Will move a privilege motion for holding closed-door meeting: BRS

The Hindu09-07-2025
Former Minister and senior BRS leader Harish Rao said his party will move a privilege motion in both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council against Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for holding a 'closed-door' meeting on irrigation projects and water rights with Congress legislators at Praja Bhavan on Wednesday.
'Instead of holding an open discussion, it is shameful that the CM lacked the courage to call for an open discussion. This is a blatant insult to democratic values and a breach of legislative privileges,' he said, in a press release.
Strongly condemning Mr. Revanth Reddy's 'baseless and misleading' statements regarding irrigation and water rights in Telangana, he tried to turn the tables accusing the Congress government of 'mortgaging Telangana's rightful share of water resources' and attempting to 'mislead people with fabricated data and staged presentations'.
The senior BRS leader said people are 'laughing' at the government for ignoring farmers' demands for water supply by activating irrigation pumps and instead focusing on 'propaganda-filled PowerPoint presentations'. He accused Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy and Finance Minister Bhatti Vikramarka of exposing their ignorance yet again by 'parroting falsehoods'.
'Unable to confront the truth, you are trying to deceive Telangana with false statistics and misinformation. The entire Telangana society is disgusted by the repeated lies and betrayal of Congress,' said Mr. Harish Rao. The former Minister contested the government's claim of irrigating 50 lakh acres in united A.P. and called it an 'absolute lie'. 'If you have the courage, show us the evidence. The reality is that BRS irrigated 48.74 lakh acres in just nine-and-a-half years. This is confirmed even in the Irrigation department's official reports given to you,' he claimed.
'It was the Congress government which had abandoned the Pranahita-Chevella project because of its own 'inefficiency' and accepted to an unfair 299:512 Krishna water sharing ratio pre-bifurcation. Whereas the KCR government had submitted affidavits for 573 TMC to the tribunal,' he claimed.
Mr. Rao also accused the CM of 'sabotaging' the Medigadda Barrage for not taking up repairs despite 'NDSA's recommendation and L&T's readiness'. The government is now 'conspiring' to transfer Godavari and Krishna rivers' waters to Andhra Pradesh via Banakacherla, he added.

Indian economy devastated by five Modi-inflicted shocks: Congress

The Congress on Friday claimed that the Indian economy has been well and truly devastated by a series of 'five Modi-inflicted shocks', and said the government as well as its cheerleaders are being economical with the truth of the real state of the economy. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said the Modi government, its drumbeaters and cheerleaders are living in a make-believe world. The opposition party's assertions came a day after former Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said everybody except Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman know that the country's economy is 'dead'. In a post on X, Ramesh said, 'Over the past decade, the Indian economy has been well and truly devastated by a series of five Modi-inflicted shocks. Nobody else can be held responsible.' He said demonetisation completely disrupted our growth momentum and destroyed the livelihoods of crores of Indians. 'A fundamentally flawed GST–that is a Tax that is neither Good nor Simple–has wreaked havoc on thousands of business enterprises across the country, except the large companies who can afford to pay the cost associated with GST compliance,' Ramesh said. He further claimed that the record imports from China have led to the closure of lakhs of MSMEs across the country–in Gujarat alone, around a third of the MSMEs in the stainless steel industry have shut down their operations. Exports in key areas are dependent on imports of raw materials, components, and intermediates from China, he said. Ramesh pointed out that private investment has lost the buoyancy it demonstrated during 2004-14. 'Indian industrialists are acquiring citizenship of other countries in an ever increasing measure. The politically motivated and extortionist Raid Raj, coupled with the proliferation of Modani's tentacles, has led to a loss of confidence in the Indian economy,' Ramesh alleged. He argued that wages for the majority of Indians have stagnated in the last decade, across sectors and across classes. 'This is particularly so in rural India. Household savings have fallen sharply just as household debt has ballooned. Private mass consumption, one of the key drivers of growth, is sputtering just as luxury consumption has not ebbed, clearly pointing to sharpening economic inequalities,' the Congress leader said. 'The Modi government, its drumbeaters and cheerleaders are living in a make-believe world. They are being economical with the truth of the real state of the economy,' Ramesh said. On Thursday, Gandhi had alleged that the BJP-led government has destroyed the country's economic, defence and foreign policies, and is 'running the country to the ground'. Speaking with reporters in the Parliament House complex, Gandhi had also claimed that a trade deal with the US will happen and US President Donald Trump will define it. Asked about Trump calling the Indian economy 'dead', the Congress leader had said, 'He is right, everybody knows this except the prime minister and the finance minister. Everybody knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy. I am glad that President Trump has stated a fact.' He had alleged that the BJP has destroyed the Indian economy.

Congress faces backlash over caste imbalance in Kerala leadership revamp

THIRUVANTHAPURAM: As the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) gears up for a major organisational overhaul, internal concerns are mounting over the lack of representation for marginalised communities, particularly the Ezhava community, the largest OBC group in the state. Once known for its strong community arithmetic, the Congress in Kerala now finds itself facing a critical challenge: ensuring equitable caste representation within its leadership. This issue has come to the fore as the party deliberates on appointments to key posts, including new KPCC office bearers and district Congress committee (DCC) presidents. Amid growing criticism, the remarks by Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan have intensified the debate. Following the removal of K Sudhakaran from the KPCC president's post, Natesan accused Opposition Leader V D Satheesan of influencing the change and alleged anti-Ezhava bias. 'In the top posts of Congress, there is no OBC representation now,' a senior Congress leader admitted to TNIE. 'Though Adoor Prakash is the UDF convenor, he does not hold a leadership position within the party. The available data calls into question the Congress leadership's claims on social engineering,' he added. Of the 14 DCCs in the state, only four presidents belong to the Ezhava community. Among the 14 Congress MPs, just two are from the community. Out of the party's 22 MLAs, only one represents the Ezhavas. Notably, none of the three newly appointed working presidents of KPCC hail from this group.
