Hinjewadi part of her constituency, her ‘suggestion' accepted, but MP Sule not invited for the crucial meeting

Indian Express10-07-2025
THOUGH HINJEWADI is part of her Baramati Lok Sabha constituency, MP and NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule was not invited for the crucial meeting convened by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss problem besetting the IT hub in Mumbai on Thursday. Her associates, however, said the government has accepted Sule's suggestion to appoint a single nodal officer to coordinate the functioning of various civic, traffic and district authorities.
Hinjewadi, which falls in Sule's constituency, also saw a massive power outage that affected thousands of residents on Sunday. 'I have not been invited for the meeting nor was I informed about it,' Sule told The Indian Express on Thursday, adding, 'I will speak about this later in detail.'
Fadnavis had called the meeting of Pune officials and stakeholders at 2 pm in Vidhan Bhavan following public uproar. Residents of Hinjewadi have also started an online campaign seeking merger of the IT hub with PCMC.
Sule's associates, however, said the idea mooted by the MP to appoint a nodal officer has been accepted the government.
Following the mega power outage, Sule had on Monday in a letter urged Fadnavis to appoint a nodal officer to resolve civic issues until an independent authority is appointed for the area. Sule had suggested either formation of a Special City Development Authority or an Industrial Urban Administrative Authority. The CM on Thursday announced the setting up of a Single Point Authority headed by Pune divisional commissioner. 'Despite the fact that Hinjewadi was part of the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency, the government does not have the courtesy to invite the local MP to discuss the issues affecting the IT hub. It was Supriya Sule who had written a letter to the CM and had tweeted urging him to hold an urgent meeting to discuss Hinjewadi's problems,' her associates said.
Mahesh Tapase, spokesperson of the Nationalist Congress Party (SP), said the current government has often insulted MPs and MLAs of Opposition parties. 'When issues of public interest come and especially when the issues related to a constituency are represented by an MLA or MP, it is the duty of the government to invite them for any such meeting,' he said.
'The government cannot take unilateral decisions without consulting local representatives. This is against the principles of our Constitution. But this government has the habit of bypassing the Constitution. We strongly condemn the government attitude,' Tapase added.
BJP MLA Shankar Jagtap, who was present at the meeting, said, 'No MP was invited for the meeting…Only three MLAs were present. Even Pune MP was not invited.'
Heavy rain in recent days led to waterlogging in several key roads across the Hinjewadi area, resulting in huge traffic snarls. This irked IT professionals and residents who have launched a campaign to get their problems redressed by the state government.
Hinjewadi is just outside the jurisdiction of the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporations. The Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi is under the control of the MIDC, while the residential area is governed by the PMRDA. This means that residents are often compelled to follow up on grievances with multiple agencies, resulting in considerable loss of time and mental distress, Sule had told Fadnavis in the letter.

He described this as a welcome initiative to enhance commuters safety and reduce incidents related to overcrowding."The automatic doors prevent passengers from hanging on footboards or boarding moving trains which is a major cause of fatal accidents," Vaishnaw said. "These doors remain closed while the train is in motion and open only at stations when the train is stationary, thereby significantly reducing the risk of falls."He further added that increasing the frequency of train services, including suburban train services, is an ongoing process for Indian Railways, subject to operational feasibility, traffic justification, and availability of resources.

Left parties hold rally in Kolkata against harassment of Bengalis in BJP-ruled state

Kolkata: Left parties in West Bengal, led by CPI(M), on Wednesday, took out a protest march in Kolkata to condemn the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled states. However, from the same rally, the Left leaders accused West Bengal Chief Minister of dichotomy, which had prompted her to exploit the issue to suit her political agenda. The rally was led by the CPI(M) politburo member and the party's state secretary in West Bengal, Md. Salim. The rally began from the base of the Lenin Statue in the Esplanade area in central Kolkata and ended at Ramlila Park near Moulali, also in central Kolkata. Addressing party workers who took part in the protest march, Salim alleged that the BJP was targeting the Bengali-speaking people as part of its divisive politics. "Elections in Bihar are scheduled soon. Next year, Assembly polls will be held in West Bengal as well. Across the country, Bengalis are being targeted. We have no words to condemn such harassment and attack as it is being done as part of the party's divisive politics," said Salim. He also accused different BJP-ruled state governments of allegedly harassing the Bengali-speaking people after branding them as illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators first. "At the same time, an attempt is going on to brand them as doubtful voters in the pretext of conducting a special revision of the voters' list by the Election Commission of India," Salim said. According to him, people coming from a weaker economic background, such as migrant labourers, are suffering the most in this process. 'The Constitution allows Indian citizens to travel, work, and live across the country. This is internal migration, and the central government must provide them with social security," said Salim. He also slammed Mamata Banerjee for turning the plight of the Bengali-speaking into a poll issue, given the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election. "She is politicising the matter because the election is just around the corner. Mamata Banerjee also wants to divide the people by instilling a sense of fear among them. If people get divided, then both Mamata Banerjee and the BJP would benefit from it," he said.
