CISF strength to reach 220K as govt approves 30% increase
In several zones reclaimed from Maoist influence, the security of key installations — such as National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) in Dantewada and various steel and iron ore plants in Bhilai — has already been handed over to the CISF.
'From next year onwards, as development projects expand in LWE regions, there will be a rising demand for robust security. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has also approved the formation of an additional CISF battalion, which will be deployed for internal security and contingency duties,' an official said requesting anonymity.
Confirming the development, DIG (intelligence) Ajay Dahiya stated that the MHA has approved increasing the CISF's strength from 1,62,000 to 220,000. 'Last year, 13,230 personnel were inducted into the force, and recruitment for another 24,098 is underway. We aim to add about 14,000 personnel annually to infuse young blood and make the force more battle-ready,' he said.
He further noted that with the decline of LWE activities in states like Chhattisgarh, the setting up of new industrial hubs is expected, thereby necessitating an expanded CISF presence. 'The enhanced strength will allow the CISF to cover a broader range of critical infrastructure, including airports, ports, thermal and nuclear power plants, as well as high-risk installations such as hydropower projects and prisons in Jammu and Kashmir,' Dahiya added.
The MHA's finance division, according to a communication seen by HT, informed the CISF chief on July 22, 2025 that the President via the MHA had approved the authorised ceiling strength of the force to 220,000.
The Chhattisgarh government has introduced a new industrial policy aimed at attracting investors to these emerging regions.
The Centre has set a target to eliminate LWE and bring an end to Maoist violence across the country by March 31, 2026. As security forces continue to take control of new areas in the Bastar region, the government is simultaneously focusing on development—planning the establishment of industries, schools, and employment opportunities for local communities.
Indian Railways is also extending its network to previously inaccessible LWE zones. Maoist groups have occasionally targeted railway workers during construction because of which the Railways have asked for security.
At present, the CISF guards 369 vital installations across the country, including the Parliament. In Jammu and Kashmir, the force is responsible for securing 11 key sites, such as the Kargil Hydroelectric Project in Bandipora, the Kishanganga Dam in Gurez, and hydropower projects in Uri-I and Uri-II. Several of these installations are located near the Line of Control, making them particularly vulnerable to cross-border threats.

MHA approves CISF's five-year plan to add 70,000 more personnel in next five years
NEW DELHI: Aligning with the expansion plan of industrial units in areas of security concerns, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved a proposal of fresh induction 70, 000 personnel in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in next five years with an aim to recruit 14,000 of them each year, officials said on Monday. The officials said that once the recruitment process gets completed in the next five years, the CISF is set to become a force with a total strength of 2.20 lakh personnel. A senior official said, 'The proposed expansion plan is aligned with the increasing demands of securing critical infrastructure across the nation, including Parliament House, metro networks, airports, industrial units, and strategic installations. Soon industrial units are expected to come up in areas of security concerns like naxal-affected zones and Jammu & Kashmir. Currently the total strength of the CISF is a little over 1.5 lakh, which was nearly one lakh in 2014, the officials said, adding that recently the MHA has given its formal approval to increase the sanctioned strength of the force to 2.20 lakh to meet evolving national security needs. One of the major catalysts for this expansion was the security breach involving coloured smoke bomb episodes inside the Parliament House. In response, the government had decided to assign the security task to the CISF. This was a shift from earlier multi-agency security to a more centralized, specialized model under CISF's command. The role of CISF has expanded steadily with India's economic growth, covering not just public sector undertakings but also private sector units that significantly contribute to the economy. The force now guards nuclear power stations, airports, metro networks, and major industrial hubs -making it one of the most critical arms of India's internal security. Meanwhile, keeping in view the ever increasing demand for internal security duties with regard to combat roles, CISF personnel are also sent for war training in collaboration with the Indian Army, especially after the success of Operation Sindoor. Another senior official said, 'The fresh recruitment drive and training expansion are part of a larger modernisation plan that includes upgrading equipment, adopting tech-based surveillance systems, and improving rapid response capabilities.'

4 dists in southern belt report violence-free Martyrs' Week
Koraput: The Maoist-sponsored Martyrs' Week ended on Sunday without any incidence of violence being reported in the rebel-hit districts of Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri, police said. DIG (south-western range) Kanwar Vishal Singh said that no untoward incident was reported throughout the week. "Presently, the situation is under control. However, we cannot afford to be complacent. Security forces remain on high alert to deal with any Maoist threat," he added. Celebrated annually from July 28 to August 3 by the outlawed CPI (Maoist), Martyrs Week commemorates the death of Naxalite ideologue Charu Majumdar, who died in police custody on July 28, 1972. The period is typically marked by a spike in Maoist propaganda activities, including the erection of temporary martyr pillars, cultural programmes in remote forested areas and public addresses promoting the group's ideology, particularly in tribal regions. To counter any Maoist activity, extensive security arrangements were made across the four districts, with particular focus on areas bordering Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Chhattisgarh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Undo In Malkangiri, considered one of the worst Maoist-affected districts, SP Vinod Patil said that all police stations were on high alert, with additional forces deployed to sensitive areas. Koraput and Nabarangpur also witnessed intensified patrolling, especially in regions close to the Chhattisgarh border. "The northern part of Nabarangpur remains a focus area for us and extra deployment has been made to thwart any Maoist movement," Singh added. Though no Maoist posters or banners related to the observance were found this year, police said that vehicles entering the region were thoroughly frisked throughout the week to prevent infiltration or arms movement. Police said that surveillance and anti-Maoist operations would continue even after the culmination of Martyrs Week. Round-the-clock monitoring and coordinated action will remain in force to ensure lasting peace in the region, the DIG said. On Sunday, a landmine explosion allegedly triggered by Maoists killed one railway employee and wounded another while they were conducting track inspection in Sundargarh district, along the Odisha-Jharkhand border, police said. Posters were recovered near the damaged track with Maoists claiming responsibility for the attack.
