Alex Rodriguez sees Napheesa Collier following his path as he takes control of Timberwolves, Lynx
The Yankees great — who made the jump from MLB superstar to CEO of A-Rod Corp., and now co-owner of the NBA's Timberwolves and the WNBA's Lynx — heaped praise on Lynx veteran Napheesa Collier for building a business empire while in the prime of her career.
'Napheesa is an incredible example and role model for other athletes, both men and women, that you can take something in sports and not take your eye off the ball, but yet build something really equally as special on the business side,' Rodgriguez told The Post while speaking on behalf of his partnership with Lysol. 'So, hats off to her.'

Collier, a five-time WNBA All-Star and 2024 Euroleague Champion, and the Liberty's Breanna Stewart founded Unrivaled, which is a 3v3 professional women's basketball league that plays in Miami during the WNBA offseason — offering the highest average salaries in women's sports history, equity in the league, top-tier amenities, housing and childcare.
Collier, who is averaging 23.5 points and 7.7 assists, is in the conversation for MVP after being a runner-up last season to Aces star A'ja Wilson, who won her third career MVP award.

The NBA Board of Governors unanimously approved the sale of the controlling interest in the Timberwolves and Lynx to Rodriguez and Marc Lore last month following four years as limited partners.
The 2009 World Series champion said he's using knowledge passed down to him by former Yankees owner, George Steinbrenner, who died in 2010.

'I gotta tell you, I played for almost 25 years in the major leagues and to be able to take some of my practices that I've learned from the life of George Steinbrenner, who was a great boss and an incredible role model,' Rodriguez said. 'He expected only the best, so I was able to learn from the best in the business, that was great.

'Over the last four years [as a limited partner], I've done an incredible amount of listening and learning and studying … and we have so many incredible governors in our game. We have an amazing commissioner Adam Silver, who said, 'I want you to do a lot of listening, not a lot of talking and just be a student and learn from some of the great partners.''

The Timberwolves' season ended in a Game 5 loss to the Thunder in the Western Conference finals — the second straight year Minnesota fell one round short of its first trip to the NBA Finals.
With the second half of the WNBA season underway, the league-leading Lynx (22-5) are poised for a second consecutive trip to the Finals after falling to the Liberty last season.

'I'm really proud,' said Rodriguez, a 14-time MLB All-Star. 'The last two years for the Timberwolves, we've been in the final four of 30 teams. And the Lynx, last year were the final two, came down to the wire, we lost to the Liberty.
'And this year, we were off to a hot start with the Lynx. It's an exciting time. Folks in Minnesota have been very supportive and it's an incredible sports town.'

Rodriguez was also complimentary of Nets owners Clara and Joe Tsai, who bought the Liberty from James Dolan for a reported $10 to $14 million in 2019.
The Liberty's valuation is on track to increase to $450 million after the installation of the team's new $80 million practice facility in Greenpoint.
'She's a powerhouse,' Rodriguez said of Clara. 'I really have a lot of respect and admiration for Claire Tsai and Joe, of course.'

BOSTON (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani is expected to start on the mound Wednesday as he continues his buildup from elbow surgery that kept him from pitching all last season. Manager Dave Roberts said Sunday before the Dodgers faced the Boston Red Sox in the finale of their three-game series that the plan is for Ohtani to work four innings at Cincinnati, with an off day to recover before hitting in a game. With the Japanese superstar working his way back along with left-hander Blake Snell, who pitched 4 2/3 innings on Saturday in his fourth rehab start for Triple-A Oklahoma City, the Dodgers will be using a six-man rotation. They currently have Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Glasnow, Dustin May, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Emmet Sheehan in the rotation. 'Shohei is going to go on Wednesday and then he'll probably pitch the following Wednesday, so that probably lends itself to the six-man,' Roberts said. In Ohtani's last start, he allowed one run and four hits in three innings against Minnesota on July 22. He struck out three and walked one, throwing 46 pitches, 30 for strikes. Roberts feels like this season is sort of a rehab year in the big leagues and doesn't foresee the team extending Ohtani's workload deep into games for a while. 'I think this whole year on the pitching side is sort of rehab, maintenance,' he said. 'We're not going to have the reins off where we're going to say: 'Hey you can go 110 pitches.' I don't see that happening for quite some time. I think that staying at four (innings) for a bit, then build up to five and we'll see where we can go from there.' Also Sunday, the club activated right-handed reliever Blake Treinen from the injured list and recalled left-hander Justin Wrobleski. The 37-year-old Treinen was a big part of last season's run to the World Series title, picking up two victories in the Series against the New York Yankees. He has been sidelined since April 19 because of forearm tightness. 'I think the only thing I'm going to be mindful of is the up-down,' Roberts said on Treinen's usage. 'To come into an inning of leverage, I have no problem.' Wrobleski, 25, is with the Dodgers for the fourth time this season. He's a starter now, but Roberts said he'll work out of the bullpen. 'Just trying to get a quality arm, get some length, potentially using him in two-inning stints, three-inning stints is going to be helpful for our 'pen," Roberts said. 'The goal is to get the best pitchers on your roster in whatever role.' Fever beat Wings, extend winning streak to four games: Highlights
The Indiana Fever have been without superstar Caitlin Clark for more than half of the season due to injury, but that hasn't stopped the team from putting together its longest winning streak of the year. The Fever defeated the Dallas Wings 88-78 on Friday, Aug. 1 at the American Airlines Center, extending Indiana's winning streak to four games in a collective team effort. Four of five Indiana starters scored in double digits. "This is the second half of the season. We know the margin of error is very small," said guard Aari McDonald, who finished with 15 points, while hitting four of six 3-pointers. "When four people are in double figures and they are all offensive threats, I think that opens up the floor for us." Kelsey Mitchell led the way with 23 points and three assists. Aliyah Boston recorded her fifth consecutive double-double and is up to 13 double-doubles on the season, second only to to the Chicago Sky's Angel Reese (17). Natasha Howard also finished with a double-double, tallying 11 points and 16 rebounds, which tied her career-high for rebounds. The Fever improved to 16-2 on the season and 8-7 without Clark in the lineup. The Fever dominated from beyond the arc, knocking down 12-of-28 3-pointers. The Wings were limited to two 3-pointers and were out-rebounded 44-30, including 14 offensive rebounds for Indiana compared to four for Dallas. Paige Bueckers had a team-high 22 points, four assist and two steals in the loss. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft was the only Wings player to reach double figures. The Fever now lead the regular-season series vs. the Wings, 3-0. Indiana won the first matchup of the season 94-86 without Clark, who was sidelined at the time with a left groin injury. Fans got the highly-anticipated matchup between Clark and Bueckers on July 13 in Indianapolis, which the Fever won 102-83. Clark had 14 points, 13 assists and five steals in that victory, while Bueckers had 21 points and two steals in the loss. USA TODAY sports had full coverage of Friday night's game. Indiana Fever vs. Dallas Wings: Full highlights Paige Bueckers returns after hard fall Bueckers checked back into the game at the beginning of the fourth quarter after suffering a hard fall in the third quarter. Bueckers got right back to business and is up to a game-high 22 points, cutting the Wings' deficit to six points with 5:33 remaining in the game. End of Q3: Fever 68, Wings 57 The Fever have a 13-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, led by 18 points and three rebounds from Kelsey Mitchell. Aliyah Boston and Natasha Howard are both closing in on double-doubles. Boston added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Howard is up to nine points and 13 rebounds. Paige Bueckers appeared to be shaken up in the third quarter after fighting through a screen set by the Fever's Boston with 4:03 remaining. Bueckers went down hard and appeared to grab her right thigh area as she writhed in pain on the ground. She was able to get up under her own power before limping over to the bench. Buckers had a team-high 18 points, three rebounds and two assists before being subbed out. No other Wings player has reached double-digits in scoring and they have yet to knock down a 3-pointer (0-of-8) so far. Myisha Hines-Allen has nine points off the bench, while Arike Ogunbowale added eight points and five assists. Halftime: Fever 48, Wings 42 The Fever led by as many as eight points in the second quarter and take a six point lead into halftime. The Fever are 13-4 this season when leading at halftime, while the Wings are 1-17 when trailing at the half. Natasha Howard is up to nine points and eight rebounds, while Kelsey Mitchell also scored nine points. The Fever have lived in the paint, scoring 24 of their 48 points from close range, but the addition of Chloe Bibby has helped Indiana stretch the floor. She's up to six points off the bench, shooting a perfect 2-of-2 from the 3-point line. Paige Bueckers has a game-high 15 points, three assists, two rebounds and no turnovers. Bueckers has reached double-digit points in all 23 games she's played in her rookie season. Arike Ogunbowale has six points, and Myisha Hines-Allen added seven points off the bench. Haley Jones was limited in the second quarter with four fouls after picking up two fouls in a matter of 13 seconds. The Wings are 0-of-5 from three, but they've knocked down 12-of-13 free throws to remain close. The Fever are 5-of-15 from beyond the arc and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. End of Q1: Fever 22, Wings 22 Things are all tied up after a back-and-forth first quarter that featured four ties and one lead change. Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell has a game-high seven points, while forward Natasha Howard is closing in on her seventh double-double of the season with six points and seven rebounds after the first quarter. Indiana is out-rebounding Dallas 13-9, including five offensive rebounds, but the Wings have managed to get to the free throw line more. Dallas had nine free throw attempts in the first, compared to one for Indiana. Paige Bueckers leads the Wings with five points, while Myisha Hines-Allen added five points off the bench. Caitlin Clark injury update: Fever guard ruled out The Fever All-Star guard will not be available for Friday's matchup against the Wings due to a right groin injury that has kept her sidelined for six consecutive games.
