Rejected by in-laws, supported by 'Jeevika': Begusarai's Neelu turns adversity into success
The latest instance of this change is Bihar's Begusarai district, where Jeevika Yojana is changing the lives of women by enabling them to overcome adversities and become self-dependent.
Pachamba, a locality about 5 km away from Begusarai, has become a big centre of empowerment of the 'Jeevika Didi' yojana, with Neelu Kumari emerging as the face of this success.
However, Neelu's journey was not easy. She was beset with one of the biggest challenges after her marriage, and this is what laid the foundation for her inspirational journey.
Her husband was an alcoholic, and her in-laws kept harassing her, following which she returned to her maternal home. But now, with Jeevika's sewing house, she has not only become self-reliant but has moved up the ladder of success.
Neelu Kumari told IANS that she got married to Chandan Kumar Sharma, a resident of Asha toll village in Bhagalpur district, in 2010, and the groom's side duped their family by telling lies.
'At the time of marriage, Chandan Sharma's family members told me that the groom works in a tower installation company. But, after marriage, I got to know that he didn't work and also he was an alcohol addict,' she said.
She was not only beaten and abused by her husband but also tortured by the in-laws for not bearing a son after marriage. Her in-laws also did not send her two daughters to school for studies, and neither did they give them proper food.
Troubled by her in-laws, Neelu chose a different path and joined 'Muskaan Jeevika'.
Today, Neelu is an active member of the Jeevika programme and is doing sewing and embroidery work, thereby shaping the future of her daughters.
Neelu Kumari said that before joining Jeevika, she had to face financial difficulties, but today she is standing on her own feet.
Rather, she is not alone, the lives of hundreds of women like Neelu have completely changed after joining Jeevika.
Notably, Jeevika is a community-based organisation in Bihar, having around 10 lakh women self-help groups, thereby uniting approximately 1.24 crore women for Swachhata Hi Seva in Bihar. With women joining hands to reach out to villages for awareness generation and undertaking mass cleanliness activities, this marks a true reflection of 'Nari Shakti'.

Target to plant 5 cr saplings in current fiscal: CM
Patna: CM Nitish Kumar on Monday inaugurated the state-level 'Van Mahotsav-2025', organised by the department of environment, forest and climate change (DoEFCC) by planting a mango sapling at his official residence on 1, Anne Marg premises. On this occasion, the CM appealed to people to contribute to this campaign by planting saplings on their premises and surroundings. "A target has been set to plant 5 crore saplings in the financial year 2025-26 and full preparations for this plantation campaign have been completed. Over the next three months, large-scale sapling plantations will be conducted throughout the state," he said. "The initiative involves saplings planting by the DoEFCC, rural development department, Jeevika groups, horticulture department, various organisations, departments, non-governmental organisations, and various social clubs," a communique issued by the chief minister's office (CMO) said. With the forward-thinking vision of the CM and the goal of increasing green cover, the state govt launched 'Hariyali Mission' in 2012, leading to large-scale sapling plantation across the state in mission mode. "As a result, the state's green cover reached 15.05%. The target is to increase the green cover to 17% by 2028," the CMO said. Initiated by Nitish, the "Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan" began in 2019 across the state. "This campaign aims to raise public awareness about tree planting, water conservation, and environmental protection, encouraging their participation in sapling planting and increasing farmers' income through agroforestry. Additionally, fruit-bearing plants are being provided free of charge to the women of self-help groups and residents of villages near forests," the CMO said. Reacting to the preliminary findings by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) into the fatal crash of Air India flight AI 171 — a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that went down shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12, Martin, who is CEO of Martin Consulting, an aviation safety firm in Asia, said that for a pilot, two most critical phases of flight are the take off and landing. 'During this, all attention is on flight instruments and hand flying the aircraft to about (usually) 2000 feet then engaging the autopilot. Attention is on continuing flight and flight controls, never on the throttle quadrant, since thrust is set to MAX TAKE OFF THRUST,' he told IANS. According to the AAIB preliminary report, both fuel control switches supplying fuel to the engines of Air India flight 171 were turned off in quick succession, shutting down both the engines. One of the pilots can be heard on the cockpit voice recorder, asking the other why he cut off the fuel, to which the other pilot responded by saying that 'he did not', the report mentioned. Martin said that the report 'will have a global ramification on all 787 operators'.
