PCG Disappoints With Q1 Loss Of RM18 Million, Cites Challenging Market

BusinessToday20-05-2025
PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad announced its financial results for the first quarter (1Q 2025) in the financial year ending 31 December 2025, reporting a loss of RM18 million against a profit of RM668 million in the previous year's first quarter.
The Group sustained its operational performance with plant utilisation rate of 94% in 1Q 2025, comparable to 4Q 2024. Revenue grew 3% quarter-on-quarter to RM7.7 billion driven by higher average prices of urea, methanol, and polyethylene as well as improved sales performance in the specialties segment. Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortisation (EBITDA) rose 26% to RM892 million, supported by better spreads for urea, methanol, methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and olefin derivatives, coupled with reduced operational costs. However, Profit After Tax (PAT) declined to RM18 million from RM668 million in the previous quarter, largely due to unfavourable foreign exchange movement.
During the quarter, PCG said the Olefins & Derivatives (O&D) segment overcame utilities supply disruption that impacted several plants in Kertih, as well as reduced production at the Pengerang Petrochemicals Company Sdn. Bhd. (PPC) due to feedstock unavailability.
These external issues, combined with the limited uplift in product prices amid industry oversupply, resulted in the O&D segment recording a 4% decrease in quarterly revenue to RM3.5 billion. The segment reported Loss Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortisation (LBITDA) of RM43 million, primarily attributed to lower contributions from PPC, mainly due to lower plant utilisation rate and unrealised foreign exchange loss on revaluation of payables.
The Group's Fertilisers & Methanol (F&M) segment recorded an overall improvement in sales and earnings supported by stronger average product prices despite a slight decline in sales volume. Tight global supply and robust seasonal demand led to
increase in prices of approximately 13% and 5% for urea and methanol, respectively. The F&M segment recorded a higher quarterly revenue of RM2.5 billion while EBITDA rose 22% quarter-on-quarter to RM892 million, driven by improved product spreads.
Commenting on the 1Q 2025 performance, Mazuin Ismail, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of PCG, said 'Our resilience in navigating the challenging market landscape underscores the strength of our diversified portfolio. The improvement in EBITDA reflects our ongoing efforts on operational excellence with commendable plant utilisation rate achieved by our commodities business, despite setbacks in January 2025 that temporarily impacted operations at several plants in Kertih.'
On the implications of US tariffs to PCG, Mazuin said, 'We are closely monitoring these developments and assessing broader implications on the overall market dynamics.'

Kadamaian, Penampang need bigger funding: Ewon

Published on: Tuesday, July 08, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 08, 2025 By: Mohd Izham Bin Hashim Text Size: Ewon emphasised that additional state-level allocations are necessary to complement existing federal funds, particularly for villages located in steep terrain or on land previously degazetted from forest reserves. Kota Kinabalu: Kadamaian Assemblyman Datuk Ewon Benedick urged the Sabah Government to allocate substantial funding to Kadamaian and Penampang under the Sabah 2025 Supplementary Budget, citing ongoing needs in infrastructure development and native land ownership. Speaking during the debate on the 2025 Supplementary Supply Bill at the State Legislative Assembly sitting, Ewon stressed the importance of prioritising road and drainage improvements in both constituencies. He noted that residents in Kadamaian had consistently raised concerns about deteriorating road conditions that require urgent maintenance and upgrades. 'I hope the appointed contractors will carry out maintenance works more efficiently and on a regular basis in Kadamaian,' he said. In Penampang, Ewon highlighted the need for improved drainage systems to mitigate flood risks, calling for sustained maintenance efforts to protect residential and commercial areas. He also advocated for increased funding for the Pantas programme, which facilitates the surveying of native customary land. Ewon emphasised that additional state-level allocations are necessary to complement existing federal funds, particularly for villages located in steep terrain or on land previously degazetted from forest reserves. In addition, he proposed that a portion of the RM3.5 million allocated for sports complex maintenance be used to replace the running track at the Penampang Sports Complex, enhancing its functionality for community use. 'I am hopeful that this Supplementary Budget will help meet the development and administrative needs of the people,' he said. Ewon also commended the Sabah Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Haji Noor, for its fiscal governance, noting the receipt of an unqualified audit certificate from the Auditor General for the State Government's Financial Statement. He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen public financial management and address the priorities of his constituents. 'As the representative for Kadamaian and on behalf of my party, I will continue to back the government's efforts to uphold and enhance sound financial practices.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? According to the ministry's permanent secretary Datu Jafri Lias, the selection of APC recipients was made by the Human Resource Management Panel Committee (PPSMA). 'This committee is responsible for evaluating each staff member's performance based on established criteria, namely annual performance, discipline and integrity, as well as commitment and contribution,' he said in his speech at the MUT APC and Innovation Awards 2024, held at a resort in Santubong on Friday. The event was organised to recognise and appreciate staff members who have demonstrated outstanding performance throughout the year, while also serving to motivate the wider workforce to continuously enhance productivity and work quality. 'It also provides an opportunity for staff to engage in healthy competition in their pursuit of excellence,' Jafri added. This year marked the introduction of the 2024 Innovation Awards, established by the ministry as a form of recognition and appreciation to encourage a culture of innovation among its staff, with the aim of improving productivity and public service delivery. 'Each department within the ministry has developed its own innovation projects, particularly those related to work processes,' he explained. Jafri also shared several key achievements attained by the ministry throughout 2024, including the successful implementation of the Annual Plan 2024, which recorded an overall achievement rate of 98 per cent – an improvement from 94 per cent in 2023. He noted that the ministry's 2024 scorecard had met its stretch targets, reflecting strong performance across various areas. As of 2024, a total of 39 online services have been made available to the public, while 52 work procedures have received ISO 9001:2015 certification, demonstrating the ministry's commitment to quality and standardisation. Notably, there were no outstanding payments under the Treasury Instructions, AP58(a), with all claims for the year fully settled. The ministry also recorded a bill and claims payment performance of 99.5 per cent—the highest to date. In terms of revenue, the ministry collected RM677.62 million in 2024, achieving 107 per cent of the estimated target of RM634.90 million. The ministry's compliance under the Electronic Compliance Self-Assessment (eCSA) system reached 98.2 per cent, an increase from 96 per cent in the previous year. Furthermore, the ministry secured a 97 per cent score in the 2024 Sarawak Government Asset Management Compliance Index, the highest among agencies audited by the Sarawak State Financial Secretary's Office. Also present at the event were State Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi; Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy Berhad and Petros) Dato Ibrahim Baki, and Sarawak Energy Berhad chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili. appreciation julaihi narawi utility ministry

Chinese cruise ship to make Penang its home port

Holiday at sea: (From left) Tong, Cheong and Yeoh admiring a miniature model of the Piano Land cruise ship after the press conference in George Town. — ZHAFARAN NASIB/The Star GEORGE TOWN: Penang will get a tourism and economic boost when a Chinese cruise ship makes the state its home port starting late November – a first for a Chinese vessel. With a capacity of 1,760 passengers and 880 cabins, Piano Land will operate seven sailings between Nov 30 and Dec 13, offering several night cruises to Port Klang and Langkawi. The move is expected to generate more than RM1mil per sailing in direct economic impact, including average passenger spending of RM400 on shopping, dining, tours and transport. Additional gains are expected from passengers who extend their stay. It will also strengthen Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal's (SPCT) position as a regional hub, with further benefits from port fees, crew spending as well as support services such as aviation, hospitality and retail. Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the cruise homeporting would mark a milestone in the state's cruise tourism development. 'This marks the first time a Chinese cruise ship is homeporting in Penang. 'If the response is strong, we aim to extend the contract and grow the industry next year. 'With 12,320 seats available over seven sailings, our target is to sell 80% by year-end,' Yeoh said at a press conference following the signing of two Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) at SPCT. However, he added that the limited capacity at Penang International Airport remains a challenge in fully capitalising on the potential influx of cruise passengers. Meanwhile, the MOUs include an agreement between Hwajing Travel and Tours and SPCT to promote the terminal as a dedicated cruise homeport from 2025 to 2027. Another is between Hwajing and Astro Ocean Cruise, which owns the cruise ship, to jointly market cruise packages. Present at the signing were PPC general manager Datuk Dr V. Vijayaindiaran, Penang Port Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Sasedharan Vasudevan, Hwajing managing director Kenny Cheong and Astro Ocean Cruise vice-president Jian-Feng Tong.
