Pasquantino Hits Two-Run Single in 7th Inning as Royals Beat Mariners 3-2

Al Arabiya17 hours ago
Vinnie Pasquantino had a two-run single in the seventh inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 3–2 on Thursday night.
Bobby Witt Jr. tied the score 1–1 with a single to center field with one out and then stole second base to put two runners in scoring position. Pasquantino grounded a single to right field, driving in both runners. Witt scored after making an elusive move to avoid the tag from catcher Cal Raleigh to give the Royals a two-run lead.
Seth Lugo (6–5) allowed just one run on six hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out seven. Lucas Erceg and Taylor Clarke got two outs each, and Carlos Estévez pitched 1 1/3 innings to get his 24th save. Estévez gave up a leadoff homer to Dominic Canzone in the ninth and had runners on second and third after a wild pitch with one out but struck out Julio Rodríguez and got Raleigh to ground out to end the game.
Jorge Polanco homered in the fourth inning to put the Mariners up 1–0 and also had two doubles. Logan Evans, recalled from Triple-A Tacoma, made his first big league start since May 10 and gave up three hits in 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He walked one and struck out three.
Casey Legumina (4–4) walked the first two batters to begin the seventh inning and was replaced by Carlos Vargas, who gave up the run-scoring hits to Witt and Pasquantino.
Key moment: The Royals capitalized on consecutive walks by Kyle Isbel and Jonathan India against Legumina to start the seventh, setting the stage for Witt and Pasquantino.
Key stat: Witt has now hit safely in his last 23 road games, breaking Hal McRae's 42-year-old Kansas City record.
Up next: Royals LHP Kris Bubic (6–6, 2.25 ERA) opens a three-game series at Arizona against Diamondbacks LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (3–4, 5.13). Mariners RHP Bryan Woo (7–4, 2.93 ERA) faces Pirates LHP Bailey Falter (7–4, 2.93).

Reliever Santillan strikes out Bohm with bases loaded in the 8th, Reds beat Phillies 9-6

Spencer Steer hit a two-RBI double to spark a five-run third inning, and Reds reliever Tony Santillan struck out Alec Bohm with the bases loaded to end the eighth and lead Cincinnati past the Philadelphia Phillies 9–6 on Friday. Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo lasted only two-plus innings, and Reds starter Andrew Abbott – both pitchers entered with seven wins – couldn't get out of the fourth. The Reds or Phillies scored at least one run in each of the first six innings, and the defending NL East champion Phillies finished with 14 hits. The Reds had 11. Nick Castellanos hit a two-run homer in the first inning to help stake Luzardo (7–5) to a 3–0 lead. Luzardo pitched like an All-Star deep into May with an ERA hovering under 2.00 through his first 10 starts. He has been rocked in most of his outings since. He allowed a run in the second inning and gave up two run-scoring singles, a sacrifice fly, and Steer's double in the third that made it 6–3. Elly De La Cruz added an RBI single in the fourth, and the Reds tacked on two more runs in the fifth for a 9–4 lead. Sam Moll – one of seven Reds pitchers – tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win, and Emilio Pagán got his 19th save. Santillan truly saved the game when he caught Bohm looking on a 98 mph fastball to keep the score 9–6. Key moment: Trailing 7–4 in the fifth, the Phillies had runners on the corners with one out and Kyle Schwarber at bat. Schwarber hit a comebacker to the pitcher, who got the forceout at second. Edmundo Sosa hesitated on the basepath and got a late jump before he decided to scurry home. De La Cruz nailed Sosa at the plate to end the inning. Key stat: Reds manager Terry Francona moved four wins away from becoming the 13th manager to win 2,000 games. Up next: The Reds send LHP Nick Lodolo (5–5, 3.52 ERA) to the mound against Phillies LHP Ranger Suárez (7–2, 2.00 ERA).

Boston's Lucas Giolito Beats Nationals In His Return To Washington

Boston Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito made a memorable return to Washington on Friday and continued a monthlong surge in the process. The right-hander threw 7 2/3 innings in his first career outing against the team that drafted him, allowing one run in Boston's 11–2 victory over the Washington Nationals. Giolito gave up four hits while striking out seven to earn his first victory at Nationals Park–an experience that was tinged with little sentimentality. 'Not really,' Giolito said. 'It's so long ago. Nine, 10 years ago I debuted here. I was definitely excited to come back because it's been so long… I'm not facing any of the same guys. It's a different team now.' Giolito, Washington's first-round pick in 2012, reached the majors in 2016 and posted a 6.75 ERA in six appearances that season. But he hadn't faced the Nationals since they dealt him to the Chicago White Sox the following December as part of a package of prospects for outfielder Adam Eaton, who helped Washington win the World Series in 2019. 'I pitched very different back then–very long arm action,' Giolito said. 'I think every baseball player's career you have your ups and downs, you have your trials and tribulations, highs and lows, however you want to put it. It's been a long road. I look forward to many more, even the downs. When you come back from those it's probably more satisfying than being good all the time.' Giolito went on to pitch seven seasons with the White Sox, with stops with the Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland late in the 2023 season before missing all of last year after elbow surgery. A hamstring strain kept the 30-year-old out until April 30 this season, and he surrendered at least six runs in three of his first seven starts. But in five outings since June 10, he is 4–0 with an 0.83 ERA. In that span, he has lowered his ERA from 6.42 to 3.66. He was sharp against the Nationals, scattering four hits and three walks while throwing a season-high 108 pitches in his longest outing since August 9, 2021. 'He didn't want to come out,' manager Alex Cora said. 'I appreciate that. He's a competitor. He feels like the more pitches he throws, the better it is for him.'

Mets' Buttó Goes on 15-Day Injured List With Unspecified Illness. Senga To Make Rehab Start Saturday

New York Mets reliever José Buttó was put on the 15-day injured list Friday with an unspecified illness. 'We're not going to get into the details of it out of respect for Buttó, but we don't anticipate this being a long-term issue,' Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'We expect him to be back right after the All-Star break.' Mendoza said he didn't anticipate that Buttó will need to go on a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment. A 27-year-old right-hander, Buttó is 2–1 with a 2.47 ERA in 31 relief appearances, the last a two-inning outing at Pittsburgh last Saturday. New York recalled right-hander Chris Devenski from Triple-A Syracuse. Brought up for the fourth time this season, the 34-year-old right-hander has made four appearances for the Mets. Right-hander Kodai Senga, sidelined since June 12 by a strained right hamstring, is to start a rehab assignment Saturday with Double-A Binghamton. He is to throw 60–65 pitches, according to Mendoza, and soon could return to New York's injury-ravaged rotation. 'We'll see how it goes tomorrow and then see how he responds, and we'll have a decision after that,' Mendoza said. New York didn't have an update on reliever Dedniel Núñez, who was put on the IL on Thursday because of a sprained right elbow and could require Tommy John surgery for the second time. 'He's going to visit a doctor next week because of a holiday weekend,' Mendoza said.
