Two of the UFC's top analysts have thoughts on Khabib Nurmagomedov's retirement as the five-year anniversary approaches later this year.
Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen, who coached the current Season 33 of "The Ultimate Fighter" opposite each other, had different views on Nurmagomedov retiring as an undefeated UFC lightweight champion.
Nurmagomedov (29-0 MMA, 13-0 UFC) hung up his gloves after notching his third lightweight title defense against Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in October 2020. He made a promise to his mother that he would no longer compete after his father and coach, Abdulmanap, passed away.
"Way too soon," Cormier told Bleacher Report on the timing of Nurmagomedov's retirement. "I thought Khabib could have been fighting today, and there's a chance, because I mean, Islam (Makhachev) is a bit of an extension of who he was. But to know them is to know that when his dad passed, it took a lot away from him. And so when he decided I'm going to do something different, mom's like, 'Hey, you and your father started this journey together, I don't want you to do it without him.' If he made that promise, I knew it was over.''
Sonnen, meanwhile, thinks Nurmagomedov could have been lured by the UFC into fighting again, despite UFC CEO Dana White trying hard to make it happen and failing to bring "The Eagle" back.
"I will tell you this: When the UFC started to negotiate with Khabib, they started adding zeros and commas and bigger checks, and bigger checks, and Conor (McGregor) Part 2," Sonnen said. "The UFC missed it. That wasn't the number they needed to change. The number they needed to change was a 155-pound weight class to 170 pound weight class. You would have got Khabib vs. Conor 2. It wasn't that he didn't want to fight, and he didn't want to fight Conor. I don't believe that. He didn't want to beat the scale anymore, and that's the one thing that the company did miss.''

(Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) Dricus du Plessis (23-2) joined the UFC in October 2020 as a 26-year-old with a 14-2 record. Before he joined the UFC, Du Plessis had won titles with KSW and EFC. He made his debut against Markus Perez on the main card of a UFC Fight Night event in Abu Dhabi. Du Plessis knocked out Perez in the first round. He followed that win with a July 2021 'Performance of the Night' KO win of Trevin Giles. Those two wins earned him a shot against the ranked veteran Brad Tavares. Du Plessis won that scrap via decision. The victory put him in the top 15 of the division. A December 2022 submission win over Darren Till moved Du Plessis to No. 10 in the division. A TKO win over the No. 5 ranked Derek Brunson followed. I wrote of the champ after that fight, "Dricus du Plessis looked much more controlled and less reckless at UFC 312 than in many of his previous battles. He mixed up his striking techniques and targets against Sean Strickland, landed the more powerful blows, and didn't put himself in too many awkward positions. "Du Plessis did a much better job in his UFC 312 rematch against Strickland in shutting down his foe's offense. In the first fight, Strickland landed 173 of 408 significant strikes. While in the rematch, Strickland was held to 128 landed strikes on 263 attempts. Meanwhile, Du Plessis increased his landed strikes and landing percentage from the first fight to the second. The 30-year-old made his UFC debut in July 2020 with a second-round submission win over John Phillips. He followed that victory with a first-round TKO over Rhys McKee 10 days later, breaking the UFC record for the quickest turnaround between UFC wins in the modern era. Then, in September, Chimaev knocked out Gerald Meerschaert. Things slowed down for Chimaev after that. He was booked to face Leon Edwards in December 2020, but that matchup never came to be despite multiple attempts to make the fight happen. The reason behind the numerous cancellations of Edwards vs. Chimaev was COVID-19. When Chimaev finally returned to the Octagon in October 2021, he made short work of Li Jingliang, scoring a submission at 3:16 of Round 1. In his next bout, Chimaev went the distance for the first time in his career, picking up a victory over Gilbert Burns. He followed that with a submission over Kevin Holland. A break of more than a year followed that victory. Chimaev's next outing was an October 2023 matchup against Kamaru Usman, a fight that Chimaev won via decision. Murphy has gone 8-0 with the UFC since that draw, most recently beating former UFC interim title challenger Josh Emmett by decision. The 28-year-old had an up-and-down run with the promotion, but he enters UFC Abu Dhabi on a three-fight winning streak. His record in his past 10 fights is 9-1. His only loss during that span, which dates back to January 2020, is a October 2022 TKO loss to Jeremy Kennedy in a fighter were the doctor stopped the bout because Pico dislocated his shoulder. When announcing the initial UFC 319 co-main event of Movsar Evloev vs. Pico, UFC CEO Dana White called Pico, 'the guy most people consider to be the top free agent in the world.' White added, 'Aaron Pico is a ridiculously violent striker and a very high-level grappler. Pico has had hype behind him since he was a teenager because of his skill and fighting style, which people compare him to the likes of Justin Gaethje or Dustin Poirier.' The Pico vs. Evloev fight fell apart in mid-July when Evloev was pulled from the card due to illness. In the middleweight division bout on the Main Card, the 31-year-old from Makhachkala, Russia, earned a unanimous decision victory after three turbulent rounds. The relentless battle also earned Magomedov and his opponent the UFC's $50,000 Fight of the Night Bonus. UFC Fight Night: Whittaker vs. de Ridder was contested in front of a high-energy crowd inside Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Featuring five fights on the Main Card, the event was broadcast live on ABC television. Monster Energy's Magomedov (16-1) came to Abu Dhabi looking to return to the winner's column after suffering his first loss in the UFC to Michael Page at the UFC Fight Night in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in February 2025. Magomedov's opponent, 35-year-old Barriault (17-10) from Quebec, Canada, wanted to build on his recent win against Bruno Silva at UFC 315 in May 2025. From the start, Barriault pursued aggressively, but Magomedov evaded heavy strikes while causing damage by landing low kicks to his opponent's leading leg. When Barriault landed a takedown, Magomedov lost no time getting back on his feet and dealt punishing elbows to escape the clinch against the fence. The Canadian incurred more damage in his next takedown attempt when Magomedov fired back with a hard knee, followed by a stinging question mark kick before the end of Round 1. The fight escalated in Round 2 when Magomedov continued his fast-footed defense before hurting Barriault with another elbow in the clinch that opened a head wound. Following up with a body kick, Magomedov took control of the fight until Barriault suddenly broke through with a hard jab to the nose that rocked the Russian. Showing his grit under pressure, Magomedov survived the following rush of strikes from Barriault and shifted the scales back in his favor during the final moments of the second round. UFC 320 adds Farid Basharat vs. Chris Gutierrez to Las Vegas event
UFC 320 gains a fun matchup at bantamweight. Farid Basharat is set to take on Chris Gutierrez at the event taking place Oct. 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The event features two title fights, headlined by a light heavyweight title rematch between Magomed Ankalaev and Alex Pereira. Merab Dvalishvili faces Cory Sandhagen in the co-feature for the bantamweight title. MMA Junkie confirmed the booking between Basharat (13-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) and Gutierrez (22-5-2 MMA, 10-3-1 UFC) with two sources. Both fighters competed in 145-pound bouts in their last outing, but will return to 135 pounds. The promotion has not yet officially announced the matchup. Basharat, a Dana White's Contender Series veteran, is undefeated in his professional career. He has turned heads through his first four UFC fights, picking up decision wins over Da'Mon Blackshear, Taylor Lapilus, and Victor Hugo, along with a first-round submission of Kleydson Rodrigues. This will be his first fight of the year. Gutierrez dropped his UFC debut, but then when on a hot streak, putting together an eight-fight unbeaten run.
