The New York Yankees have been on a roller coaster ride this season. They have a loaded roster, but they've struggled with injuries, most notably Aaron Judge's recent trip to the injured list.
The trade deadline is approaching quickly, and the Yankees need to make some decisions. They're going to be buyers, as seen with their trades for Ryan McMahon and Amed Rosario, but it's unclear how aggressive they will be.
If the Bronx Bombers are aggressive, there are a few names to acquire that could turn them back into World Series favorites.
MLB's Mark Feinsand recently suggested the Yankees were interested in a trade for star St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley in the coming days.

ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - JULY 25: Ryan Helsley #56 of the St. Louis Cardinals delivers a pitch against the San Diego Padres in the ninth inning at Busch Stadium on July 25, 2025 in St Louis, Missouri. More"Ryan Helsley is one of the most popular trade targets with no less than a half-dozen teams interested to varying degrees. Among the suitors, per sources, are the Yankees, (New York) Mets, (Los Angeles) Dodgers, (Philadelphia) Phillies, (Texas) Rangers, and (Toronto) Blue Jays," Feinsand wrote in a post to Twitter/X on Tuesday morning.
The Yankees have seemingly preferred to hold onto prospects rather than swing big trades. The decision to go after McMahon rather than pay the prospect capital to acquire Eugenio Suárez suggests as much.
If the Yankees are willing to go all in for this year, a deal for the expiring Helsley would work. Helsley is set to hit free agency at the end of the year, where Spotrac projects him to sign for $81 million.
This would be a shocking move for the Yankees to make, but it would certainly move the needle. Keep an eye on the Bronx Bombers in the coming days.

Yankees' Carlos Rodon's outing undone by control issues

Try it free MIAMI — Carlos Rodón's smooth sailing turned into a bruise cruise. The lefty's squandering of most of a six-run lead was not the biggest Yankees pitching story in Friday night's 13-12 loss to the Marlins. Advertisement That distinction belonged to newly acquired reliever Camilo Doval, acquired from the Giants at the trade deadline, who flushed a 12-10 lead in the ninth inning. A close second goes to two other newcomers, Jake Bird and David Bednar, who combined to give up six runs in the seventh inning to turn a 9-3 Yankees lead into a 10-9 Miami advantage. But it was Rodón's collapse that started the ugly trifecta. 'I had a good little run going and then I got real inconsistent, spraying balls,' Rodón said. 'Just not good enough. Five walks, 107 pitches to get 13 outs is pretty unacceptable.' Advertisement Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodon returns to the dugout against the Marlins during the third inning Friday night in Miami. Imagn Images The Yankees' 6-0 lead was built on the strength of a three-run homer by Giancarlo Stanton and a two-RBI single by Cody Bellinger. In the bottom of the fifth, a leadoff walk followed by the two-run homer Rodón yielded to Javier Sanoja may have seemed harmless enough at the time. Two strikeouts and two walks later, after his 107th pitch, Rodón was lifted in favor of Jonathan Loáisiga. Advertisement The reliever promptly hit Otto Lopez with a pitch to load the bases before serving up a two-run single to pinch-hitter Liam Hicks to make it 6-4. 'Rodo was kind of cruising early on there,' Aaron Boone said. 'He just had trouble with the strike zone those last two innings and just got up to a point where I had to go get him. 'Not sure [why],' the manager continued. 'He wasn't off a lot, I didn't feel like. He was just missing on some pitches. Missing on some 3-2 counts. I thought in the early innings he was pretty sharp and I thought stuff was OK, but he just lost the strike zone a little bit.' In June, it was 3.71 in six outings. In July, his six starts produced a 4.24 ERA. And Friday night was an even worse beginning to August. A day earlier, Marcus Stroman was handed a 7-0 lead against the Rays at Yankee Stadium. He gave up four runs in the fourth, left after five and was released by the Yankees on Friday.

Cardinals GM reflects on team-altering deadline

The trade deadline has come and gone for the St. Louis Cardinals. Hovering around .500 on the season, the team made several moves to gear up towards the future. The Cardinals dealt off closer Ryan Helsley, Steven Matz, and Phil Maton at the deadline. Per Katie Woo of The Athletic, Cardinals GM John Mozeliak's intention at the deadline was to sell, and prepare for what's ahead. 'The goal of this trading deadline was about the future, Mozeliak said, per Woo. 'I don't think it's necessarily about the immediate future. It's about the long-term view of the St. Louis Cardinals.' According to Woo, the Cardinals' haul in return for the trades includes a wealth of minor league prospects. SS Jesus Baez, RHP Frank Elissalt and RHP Nate Dohm came in return for the trade that sent Helsley to the New York Mets, RHP Mason Molina and LHP Skylar Hales came from the Texas Rangers in exchange for Phil Maton, and Red Sox prospect Blaze Jordan was the return for Steven Matz. 'We went into this deadline trying to move our expiring contracts,' Mozeliak said, per Woo. 'We were able to do that. The goal of these moves was to position the organization for future talent, not necessarily just guys that are knocking on the door for big-league opportunities next year. It was really about trying to create as much prospect value as possible, and we felt we achieved that.' After evidently kicking the bucket on this current season, the hope for St. Louis is that their return packages can make an impact for the future.
