checked in to a "grimy" and "damp" room which was "in need of a massive deep clean". Mum Jasmine took to TikTok to share her disappointment with the accommodation at the Skegness holiday park. Sharing clips of the filthy room with her 19,000 followers, she said: "I could make a 10-minute video on all of the issues in here but here's some of them." Jasmine, who went on to give a tour of the room, added: "Even walking up to the room I felt grimy. This is the Butlin's comfort room. This is my sign to not blindly book something hahaha." As reported by the Mirro r, she said they couldn't stand to sleep in the room for more than one night as she showed dirt throughout, including in the shower and the bin. In her voiceover, Jasmine said: "I was meant to book the apartment but I didn't realise. When I first walked in there and I saw there's only two rooms and one bathroom in the middle, I thought, 'Where's the rest of it?'. "I am going to emphasise that was not Butlin's fault at all though to be fair - it was my fault. So anyway I don't know if the videos can do it justice because the smell when I walked in there was just absolutely wild. "This isn't the cleaner's fault or anything like that - it's the turnover rate is the issue. These rooms need massive deep cleans because a quick once over is not going to help." "I didn't even want to shower in there - in fact, I didn't shower in there. I ended up going to the swimming pools to have a shower. "We spent one night in this room and the beds were so damp - my daughter even woke up asking why the bed was so wet. "I can't explain the smell. I know I keep saying it but it was horrific. The mould was over the windows, there were cobwebs up the walls... This was a dead bug on our bed and then our daughter got poo on her hand walking out and I was like 'nah, that's it, 100% I am going.' "The stuff kids can do here is amazing though - I will not fault Butlins for that. It is just a shame about the room." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! A spokesperson for the holiday park said: 'We're sorry and disappointed to see the cleanliness issues the guest experienced with their accommodation. This certainly isn't the high standards we expect our guests to receive when they holiday with us. We carried out a full reclean and offered a gesture of goodwill which was accepted.' Others shared similar experiences in the comments, with one person writing: "This looks so much cleaner than our room [laughing emoji]." Another person said: "Skegness I had the most horrible room haven't ever gone back. It was a hot year window broke couldn't open it, bedding didn't get changed stuff left under the bed etc was horrible." However, another visitor insisted they had only ever had positive experiences at the holiday park, writing: "Which Butlin's is this?? We've always been to skeg one and never had a room like this. That's grim."
