By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: Firefighters working hard to extricate the victims from the vehicles - Bomba pic SANDAKAN: A man was killed while another was seriously injured in an accident involving a four-wheel-drive and a lorry near Ladang Sakilan, Batu 25, on Monday. The Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 8.25pm and arrived at the scene, located some 34km from the Sandakan station, at 9.02pm with seven personnel, said Acting Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station Chief Chauslim Sunsubin. Also at the scene were seven police and three medical personnel. 'Two victims were found at the scene. One suffered serious head injuries while the other was confirmed dead by Health Ministry officials,' he said. Firefighters worked to extricate the victims before handing them over to the Health Ministry for further action. Kota Kinabalu: A 37-year-old accountant clerk claimed trial to three counts of committing criminal breach of trust involving a sum of RM103,351.36. Brandon Ng Jia Lie made the plea after the charges were read before three Sessions Court Judges, Hurman Hussain, Elsie Primus and Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim, Friday. Advertisement On the first count, Ng is accused of breaching the trust given to him as an accountant clerk by depositing two cheques amounting to RM6,462.50 belonged to Syarikat Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd, into his bank account for his own use. The alleged incident took place between Nov 16, 2021 and Dec 31, 2021 at the Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Berhad, here. On the second count, he allegedly committed criminal breach of trust by depositing another eight cheques amounting to RM64,169.26 belonged to Syarikat Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd, into his bank account for his own use, between Feb 29, 2022 and Dec 29, 2022 at the same place. On the third count, Ng is accused of committing the offence by depositing five cheques amounting to RM32,719.60 belonged to Syarikat Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd, into his bank account for his own use at the same place between Feb 3, 2023 and July 27, 2023. The offence, under Section 408 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of between one and 14 years, and whipping, and liable to fine, on conviction. The court set Aug 12, this year, and released on bail of RM5,000 in two local sureties for each charge. Ng was also ordered to report to the nearest police station every first and third Friday of the month and his passport, if any, to be impounded by the court until the disposal of his case. Earlier, the prosecution objected to bail Ng on the grounds that he has three charges against him but if the court were to grant bail, there were several conditions to be imposed on him. Ng, who was not represented, asked for bail to be given to him saying that it was his first court case and if he was denied bail, there's no one else to financially provide for his family since his wife is a full-time housewife. He also claimed that he has no authority to sign or approve any cheque. Ng requested for the amount of bail to be between RM2,000 and RM3,000, adding that he would apply for the legal service from the National Legal Aid Foundation. Kota Kinabalu: A 33-year-old beauty salon owner was fined RM1,400 or one month's jail by the Magistrate's Court here, Friday, for slapping her cousin. Zurinah pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to voluntarily causing hurt to one Siti Hazlinda, 30, on June 12, at 11.40am at a nail treatment outlet on the second floor of Centre Point shopping mall, here. Advertisement Zurinah was convicted under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to one year or fine of up to RM2,000 or both on conviction. The facts of the case presented by the prosecution stated that the incident took place while the victim was at work in the said shopping mall when her cousin, Zurinah, suddenly confronted and slapped her once on the left cheek. Zurinah accused the victim of being the reason behind a verbal altercation between Zurinah and her father. The victim's employer, who witnessed the incident, intervened and broke up the confrontation before advising the victim to leave to avoid further escalation. The victim later lodged a police report. Duty counsel Lim Ming Zoong, representing Zurinah, requested for a lenient sentence while the prosecution applied for an adequate sentence. In another case, a 26-year-old Filipino was sentenced to seven months' jail for disposing of a stolen smartphone. Sabri Anuar admitted to committing the offence by selling the stolen Xiomi 11T phone belonging to one Khalid Hussien to Azrien Norsalim on June 15, this year, at 10pm, in Kg Numbak here. The charge, under Section 414 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine, or both, on conviction. Sabri was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest and ordered be referred to the Immigration Department thereafter.
