ISKANDAR PUTERI: The proposed final alignment for the Elevated Automated Rapid Transit (E-ART) system is expected to be known in several months' time, says a Johor executive councillor.
State works, transportation, infrastructure and communication committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh ( pic ) said the E-ART would cover three main corridors – Skudai, Tebrau and Iskandar Puteri.
'These three corridors will be integrated at the main interchange station in Bukit Chagar to subsequently support the Rapid Transit Link (RTS),' he said in reply to Datuk Ramlee Bohani (BN-Kempas) who asked about the government's measures in addressing worsening traffic congestion in Johor Baru at the state Legislative Assembly here yesterday.
He added that the E-ART initiative was subject to the outcome of the Request for Proposal (RFP) assessment.
'The Public Private Partnership Unit has initiated the RFP process for the implementation of the E-ART system, aimed at completing the integrated transport system in Greater Johor Baru.
'The proposed final alignment is expected to be known as early as August of this year, subject to the outcome of the RFP evaluation,' Mohamad Fazli said.
He added that the implementation of the E-ART is expected to provide significant benefits in reducing traffic congestion, enhancing daily mobility and supporting the state's low-carbon agenda.
He also said the state government has drawn up a traffic dispersal plan by setting up the Greater JB Traffic Dispersal Special Committee, a state-level special committee formed to identify congestion hotspots and draft traffic dispersal plans.
'So far, 77 congestion areas have been identified, and action has been taken at more than 20 locations.
'The committee has also proposed measures such as installing lane barriers, traffic info boards and enforcement during peak hours, which have been presented in the Cabinet Committee Meeting on Congestion and Safety.
'One of the hotspots where a dispersal plan has been implemented is the closure of Jalan Ledang heading to the Skudai Highway (exit from Taman Johor to Skudai), which has successfully reduced traffic congestion in the area,' he said.
Mohamad Fazli added the government was reviewing the need to increase road capacity, including road widening, the construction of new bypasses and regular maintenance.
He said this was to ensure that the traffic system can accommodate the growing number of vehicles and rapid development in the Johor Baru area.
Meanwhile, state housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the government has committed to building 100,000 units of affordable houses by 2030, with 16,845 units already completed as of the first quarter of this year.
'The state government remains committed to achieving our target of 30,000 units by 2026, and the momentum will continue to reach 100,000 units by the end of this decade,' he said in reply to Muszaide Makmor (BN-Sedili), Mohd Yusla Ismail (BN-Senggarang) and Ng Kor Sim (PH-Jementah).
He added that the plan includes efforts to expand projects under the Rumah Kasih Johor and Rumah Prihatin Johor programmes, which aim to support low-income groups.

Govt must remain grounded, public sentiment matters, says Rafizi

KUALA LUMPUR: The government must remain grounded and responsive to public sentiment as positive economic indicators alone may not guarantee continued public support, said former economy minister Rafizi Ramli. Likening the midterm elections in the United States to Malaysia, Rafizi, in his recent Yang Bakar Menteri podcast, said the situation should serve as early warning signs for ruling parties in the country. "In the US, for instance, the midterm elections serve as the first warning bell; whether a party or president remains in power or is replaced depends on how the remainder of the term is handled. "The concern now if the opposition takes over (in the next general election), it would be a waste, especially at a time when many of the measures introduced are finally starting to show results. "One of Pakatan Harapan's (PH) advantages has always been that the people generally believe PH is a more competent administration. However, the PH-BN led government must not take public sentiment lightly," he said. The Pandan member of parliament also pointed out that despite Malaysia's strong economic performance in 2017, the public ultimately voted for change in the following year. "Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was confident of winning. Analysts even predicted it (BN's win). "But, they lost as there was a gap between the headline numbers and how the sentiment of the people," he said. As such, he also said it was important to have humility and internal accountability within parties. "Even if we support our own party, we cannot take a 'holier than thou' approach as if our party is always right, it does not work like that. "We have to lead by example, and if there is something we believe is wrong, we must speak up. "With about two years left in the term, how the government handles public sentiment is crucial. "Protest votes have happened before, in 2018, and this is why many are now saying they miss Najib's era, as the figures at the time looked good. Economically, 2017 was a strong year."

Malaysia's manufacturing sales rise 2.4pc to RM158.7b in May, says DoSM

KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 — Malaysia's manufacturing sector sales value rose 2.4 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM158.7 billion in May compared with a 4.7 per cent y-o-y growth in April, said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the May 2025 sales value growth was mainly contributed by the food, beverages and tobacco sub-sector, sustaining the strong expansion with a 13.0 per cent increase, against April's 10.8 per cent expansion. 'This growth was also supported by the electrical and electronics (E&E) products and the non-metallic mineral products, basic metal and fabricated metal products sub-sectors, which rose by 5.0 per cent (April 2025: 9.6 per cent) and 3.7 per cent (April 2025: 4.6 per cent), respectively. 'However, the sales value dropped by 1.1 per cent to RM158.7 billion against RM160.4 billion recorded in the prior month,' he said in a statement following the department's Monthly Manufacturing Statistics for May 2025, released today. He said the sales value in the export-oriented industries, which accounted for 71.1 per cent of total sales, grew by 2.7 per cent in May 2025 (April: 5.1 per cent). The performance was primarily due to the increase in the manufacture of vegetable, animal oils and fats by 15.9 per cent (April 2025: 12.2 per cent). Meanwhile, the manufacture of computers, electronics and optical products expanded by 4.9 per cent (April 2025: 10.2 per cent), and the manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (equipment not elsewhere classified) advanced by 7.7 per cent (April: 9.5 per cent). On a month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, export-oriented industries rebounded to 0.1 per cent (April: -3.3 per cent). Likewise, the domestic-oriented industries expanded by 1.9 per cent in May 2025, following a 3.6 per cent rise in April. The performance was supported by robust growth in the manufacture of food processing products at 10.5 per cent in May 2025 (April: 10.0 per cent), as well as in the manufacture of basic metals (4.3 per cent) and manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (3.5 per cent). On a month-on-month comparison, domestic-oriented industries declined 3.9 per cent. On the number of employees, Mohd Uzir said a total of 2.40 million employees were recorded in this sector in May 2025, on a 0.9 per cent augmentation (April: 1.2 per cent). The augmentation was mainly driven by the food, beverages & tobacco (1.8 per cent); non-metallic mineral products, basic metal and fabricated metal products (1.4 per cent); and E&E products (1.1 per cent). On a month-on-month basis, the number of employees in this sector marginally decreased by 0.1 per cent. 'Salaries and wages paid in the manufacturing sector also posted an increase of 1.6 per cent (April: 2.4 per cent), amounting to RM8.3 billion in May 2025. Furthermore, the salaries and wages paid improved by 0.2 per cent compared with RM8.3 billion recorded in the preceding month,' he said. Subsequently, Mohd Uzir said the sales value per employee registered at RM66,163 (1.6 per cent), while the average salaries and wages per employee were RM3,470, a rise of 0.7 per cent y-o-y. In the first five months this year, he said manufacturing sector sales value amounted to RM794.7 billion, an increase of 3.8 per cent compared to the same period of 2024 (3.3 per cent). The number of employees increased by 0.9 per cent to 2.40 million persons, while salaries and wages increased by 1.9 per cent to RM41.9 billion. — Bernama

Advancing identity for digital governance

Malaysian-owned Zchwantech showcases National Digital Identity platform to the Government of Timor-Leste. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian-owned technology firm Zchwantech Titan Lda has successfully held a high-level technology showcase for the Government of Timor-Leste, featuring its flagship National Digital Identity platform. The presentation aligns with Timor-Leste's broader vision to modernise public services and advance digital governance. The strategic engagement took place during an official working visit to Malaysia by senior representatives of the Timor-Leste Government. During the visit, Zchwantech demonstrated its secure, biometric-powered digital identity solution, designed to seamlessly integrate key public and private sectors, covering banking, healthcare, telecommunications, education and civil registries. Trusted solution Zchwantech's presentation was well received, with government officials expressing strong interest and confidence in the platform's potential to support Timor-Leste's E-Governance Roadmap and Vision 2025 for a more inclusive and connected society. The system is built to deliver unique digital identifiers linked to biometric and demographic data, enabling secure and seamless access to services for over one million citizens. Zchwantech chairman Datuk Seow Gim Shen said, 'We are honoured to be given the opportunity to present our vision and capabilities directly to the Government of Timor- Leste. 'This is more than just a digital ID — it's about empowering people, creating transparent institutions and laying the foundation for inclusive digital growth. We commend the government's leadership in prioritising national digital transformation and are ready to support Timor-Leste every step of the way.' Seow added: 'We believe in building technology that scales with purpose. By focusing on inclusive design and national priorities, we aim to enable long-term value creation for governments and citizens alike.' Zchwantech executive director Alex Chan Chau Loong emphasised the delivery commitment: 'This project is where vision meets execution — we're turning Timor-Leste's Digital Revolution goals into reality. 'Our Digital ID platform is built to be both agile and rigorously secure – ensuring fast deployment while safeguarding citizen trust. Critically, it is future-ready for connectivity to Asean systems, so Timor-Leste grows hand-in-hand with the region.' Strategic rollout As part of the proposed phased deployment model, Zchwantech unveiled Oecusse —Timor-Leste's Special Administrative Region — as the ideal pilot location for launching the Digital ID platform. The initiative positions Oecusse as a controlled, scalable testbed to demonstrate tangible benefits before a full nationwide rollout. The pilot initiative supports Timor-Leste's strategy of building trust in new technologies through live demonstrations, active stakeholder engagement and a phased rollout across government ministries and institutions. Regional leadership If implemented, Timor-Leste could become one of the first Asean nations to roll out a nationwide digital identity framework powered by biometrics and secure data infrastructure —positioning the country as a regional leader in digital public service innovation. The proposed platform aligns with Timor-Leste's aspirations for Asean accession, while advancing national objectives such as financial inclusion, transparent governance and cross-border digital interoperability. Supported by a potential investment of up to US$13.8mil (RM58.2mil), the platform is fully prepared for implementation, pending government approval and compliance with national procurement protocols.
