Parents demand action on Government school teacher near Sirumugai in Coimbatore district over misconduct

The Hindu7 hours ago
An English teacher at the Government High School in Iluppupalayam village near Sirumugai in Coimbatore district is facing allegations of reporting to work under the influence of alcohol and failing to conduct classes.
According to headmaster C. Rajendran, the teacher, Periyasamy, who handles classes for Standards VI to IX, had been reporting to school in an inebriated state and arguing with students, other staff. Following complaints, he was deputed to another school for two months, but was transferred back in the current academic year.
'He often picks fights and neglects his classes. When I questioned him, he tried to assault me and used abusive language. Though he assured officials he would change, his behaviour has worsened since returning and shows no regard for accountability,' Mr. Rajendran told The Hindu.
School Management Committee president B. Abirami said they had earlier complained to the headmaster. 'Students say he does not teach, and tells them to rely on guidebooks. My child, who is in Class VIII, was beaten once without reason and is discouraged from participating in any activities,' she said.
'We have asked the headmaster to remove him. If nothing is done, we will take the issue to the District Collector,' she added.
Mr. Rajendran said the matter had been brought to the attention of Chief Educational Officer R. Balamurali, who has assured them that action will be taken on Monday.

BU tightens campus security

Berhampur: Authorities at Berhampur University have taken strict measures to ensure the safety of girl students on campus after an incident at a govt college in Balasore, where a 20-year-old student sustained critical injuries after setting herself ablaze on Saturday following alleged sexual harassment by a teacher. Geetanjali Dash, vice-chancellor of Berhampur University, said campus security had been strengthened by deploying an adequate number of security guards. "In the coming day, we will take measures to randomly check students' identity cards on campus to filter the entry of outsiders." She added that action was taken against teachers from the Odia, English, and History departments in the last two and a half years after complaints were received from girl students and research scholars."We have taken prompt action against the teachers as soon as complaints were received and have adopted a zero-tolerance policy," she said. Dash added, "Another complaint was received against an assistant teacher engaged on a contractual basis. An inquiry is underway, and the teacher will be disengaged if the complaint is found to be true."

According to his LinkedIn profile, Paramanand Toppaunwar attended EM Normandie Business School in France, where he pursued an MBA in International Business, Trade and Commerce from January to March 2024. The second-year IIM student of the 2024-2026 batch has written that he is fluent in English, Hindi, Kannada, and Telugu and has completed multiple internships, including with an FMCG company known for soft drinks and a multinational agri-business firm. 'When Virat said that a 1% chance is good enough, I felt it. I am honored to have been offered admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. I am eager to learn from the esteemed faculty and collaborate with the best minds in the country. Gratitude to everyone who has supported me in this journey,' he wrote on LinkedIn. On Saturday, Paramanand Toppaunwar's mother expressed shock at the alleged rape. 'We just want to meet my son. He never had any history of mental illness, we did not know that he was taking any counselling,' she told reporters at a court which remanded him in police custody till July 19. The police arrested Paramanand Toppaunwar on Saturday under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections related to rape and seized his clothes and phone for forensic examination. The woman alleged that Parmanand Toppaunwar called her to the campus in Joka on Friday on the pretext of seeking counselling and raped her after spiking her food and drink and making her unconscious.
