Local inhabitant Marawi Al-Sudairi in an interview with SPA noted that the fire symbolizes generosity and togetherness, and an integral part of the Northern Borders' culture.
Another local, Karim Al-Dhaidi, revealed that Ramadan gatherings are open to everyone, and contributes to strengthening social ties. He also added that they connect people with their past.
In this context, Jazaa Marji, board chairman of the Retirees Association in the Northern Borders region, said that the Ramadan fire has always been a part of the local heritage.

Marji also noted that the fasting month is the perfect time to bring such traditions into life, explaining that they crystalize the spirit of love, communication, as well as the reinforcement of social values between generations.
Currently, the Ramadan fire remains a significant tradition at various homes in the Northern Borders region as residents revive it during Ramadan nights.

RIYADH: Once a staple of ancient civilizations, green walls — also known as living walls — are making a comeback as a modern solution to some of the planet's most pressing urban challenges. Dating back thousands of years, they once served both aesthetic and practical functions, providing shade, cooling and even food. The concept received a 20th-century reboot when French botanist Patrick Blanc introduced a hydroponic method of vertical gardening that eliminated the need for soil. His innovation inspired a new wave of architects and designers to reimagine how plants could be integrated into buildings, inside and out. In the decades that followed, green wall systems evolved with smarter materials and sustainable technologies. No longer just decorative features, they have become powerful tools in the fight against climate change — regulating temperatures, reducing noise, filtering air pollutants and even producing food in urban areas. 'Green walls are advanced vegetated systems installed on vertical surfaces to deliver functional environmental benefits,' Faisal Al-Fadl, an award-winning architect, urban planner and global sustainability advocate, told Arab News. 'These systems combine engineering, water management, plant science and materials innovation, integrating a modular or structural frame, a growing substrate or hydroponic base, smart irrigation and drainage systems, and a curated selection of locally adapted plant species.' Exposure to greenery can help reduce stress and promote mental well-being. Green walls can act as sound barriers, lowering indoor and outdoor noise pollution. Greenery can boost mood and productivity in workspaces and educational settings. Al-Fadl is the secretary-general of the Saudi Green Building Forum, a nongovernmental organization with consultative status at the UN. He represents Saudi Arabia on the global stage, advocating for green innovation and climate resilience. With more than two decades of experience, he has played a key role in localizing sustainability practices across architecture, policy, and engineering. He also founded the Saaf certification system. For Al-Fadl, green walls offer far more than visual appeal. 'They filter air pollutants and improve microclimates, provide ecological value and usable green space in dense cities, encourage innovation in construction materials and urban design, as well as demonstrate commitment to sustainable resource cycles, especially water,' he said. Yet the Kingdom's arid climate and water scarcity present real challenges to green wall adoption. Al-Fadl argues that these very conditions make the technology even more relevant — not less. 'In Saudi Arabia's hyper-arid environment, green walls present an integrated solution to multiple urban sustainability challenges,' he said. 'Their significance lies in their ability to deliver transformational change across five key UN Sustainability Development Goals prioritized by Saaf.' As examples, he points to SDG 6 — clean water and sanitation — highlighting how green walls can use recycled greywater or HVAC condensate, easing the burden on fresh water supplies. For SDG 7 — clean and affordable energy — living walls can insulate buildings and reduce cooling demand, helping to cut energy use and lower carbon emissions. Under SDG 9 — industry, innovation, and infrastructure — Al-Fadl said green walls 'promote local green innovation in architecture, landscaping, and construction technologies, including the use of recyclable materials and modular components.' 'In essence, green walls enable cities to move from consumption to regeneration,' he added. But that does not mean simply copying models from other countries: 'The climate of Saudi Arabia demands context-specific design, not replication,' said Al-Fadl. With the right technical adaptations, he believes green walls can flourish even in the Kingdom's harshest environments. They are not a luxury or a trend, he stressed. Traditional weapon fires up celebrations in Asir
RIYADH: In Al-Namas, a governorate in the Asir region known for its historic mud and wooden palaces, tradition lives on through the centuries-old craft of making 'Al-Maqmaa,' a heritage weapon once used for defense and now central to local celebrations. Crafting Al-Maqmaa begins with selecting high-quality wood for the body and forging an iron barrel, Saudi Press Agency reported. Key components include the safha, a compartment for storing gunpowder, and the darrab, used to compact it. The final stage is decoration, with artisans adorning the piece in brass, silver, and intricate engravings. Fahd Al-Shehri continues a legacy inherited from his father, who opened one of the first Al-Maqmaa repair shops in Al-Namas. His father modernized the craft using advanced tools while preserving its authenticity. Today, Fahd adapts the weapon for a younger generation, producing lighter, more compact versions. In Asir, no celebration is complete without Al-Maqmaa and the zahab, a cross-body leather belt studded with metal and used to carry gunpowder cartridges for ceremonial firing. The production of traditional black powder is part of this heritage. It involves mixing salt from specific soils, natural sulfur, and charcoal made from slow-burning branches. The compound once was used not only in weapons but also in blasting rocks and excavating wells. Researcher Saleh Abu Arad noted in his work that Al-Maqmaa remains a powerful symbol of Asir's identity, passed down through generations as a proud expression of the region's culture.

Saudi Arabia Expands Gaza Relief Effort with 7 New Aid Trucks
Saudi Arabia has sent new aid trucks to the Gaza Strip, as part of the Kingdom's ongoing relief campaign to support the Palestinian people in Gaza. On Wednesday, seven new Saudi aid trucks crossed the Rafah border crossing en route to Gaza, carrying food supplies provided by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). In an expanded relief effort, KSrelief has operated humanitarian air and sea bridges to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza. So far, 58 aircraft and 8 ships, carrying a total of 7,188 tons of food, medical and shelter supplies, have been dispatched. Moreover, 20 ambulances have been handed over to the Palestine Red Crescent Society. Additionally, KSrelief signed several agreements with international organizations to fund relief projects for the Palestinian people in Gaza worth over $90 million. Saudi Arabia has also launched an airdrop initiative, through KSrelief and in collaboration with Jordan, to deliver food aid to impacted civilians in Gaza, in an effort to overcome restrictions caused by the closure of border crossings. The ongoing war in Gaza has caused a dire humanitarian catastrophe and a severe starvation crisis, making relief efforts a vital lifeline for families, as they face worsening life conditions due to the prolonged conflict and restricted access to essential supplies. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, the war's death toll has exceeded 60,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children.
