$565m credit line for Maldives, talks on free trade pact
PM Modi and President of the Maldives Mohamed Muizzu (Pic credit: AP) The turnaround in India-Maldives ties in the past 10 months - following the acrimonious removal of Indian military personnel from the strategically located country - seemed complete as India announced a fresh $565 million line of credit (LoC) for the Indian Ocean neighbour and signed an agreement to reduce its annual debt repayment burden by 40%. As President Mohamed Muizzu hosted PM Modi for the latter's first visit to the country under his presidency, receiving Modi at the airport, both sides affirmed their commitment to a bilateral investment pact and a free trade agreement, for which the terms of reference were finalised. Seven MoUs and agreements were signed. Muizzu had invited Modi as the guest of honour for the Maldivian independence day celebrations. India had extended an $800 million LoC in 2019 under the previous pro-India Maldivian Democratic Party govt but on this occasion the LoC is in Indian currency (Rs 4,850 crore). PM: India & Maldives will soon finalise an investment treaty The president said after his meeting with Narendra Modi it will be used for priority projects in defence, healthcare, education and housing. Foreign secretary Vikram Misri said Muizzu reiterated the Maldives's condemnation of the Pahalgam attack. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo Muizzu has been seen as a pro-China leader in the past because of his association with the India Out campaign while in the opposition, and his insistence on driving out Indian military from the archipelago after taking over as president in Nov 2023. Muizzu travelled to India in Oct last year for an official visit, during which he said Maldives would do nothing to hurt India's security interests and would prioritise the relationship. The leaders then launched a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership to resuscitate the relationship. Modi said India is proud of the fact that it's Maldives's most reliable partner and that for India, it's always friendship first. "To give a new impetus to our development partnership, we have decided to provide a line of credit of $565 million, or approximately Rs 5,000 crore, to Maldives. It will be used for projects related to infrastructure development in line with the priorities of the people of Maldives," said Modi, calling the relationship older than history and as deep as oceans. One of the agreements signed is expected to bring down Male's annual LoC debt repayment from $51 million to $29 million. Modi said that both countries will soon finalise a bilateral investment treaty and their target now is "from paperwork to prosperity", adding a local currency settlement system under discussion will facilitate trade. There was focus on defence and security cooperation as the new defence ministry building built with Indian assistance was inaugurated. Asked whether there was any discussion about China, Misri said in a press briefing that India continued to work very closely with the Maldives on any issue that might "impinge on not just our security but our common security in this region that we share". Modi will participate in the independence day celebrations on Saturday and meet political functionaries. The visit saw the leaders virtually inaugurating a roads and drainage system project in Addu city and six high impact community development projects in other cities.

Orphaned By Maoists, They Vow To Dismantle Red Infra
Nagpur: In 2012, Maoists killed Suresh Alam, a former gram panchayat member in Nandigaon, Gadchiroli, suspecting him of being a police informer. His daughter, Naame Nagamani Alam, has now been directly appointed as a police constable. In 2005, a village warden Lalsu Pungati was lynched in a guerrilla kangaroo court in Nargunda, Gadchiroli. His son, Sainath Pungati, was directly appointed as a police constable. Both received their job letters from chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on July 22. The ceremony marked a significant step in rehabilitation of families affected by Maoist atrocities. So far, 56 victims have been recruited into the police force in three years. Once helpless and cringing under fear after Maoists dragged their fathers out of their homes and slaughtered them in public, these orphans of insurgency have transformed their grief into resolve. Years passed, and the fear diminished as law enforcement turned the tables on the guerrillas. "We witnessed our father's killing. His lifeless body and my inconsolable mother are still fresh in our memory. We will serve the police with sincerity and combat Maoists," said an appointee. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Is What First-Class Living Really Looks Like Explore Undo The Maharashtra govt has now stepped in and is offering an opportunity to those who bore the brunt of Maoist kangaroo courts. Their children are now joining the commando force, determined to dismantle the regime that abruptly snatched their fathers' protective care. "The recruitments are based on special relaxations for Scheduled Tribe categories, requiring only physical attributes and a minimum qualification of Class 7, with no written examinations," SP Gadchiroli, Neelotpal, said. These appointments are part of a 2018 govt decision to rehabilitate Maoist-hit families by offering direct appointments to Group C and D posts in various departments. Fadnavis, who also virtually inaugurated new administrative buildings for police posts at Dechalipetha and Jimlagatta hamlets, stated the govt is keen to rehabilitate families who suffered in the hands of Maoists. The appointment of Naame Nagamani and Sainath by the CM himself symbolizes a powerful shift, stated IG State Anti-naxal operation cell, Sandip Patil. Once victims of Maoist terror, they are now empowered to protect their communities, vowing to end the menace that shattered their families.

Mandals can register till July 31 for Khasdar Sanskritik Ganesh Utsav
1 2 Nagpur: What started as a small cultural experiment in 2021 has now turned into one of Nagpur's most successful community-driven initiatives that blends devotional celebration with rich cultural expression. The Khasdar Sanskritik Mahotsav Samiti has appealed to Ganesh mandals across Nagpur to register for the Sanskritik Ganesh Utsav. In its fourth year, the Sanskritik Ganesh Utsav has grown exponentially — from just 55 mandals and 350 artists in 2021 to over 300 mandals and 2,000 artists participating in 2024. Ganesh mandals have been asked to register by July 31, while cultural groups and artists will register by August 5. Registration can be done by visiting Nitin Gadkari's Public Relations Office, at Savarkar Nagar, opposite Orange City Hospital, Khamla Chowk between 12 noon and 3pm. "Earlier, many Ganeshotsav celebrations were mere pomp and show. This platform brings back art, literature, and thought-provoking performances into pandals, benefiting local and folk artists who suffered due to Covid," said Jayprakash Gupta, secretary of Khasdar Sanskritik Mahotsav Samiti. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Remember Him?
