‘Halt all terminations…': TCS layoffs prompt NITES to write to Labour Minister; IT employee union wants stay on 12,000 job losses

. India's biggest IT services firm, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on Sunday said it would be laying off around 12,000 employees over the course of the year, which means an approximate 2% cut in its workforce.
With this TCS is set to implement its biggest workforce reduction ever. Previously, the company had terminated approximately 3,000 employees in 2015, which was around 1% of its total staff at that time. This is reportedly the biggest mass layoff that the Indian IT industry is set to witness.
TCS Layoffs: NITES Wants Halt On Terminations
NITES, an IT workers' union, has written a letter to Union labour minister Mansukh Mandaviya, voicing concerns regarding the mass sackings announced by Tata Consultancy Services.
According to an ET report, the IT workers' organisation challenged the legality of these dismissals and requested official instructions be issued to TCS to "halt all terminations and reinstate affected employees."

The union emphasised that permitting a corporation of TCS's magnitude to conduct large-scale layoffs and firings without proper procedures or accountability would establish the wrong standard for other organisations, leading to employment uncertainty, diminished worker protections, and reduced confidence in India's labour environment.
NITES urged the Ministry to hold the company's senior leadership responsible, particularly given the CEO's salary increase during a period of widespread job cuts.
According to TCS's annual report, CEO K Krithivasan received Rs 26.5 crore in FY25, representing a 4.6% increase from the previous financial year. The report indicated that his compensation was 329.8 times the median employee salary.
Additionally, NITES called for an investigation into TCS's delayed onboarding practices.
Earlier this month, the union had highlighted concerns regarding delays in the lateral recruitment of 600 professionals.
Other Trade Unions Also Slam TCS
IT sector employee unions have labelled the dismissals unlawful and encouraged TCS staff facing redundancy to resist resignation pressures. The Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union has appealed to the technology major to withdraw its staff reduction strategy and restore positions of impacted workers.
The Forum for IT Employees (FITE) has recommended that TCS should avoid applying direct pressure on employees to resign. Instead, they advised the company to provide notice period remuneration, severance packages and extend health insurance benefits for a 12-month period.

India braces for higher US tariffs, eyes broader trade deal: Report
India is preparing to face higher US tariffs likely between 20 per cent and 25 per cent on some of its exports as a temporary measure, as it holds off on fresh trade concessions ahead of Washington's August 1 deadline, two Indian government sources said. Instead, New Delhi plans to resume broader trade negotiations when a US delegation visits in mid-August, with the goal of finalising a comprehensive bilateral agreement by September or October, one of the Indian officials told Reuters. "Talks are progressing well, and a delegation is expected in Delhi by mid-August, one of the Indian government officials said, adding that President Donald Trump could issue a tariff letter imposing duties of 20 or 25 per cent in a "worst-case scenario". "However, we assume it would be a temporary measure, considering the five rounds of trade talks that have taken place. A deal will soon be worked out, the official said. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told CNBC on Monday that talks with India required more negotiations as Trump was more interested in good deals than quick deals. India has shown "strong interest in opening portions of its market" though its trade policy had long focussed on protecting domestic interests, Greer said. Piyush Goyal, India's trade minister, told Reuters last week India is making "fantastic" progress in US trade talks. Indian officials said New Delhi has offered tariff cuts on a wide range of goods and is working to ease non-tariff barriers. However, agriculture and dairy remain no-go areas, with India unwilling to allow imports of genetically modified soybean or corn, or to open its dairy sector. Total bilateral goods trade reached about $129 billion in 2024, with India posting a trade surplus of nearly $46 billion. India is holding back on fresh offers while calibrating its strategy amid broader US tariff threats targeting BRICS nations, including India, over issues such as de-dollarisation and purchases of Russian oil, said another official. "We remain hopeful of securing a deal that gives Indian exporters preferential access compared to our peers," the official said. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to media. India's commerce ministry and the US Trade Representative's Office did not immediately respond to emailed requests for comments. "We need more negotiations with our Indian friends to see how ambitious they want to be," Greer said. Analysts said, without a deal, Indian exports could face average US tariffs of around 26 per cent, higher than those faced by Vietnam, Indonesia, Japan or the European Union.

Billionaire Elon Musk-led satellite communications company Starlink will be limited to a maximum of 20 lakh connections in India, Union Minister Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said on Monday, downplaying concerns over its impact on state-run BSNL and other telecom operators. The Minister of State for Telecom made the remarks while speaking on the sidelines of a BSNL review meeting. 'Starlink can have only 20 lakh customers in India and offer up to 200 Mbps speed. That won't affect telecom services,' the minister said. What Will Satcom Services Do? Satcom services are expected to target rural and remote areas where BSNL is known to have a significant presence..A government official mentioned that the limit on Starlink connections is due to its existing capacity. The minister said that the upfront cost for satcom services will be too high and the monthly cost may be around Rs 3,000. The minister also said that BSNL 4G rollout is complete and it does not plan to increase tariffs as of now. 'We want market first. There are no tariff hikes planned,' he said. What Minister Said On BSNL Future Plans? The minister said that BSNL has seen a 20-30 per cent increase in revenue in the first quarter of the current fiscal year due to the rollout of 4G services and technology is settling down. 'Earlier, there were some technical issues but over 90 per cent of them have been sorted out. There were issues around power stations. 30,000 power stations have been replaced with an expenditure of around Rs 600-700 crore,' Pemmasani said, adding that improvement in power supplies has resulted in higher uptime for BSNL networks and enhanced customer's experience. 'Each circle is being given individual targets in terms of increasing subscriber base,' he said, adding that BSNL has had a lot of legacy issues that are being resolved now. When asked about the status of Chinese equipment in BSNL, the minister said that the government plans to continue using indigenous technologies in the state-run firm and it will gradually phase out 2G and 3G equipment and do away with the need for maintenance of that equipment. BSNL has installed 2G and 3G technology using some of the equipment from Chinese vendors, including ZTE. (With Inputs From PTI)
