Team India's predicted XI vs England, H2H stats, most runs, most wickets: All you need to know ahead of 1st Test

Hindustan Times20-06-2025
The five-Test series between England and India, starting June 20 at Headingley, marks a defining moment for both teams, but more so for India, who step into the longest format without three of their era-defining greats: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Their sudden retirement announcements have forced a hard reset, with Shubman Gill now leading a side full of youthful promise.
Gautam Gambhir remains at the helm of the generational transition, as India look to build their next red-ball core. Gill, 25, becomes the country's youngest Test captain since Sachin Tendulkar and will be under scrutiny as he tries to stitch together a cohesive unit from a group full of exciting potential but short on experience in English conditions.
England, meanwhile, are continuing their Bazball experiment under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. They've named a batting-heavy XI for the opener, which could be both a show of confidence and a gamble against an Indian attack led by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
The last time these two sides met in England was during the unfinished 2021–22 series, which India led 2-1 before the fifth Test was postponed. England bounced back to draw the series 2-2 with a record chase at Edgbaston in 2022.
India haven't won a Test series in England since 2007, and with an unproven top-order and several selection headaches, such as Karun Nair's return, Sai Sudharsan's possible debut, and the makeup of the bowling attack, this opener at Headingley will be a litmus test of Gill's leadership and Gambhir's tactical nous.
Openers: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul
Middle-order: Karun Nair, Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (wk)
All-rounders: Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur
Bowlers: Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Kuldeep Yadav
Team India has faced England on 136 occasions in the longest format, clinching victories in 35 Tests, while losing 51. Their last Test series ended in a 4-1 win for India at home, though.
In England, both teams have squared off in 67 Tests, with England winning 36 Tests. India have won 9. In the previous Test series on English soil, however, India performed impressively, taking a 2-1 lead after four matches before the final Test was postponed to next year due to Covid-19 concerns. England eventually won the fifth Test at Edgbaston to draw 2-2.
In their last 10 Tests, India hold a superior record with six wins and a draw.
Joe Root holds the record for most runs in Test matches between the two countries, with 2846 runs to his name. Sachin Tendulkar is the highest among Indians and the second-highest overall, with 2535 runs.
James Anderson, meanwhile, leads the wicket-taking list by a fair margin in Tests between India and England, with 149 dismissals to his name. India's Ravichandran Ashwin is second with 114 wickets. Interestingly, none of the cricketers in the squads across both teams feature in the top 5 in the highest wicket-takers lists.

ENG vs IND 3rd Test, Day 3: KL Rahul-Pant give India a steady start

Day 3 of the third Test between England and India at Lord's began with KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant resuming their innings for the visitors, aiming to reduce England's first-innings lead. The duo gave India a solid start, frustrating the English bowlers with a composed and disciplined approach. By lunch, India had reached 248/4, trimming England's lead down to 139 runs. The morning session was largely positive for India, with both overnight batters showing grit and control. Rishabh Pant, though clearly not at full fitness, displayed remarkable focus. Despite wincing in pain frequently while facing short-pitched deliveries, especially on the pull or hook, Pant remained committed and played with intent. He mixed caution with aggression, reaching his sixth Test fifty in England before being dismissed in unfortunate fashion, a reckless run-out at the non-striker's end just before the break. KL nears his hundred KL Rahul, meanwhile, looked in complete control. Unfazed by the humid conditions or England's probing lines, Rahul batted with composure. He was largely untroubled by deliveries outside off stump and took full advantage of scoring opportunities, rotating the strike effectively and dispatching loose balls to the boundary. During the session, the pair added over 100 runs for the partnership, a stand that visibly frustrated the English bowlers. Chris Woakes, in particular, tried to unsettle Pant by sledging, sarcastically asking if the Indian batter was playing for a draw. Pant's sharp-witted response "Just like you" referred cheekily to England's more defensive approach earlier in the match, a clear contrast to their usual 'Bazball' style. Despite Pant's unfortunate dismissal, India will be the happier side going into lunch. The partnership brought much-needed stability and momentum, with Rahul's century setting the tone. The conditions have been challenging, but India's batters have applied themselves well. As the Test progresses into the second half of Day 3, India will look to build a strong lead and put England under scoreboard pressure in the fourth innings. ‘Why are they in the box in the first place?': Ravi Shastri fumes after 5 balls fail gauge Test during IND vs ENG 3rd Test at Lord's

As the controversy around the Dukes ball and its constant changes leading to slow over rates rumbles on Day 3 of the Lord's Test, Ravi Shastri in the commentary box was left livid due to another ball change during India's innings. The rules as it exists is that when a ball needs to be changed, the umpire slips the ball through a 'ball gauge'; if it slips through without an issue, the same ball is retained, and if it gets stuck, then the ball is changed. Shastri's issue was that along with the process taking some significant of time, the box which contained the balls had five cherries which failed the gauge test, so the former India player asked why they were in the case in the first place. 'It's hard to explain. What's quite amazing is that they checked 5 balls there and five of them did not go through the ring so why are they in the box in the first place?,' Shastri said on commentary. "What was that not decided at the start of the drinks break?" ⌚️ "It's common sense what you're saying. It's basic!" 🤷‍♂️ — Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) July 12, 2025 In the last two Tests both India and England seamers have complained about the ball not swinging as much as it used to before and there have been also instances where they have requested for a ball change saying it gets softer way earlier than usual. While Day 1 of the third Test went without any drama with regards to the ball – it even swung late into second session, on Day 2 the same old issues cropped up. India, which had taken the second new ball late on Day 1, took three wickets at the start of Day 2 with their seamers finding movement both ways. Jasprit Bumrah got one to nip back to take Ben Stokes off-stump while Joe Root and Chris Woakes too perished to deliveries that found movement before the umpires changed the new ball after Indian players seemed to have an issue with it. It isn't clear why India requested for a ball change when they were finding movement, but the replacement ball which was around 10 overs old, soon became problematic for India. It appeared the ball was older than they thought, with the Indian players being visibly upset about its condition. Skipper Shubman Gill was seen having an animated discussion with Sharfudduola Saikat who asked India to carry on with the proceedings. However, the new ball soon became a topic of discussion again. Before the 95th over began, with the seamers not finding any movement whatsoever, Gill would take the ball to Sharfudduola, asking for a change. It will lead to the Indian captain and the umpire having a heated discussion, and Sharfudduola was unmoved, gesturing India to resume the over. Mohammed Siraj too appeared miffed, walking up and asking the umpire, 'Are you serious,' which was picked up by the stump mics.
