AAP pulls out all stops ahead of June 19 bypoll
With the high-stakes Ludhiana (West) byelection slated for June 19 fast approaching, AAP is pulling out all stops to woo urban voters. The state Cabinet gave its nod to the land pooling policy for 27 towns and cities during a meet chaired by the CM last Monday. The following day, it okayed a proposal to waive off the loans taken by 4,727 families belonging to the SC community that amount to a staggering `68 crore. Then on Wednesday it cleared an amendment to the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act of 1958 to reduce compliance burdens on 95% of small businesses.
Cracks appear in Punjab Congress leadership
Even during an election season, the grand old party fails to put up a united front. Every now and then, internal rifts make headlines, much to the embarrassment of the top Congress leadership. And the party just can't catch a break! The posters released for its Ludhiana (West) candidate, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, have renewed speculation of a power play. Why? Because they notably don't feature photos of state unit president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and Lok Sabha MP from Gurdaspur Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. While the party may insist that all is well, the divide couldn't be more apparent.

He warned that AAP leaders Isudan Gadhvi and Gopal Italia could be targeted too and possibly arrested before the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections. Despite the pressure, Kejriwal asserted that neither he nor his party would be deterred by such 'vengeful tactics'.

As more slum dwellers told to move, Delhi CM assures justice
Reiterating that unauthorised slums will be removed from Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday said that the government has allocated a budget Rs 700 crore to provide accommodation to eligible slum dwellers. 'Whenever slums need to be removed for any reason, arrangements are being made to provide houses to the eligible residents…,' she said at the 'Faatak wali jhuggi' near the railway crossing in Shalimar Bagh on Sunday morning. The Railways has issued a notice for the removal of the sum cluster, citing that it is located on railway land needed for the expansion of the Azadpur railway station. 'You will get complete justice. The Delhi government is fully committed to this,' Gupta told the slum dwellers. 'When a crisis came upon you, I came to meet you because the Delhi government is not in favour of removing slums without reason… If slums have to be removed for development projects or other legitimate reasons, the government will ensure proper rehabilitation for the eligible residents so they too can become part of Delhi's growth story,' she added. This comes amid the recent demolition of unauthorised slums at Madrasi Camp, Bhoomiheen Camp, Jailerwala Bagh Camp and Taimoor Nagar in the Capital. Taking on AAP and Congress, Gupta said that in the last 40 years, no development has taken place in Delhi's slums. 'These parties have only seen slum dwellers as voters and constantly tried to exploit them, while also damaging the city's geographical character,' she said. The AAP, meanwhile, said in a statement, 'The CM has been constantly lying on this issue. First, on completion of 100 days of her government, she claimed no jhuggi will be demolished. And on the very next day, hundreds of jhuggis were demolished at Madrasi Camp. Later, thousands of people have to rendered homeless at Jailerwala Bagh, Bawana, Moti Nagar, Kalkaji etc.' 'We challenge Rekha Gupta to publish the list of jhuggis that have been demolished and names of people who have been given flats by them. They are trying to fool the people by giving flats to just a few of them and making others homeless,' the party added. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, too, said on Sunday that hundreds of slum dwellers in Delhi are going through the pain of being rendered homeless with their houses being destroyed by the BJP government, as he claimed that this 'atrocity' exposes the ruling party's 'insensitivity' towards the poor and its 'arrogance of power'. The leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha shared a video of his recent visit to Delhi's Ashok Vihar area where houses of several people were brought down by the administration. The small houses in which they had settled their entire life were 'ruthlessly destroyed' by the BJP government, he alleged in his post in Hindi on X along with the video.

Policy reunites Punjab farmers, tractor rally to set the tone
Bathinda: Having lost momentum after Punjab Police forcibly removed their protests at Shambhu and Khanauri borders with Haryana, farm groups and individual farmers are joining hands again in Punjab — all thanks to the contentious land pooling policy introduced by the AAP govt. Fearing that the policy means they could lose their land, farmers and even those not associated with unions are turning to farm groups to lead the opposition to the policy that envisions state govt taking possession of land by paying Rs 1 lakh a year and developing it into a residential-commercial zone, and returning booths and residential plots to the landowner. The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) — which had spearheaded the 2020-2021 farm stir on the borders of Delhi — has also okayed the decision of its Punjab chapter to hold tractor marches on July 30 in villages which could be affected by the policy. A call for support to the protest by the national committee of the farm forum Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) has also emboldened the SKM and farmers. Farmers have already started installing flex boards warning Aam Aadmi Party leaders and govt officials from entering their land to promote the policy. Many villages have started coming up with resolutions against the scheme, and it has been learnt that opposition has reached over 100 villages in the state. Though the biggest chunk of land is to be collected in Ludhiana district, small tracts have been identified in Bathinda, Moga, and Ferozepur districts too. In Bathinda, farmers in three villages — Jodhpur Romana, Naruana, and Patti Jhuttika — have already sounded a bugle of protest as 848 acres of land has been identified there under the policy. In Jodhpur Romana, the identified land is nearly 600 acres. Farmers from Jodhpur Romana village attended a meeting convened by farm organisations affiliated with SKM on Saturday and announced their plan to agitate and participate in tractor marches on July 30. Apart from tractor marches by SKM, some other organisations have decided to hold protests at DC offices on July 31. On that day, farm leader Balbir Singh Rajewal is scheduled to address a gathering on land pooling at Lehragaga in Sangrur. "We are determined to oppose the land pooling scheme and do not want to part with our fertile lands. We will go to any length to stop our land from being taken forcibly, and for this, we have approached farmer organisations," said Jodhpur Romana farmers Karnail Singh and Balwant Singh in the presence of farmer organisation BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) secretary Shingara Singh Mann.
