U.P. Legislature's joint panel begins probe at KGMU
: The Joint Committee of the Uttar Pradesh Legislature on Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and De-notified Tribes has initiated an investigation into the alleged violation of reservation policies in the teachers' recruitment process at King George's Medical University (KGMU). The committee sought documents from the KGMU administration related to the recruitment of 112 teachers, a person familiar with the issue said, adding that vice chancellor Prof Sonia Nityanand and other officials presented their side before the committee and provided the necessary papers.
The committee is headed by MLC Lalji Nirmal and comprises MLAs Suresh Pasi, Manoj Paras and Dr Ragini Sonkar.
The committee examined documents related to recruitments, the person privy to the issue said, adding that the panel held a meeting on Wednesday over allegations of general category candidates being appointed to reserved posts at KGMU.
'The meeting continued for over an hour over the allegations during which they examined the documents. The committee will submit its report to the state government, which will take further action based on the findings,' confirmed Dr KK Singh, media in-charge of KGMU.
KGMU had issued an advertisement for 112 teaching positions on July 12, 2022. The advertisement specified reservations for different categories, reportedly 20% for EWS (economically weaker sections), 63% for the unreserved, 10% for OBCs, 7% for SCs and 0% for STs. The results were declared on September 18, 2024, and teachers were appointed overnight.
According to the allegations, the recruitment process allegedly violated the roster system with 15 EWS positions being converted to unreserved ones, resulting in 76% positions being declared unreserved and no adjustments were made to positions for SC and OBC categories.
Only two positions were allocated for ST, whereas approximately 14 positions should have been allocated based on the total number of positions, according to the allegations.

Akhilesh attends blood donation camp on b'day-eve
Lucknow: Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday visited the King George's Medical University (KGMU) here on the eve of his birthday and attended a blood donation camp organised by party workers belonging to the PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) members. Yadav was born on July 1, 1973 in Saifai, Etawah and is presently an SP MP from Kannauj. Extending his gratitude to the PDA workers, Yadav said, 'I thank and express my appreciation to all our dedicated PDA family workers participating in today's blood donation camp.' Highlighting the aim of the PDA initiative, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said it is a movement to unite all sections of society that are 'suffering, oppressed, troubled and insulted'. In a scathing attack on the BJP-led government on the economy front, Yadav alleged that there is an 'undeclared emergency' in trade and industry. 'They (BJP) are selling things (institutions and establishments) at throwaway rates to their men. According to news reports, a major institution is also on the verge of being sold. If trade and industry grow, the lives of common people will change and employment will rise,' he said. Referring to KGMU, he said it is not only a premier institute of the country but also one of global repute. 'When the Samajwadi government comes to power, we will provide every necessary resource to make it the world's best institution and will ensure the poor get proper medical facilities,' he said. On river pollution, Yadav said, 'Rivers are not cleaned but they are siphoning off the budget. That's why the Gomti is dirty today. It was becoming beautiful in the SP regime but they have ruined it.' He also announced plans to instal a statue of Veerangana Uda Devi at the Gomti riverfront in Lucknow as amark of respect to the freedom fighter.

It's shocking because the building is considered secure and has guards. We have collected CCTV footage and handed it over to the police. The tree was about 50 years old and worth lakhs. We've also informed the Forest Department, as sandalwood trees are protected under the Forest Act. We were told that this type of wood cannot be sold legally, and its value is set by the government." Meanwhile, in a separate incident, one person who was accused of a robbery case worth ₹ 1.5 crore was injured in an encounter with the police in Ghaziabad's Kavi Nagar, as per the information by Ghaziabad ACP Bhaskar Verma.
