'F1' races to $140M global debut, sets box office record for Brad Pitt and Apple Original Films
Apple Original Films' F1, distributed by Warner Bros, debuted to a global opening of $140 million—$85 million from international markets and $55 million from a three-day domestic weekend.
This marks a new career best for Brad Pitt, surpassing the $112 million launch of World War Z. Strong audience response with an A CinemaScore and 92 per cent PostTrak rating supports continued momentum.
The film opened to $25 million on Friday alone, just shy of Pitt's top opening. Premium formats, including IMAX, accounted for 58 per cent of domestic earnings.
Notably, F1 outperformed previous racing-themed films, such as Ford v. Ferrari and Days of Thunder, at their openings.
In contrast, M3GAN 2.0 opened to $10.4 million across 3,112 theatres, a lower result than projected. The Friday debut stood at $4.5 million.
The sequel earned a B+ CinemaScore and 84 per cent PostTrak exit score, though early social media and critic reactions suggested weaker enthusiasm compared to the 2023 original.
Current weekend rankings place F1 at number one, followed by How to Train Your Dragon at number two with $19 million, Elio at $10.8 million, and M3GAN 2.0 at number four.
Other notable titles include 28 Years Later and Lilo & Stitch, with both continuing strong performance.

Brad Pitt's 'F1' cruises to top of N.America box office
LOS ANGELES: "F1: The Movie," starring Brad Pitt as a washed up Formula One driver who gets one last shot at redemption, sped to the top of the North American box office in its debut weekend with $55.6 million in ticket sales, industry estimates showed Sunday. "This is an outstanding opening for an original action sports drama," said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research, noting that both critics and audiences have loved the racing film from Apple and Warner Bros. "How to Train Your Dragon," Universal and DreamWorks Animation's live-action reboot of the popular 2010 film, slipped to second place with $19.4 million, according to Exhibitor Relations. Brad Pitt's F1 movie set for release in June 2025 The family-friendly film tells the story of a Viking named Hiccup (Mason Thames) who strikes up a friendship with Toothless the dragon. In third place was Disney/Pixar Animation's latest original film "Elio," at $10.7 million in the United States and Canada. "Elio" tells the story of a young boy who is mistaken by aliens as an intergalactic ambassador for Earth. The voice cast includes Oscar winner Zoe Saldana. "M3GAN 2.0," the sequel to Universal's 2022 film about a murderous doll, opened in a disappointing fourth place with $10.2 million. "The idea of a child-sized humanoid robot doll powered by AI generated a lot of interest the first time, but that interest has fallen apart," Gross said. In fifth place was Columbia Pictures' zombie sequel "28 Years Later," which took in $9.7 million. Critics' reviews and audience ratings have been strong for the Danny Boyle-directed threequel, which picks up -- as the title suggests -- more than a generation after the initial outbreak of the Rage Virus. Rounding out the top 10 were: "Lilo & Stitch" ($6.9 million) "Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning" ($4.2 million) "Materialists" ($3 million) "Ballerina" ($2.1 million) "Karate Kid: Legends" ($1 million)

Brad Pitt's Los Angeles home burglarised
Burglars broke into Brad Pitt's Los Angeles home on Thursday, ransacking the property and fleeing with stolen items while the Oscar-winning actor was travelling to promote his new racing thriller F1, US media reported. A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson told NBC News that a break-in took place at a residence in the Los Feliz neighbourhood around 10:30PM (0530 GMT), without officially confirming who owned the home. Police sources told NBC News and the Los Angeles Times that three suspects climbed over a front fence and broke in through the home's front window before ransacking the location and fleeing with some belongings. The value of the stolen items has not been disclosed. Pitt was not home at the time, as he has been on a global promotional tour for his new movie F1. The 61-year-old actor attended the film's premiere in London this week. The property was purchased by Pitt in 2023 for $5.5 million, according to Variety magazine. Pitt is among the most recent celebrities to have their Los Angeles homes burglarized. About $500,000 of jewellery was allegedly stolen from the home of French striker Olivier Giroud of MLS side Los Angeles FC in a burglary in February. That same month, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's residence was reportedly burglarized. On the work front, Pitt has been grabbing headlines with his Formula One film. Formula One is hoping the film cements the appeal of the Netflix docu-series Drive to Survive that has boosted Formula One's popularity and growth worldwide and particularly in the key US market. "I think there's this perception that Drive to Survive turned America onto F1 but I think there's just so many more people out there that don't know anything about it," said director Joseph Kosinski. "So there's a lot of potential still there."
