Gurugram: MCG to penalise bulk waste violators, launches enforcement drive
The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) will launch a city-wide enforcement campaign against Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) found violating the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, in a bid to improve sanitation and enforce environmental norms. To be sure, BWGs—defined as establishments generating 100 kilograms or more of waste per day—are legally obligated to segregate waste at the source into wet, dry, and hazardous categories. (HT Archive) The civic body will start issuing fines to non-compliant establishments from Monday, with the initial round involving issuance of notices and strict fines for continued violations. 'Entities not following the solid waste management norms will now face strict penalties. Initially, notices will be issued, and if non-compliance persists, heavy fines will follow,' said MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya, adding that the initiative is part of a broader awareness campaign. 'Despite repeated awareness campaigns, compliance remains poor. Now is the time for strict enforcement,' Dahiya said. To be sure, BWGs—defined as establishments generating 100 kilograms or more of waste per day—are legally obligated to segregate waste at the source into wet, dry, and hazardous categories. These include large housing societies, hotels, industrial units, institutional buildings, and office complexes. While wet waste must be composted on-site, dry and hazardous waste should be handed over to authorised recyclers, the MCG said. Officials clarified that the drive is not meant to be punitive alone but also aims to strengthen compliance and awareness among high-volume waste producers. The civic body has also urged all BWGs to implement proper segregation and disposal systems, promising technical assistance for those who need it. The move, authorities believe, will improve Gurugram's waste management ecosystem and position it as a model for sustainable urban living.

Ravi Dahiya resumes training after surgery, says 'Hopeful of making it to LA 2028 Olympics'
Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Ravi Kumar Dahiya has revealed that he has resumed training after a successful surgery and is now hopeful of making it to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Dahiya sustained an injury during a practice bout at the Chhatrasal Stadium in February 2023. Scans revealed grade 2 tears on his right knee in Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) and Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). "I've resumed training after my surgery. It was unfortunate to miss the Paris Olympics due to injury, but I'm hopeful of making it to Los Angeles. Fingers crossed," Dahiya told IANS. He was last seen in action at the 2022 World Championships in Belgrade in September. The Birmingham Commonwealth Games champion lost in the first round to Uzbekistan's Gulomjon Abdullaev in the 57kg category. The 27-year-old wrestler believes the new sports policy - 'Mukhyamantri Khel Protsahan Yojana' headed by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta - will boost the confidence of players and athletes across the national capital. 'The new sports policy of the Delhi Government is very impressive. It will benefit athletes at the grassroots level. There will be improved infrastructure and increased prize money for Delhi athletes. This will boost the confidence of players across the city,' he added. The new policy has increased incentives for athletes across all levels. Olympic and Paralympic medal winners now receive more than twice the previous remuneration. Also, depending on their performance, the state will provide top medal winners with secure government employment in Group A, B, or C positions in addition to financial incentives. By providing more funding for training, nutrition, and grassroots involvement, the program seeks to empower young people, keep athletic potential in Delhi, and advance the growth of sports more broadly. Dahiya recently decided to move up in the weight category to improve his chances of prolonging his career and aim for a medal in the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028. While the next Olympic weight category for the LA Olympics 2028 is 65kg, Dahiya has been in and out of competitions in the past few years due to injuries and has been competing in the non-Olympic 61kg weight category.

Ggm improves position, but still at 41st spot in Swachh rankings
In a significant jump, Gurugram climbed up to the 41st position in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 rankings, up from 140th last year. At the state level, the city secured seventh place among 20 districts in Haryana. The annual urban cleanliness assessment, conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under the Swachh Bharat Urban Mission, awarded Gurugram 8,667 points out of 12,500. The city achieved a high score of 99% in waste processing, 90% cleanliness in residential areas, 85% in market areas, and 100% of water bodies (HT Archive) Gurugram's performance, while showing commendable strengths, also highlighted several key shortcomings. While officials from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) attributed the improved ranking to focused sanitation drives, citizen engagement and enhanced waste processing, several residents expressed surprise and concern over the contrast between reported data and visible ground conditions. According to the detailed assessment, Gurugram received a high percentage in parameters such as waste processing efficiency, cleanliness of residential areas, and maintenance of water bodies. However, the city underperformed in several crucial aspects such as source segregation of waste, door-to-door collection coverage and remediation of legacy dumpsites. Municipal commissioner Pradeep Dahiya, acknowledged the need for targeted improvements despite the overall progress. He said that the city's improved performance is the result of collaboration among officials, sanitation staff, and the community. 'While reaching the 41st spot is a positive step, we are aiming higher. Steps are already being taken to strengthen waste collection systems, enhance segregation at the source, and scale up awareness drives in collaboration with resident welfare associations. Tenders have been floated for four private agencies to manage door-to-door collection in select wards, and we are monitoring sanitation issues daily,' said Dahiya. However, many citizens have raised concerns about the real condition of sanitation across Gurugram. Chaitali Mandhotra, RWA member from Ardee City, expressed skepticism over the ranking. 'I was surprised by Gurugram's rank this year because garbage dumps all over the city are not a secret. What shocks me more is that Gurugram gathered maximum brownie points for dumpsite remediation. The city has gone terribly wrong in managing landfills, collecting, and segregating waste. Should we say that Swachh Bharat is not successful anywhere in India, which led to Gurugram climbing the ladder even with such a poor state on the ground?' said Mandhotra. The survey is considered the world's largest urban cleanliness assessment and plays a key role in incentivizing cities to improve sanitation and waste management practices. According to MCG officials, this year's performance was impacted due to poor performance of previous agencies, which disrupted the door-to-door waste collection services in many areas. The city has also earned a Water plus certification for its advanced sewage treatment and water reuse systems, a major milestone in sustainable urban planning. Vaishali Rana, a city-based environmentalist, raised concerns over the disparity between official data and on-ground realities. 'It's disheartening to see Gurugram celebrated for its ranking when the experience of residents tells a different story. The low source segregation rate, rampant garbage dumps, and poorly maintained public toilets paint a grim picture. A high score in waste processing means little if the waste is not being collected or segregated properly at the source. The survey mechanism needs to go beyond paperwork and look at the lived environment of residents. Cleanliness must reflect in streets, not just in reports,' said Rana. Officials said that the next steps will focus on strengthening public toilet maintenance, boosting source segregation compliance, and accelerating legacy waste treatment. As Gurugram eyes a place among the top 20 cities in the next assessment cycle, civic officials have urged residents to actively participate in cleanliness efforts and hold municipal bodies accountable.

Saha, 40, retired from first-class cricket in January this year at the end of Bengal's league stage campaign in the Ranji Trophy. It is understood that former Bengal skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla will continue as the head coach of the senior team, while former off-spinner Saurashis Lahiri will coach the U-19 team. 'The CAB brass will be zeroing in on all the candidates for various teams by next week. Obviously, Wriddhi has been sounded out, and a final decision will be taken next week. Apart from Sourav Ganguly and Pankaj Roy, he is the biggest name from Bengal with 40 Tests," a senior CAB source told PTI on the condition of anonymity. 'His experience of playing top-level cricket for so long will only help the Gen-Next of Bengal cricket. Wriddhi already runs a chain of coaching centres, and he has been a very hands-on coach for juniors. He is passionate about coaching. Hopefully, he will be ready," the source said. While there is not much precedence in Bengal cricket about players being drafted into the coaching system immediately after retirement, Saha's case is slightly different considering his stature in state cricket. Sarandeep is the current Delhi head coach, while Dahiya has handled the state team on a couple of occasions in the past.
