Union Minister L Murugan launches several healthcare initiatives at ESIC Medical College in Chennai
The Union Minister reaffirmed the Centre's focus on strengthening healthcare infrastructure across the country and lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for several healthcare schemes.
After launching the healthcare initiatives, L Murugan said, 'I am pleased to participate in this event and launch several healthcare initiatives dedicated to the welfare of the people. After witnessing the facilities at the college, I could sense the care and commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards the well-being of workers.'
Highlighting the Centre's achievements over the past 11 years, the Minister said, 'Medical colleges and faculty have significantly increased across India. The number of medical seats has risen and will continue to expand in the coming years.'
He also said that the government was not only focusing on workers but was also extending support to persons with disabilities.
'The Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendras (Prime Minister's Medical Stores) have been set up to ensure affordable access to quality medicines for all. Our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, is always concerned about the nation's health. That's why he implemented the Arogya Mandir scheme, Ayushman Bharat, and Jan Aushadhi Kendras,' he said.
'Apart from that, the medical college infrastructure has also increased. 75,000 new MBBS seats have been added. Every district now has a medical college, and the number of medical seats is rising... Before 2014, there were only 7 AIIMS, but in the last 11 years, 15 new AIIMS have been established in the country,' he added.
Murugan stressed the importance of preventive healthcare and urged citizens to reduce daily oil consumption by at least 10 per cent to lead healthier lives.
'India's medical infrastructure is growing rapidly, and many more development projects are in the pipeline. Every District should have a medical college,' he stated.
Earlier on Sunday, Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta distributed appointment letters to 1400 nurses.
CM Gupta said that the government is making efforts to tackle the shortage of medical staff and medicines. Rekha Gupta told the reporters, 'It is a matter of great joy that, after many years in the history of the Delhi government, appointment letters for permanent nursing staff have been distributed by the government. F
For years, due to a shortage of staff, Delhi's hospitals have been running in a disorganised manner. The government has made significant efforts within its tenure to fill these vacancies, and today, approximately 1,400 nurses have been given appointment letters.'Delhi CM further congratulated the health department and the Health Ministry. Resolve pending issues: RTC union leaders
Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh Public Transport Department (APPDC) Employees Union submitted a representation to the chairman of the APSRTC Konakalla Narayana on Monday urging the latter to resolve the pending issues of the employees of the APSRTC. The Union leaders met the chairman at the RTC House and narrated their problems. The Employees Union state president P Damodara Rao, general secretary GV Narasaiah and others met the chairman. The Union leaders demanded that medical facilities to RTC (PTD) employees should be provided through referral hospitals, purchase and operation of electric buses should be done strictly under APSRTC management and staff, reinstatement of alternative employment under the old policy for medically unfit employees and assurance should be given for the job security of outsourced employees. The Union leaders submitted the representation in view of the APSRTC Board meeting to be held on Tuesday. They also submitted representations to Zonal Chairmen on Monday, seeking immediate attention to these matters. The union highlighted that the RTC staff were facing many critical issues after the APSRTC merger with the government. They said around 350 RTC employees die every year due to health related issues and non-availability of good treatment and medical care. The EU leaders insisted on reinstating referral hospital-based treatment to the RTC staff. They also made other demands such as Implementation of compassionate appointments which are pending since the pre-merger period, disbursement of pending SRBS/SBT dues, Regularisation of remaining contract employees, clearance of 24 months' arrears under the 11th PRC and pending DA payments, finalisation of pending employee promotions overdue for six years and issuance of a recruitment notification to fill 10,000 vacancies and procurement of 3,000 new buses. EU leaders MDA Siddique (treasurer) stated that APSRTC Chairman Konakalla Narayana assured them that efforts would be made to discuss and resolve these issues during the Board meeting to be held on Tuesday.

JNUSU president hospitalised amid ongoing hunger strike over PhD admissions, hostel issues
ANI 08 Jul 2025, 02:33 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], July 8 (ANI): Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) president Nitish Kumar was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital on Monday night after he complained of severe chest pain. Kumar, along with several students, has been on an indefinite hunger strike for over a week, demanding reversal of recent policy decisions related to PhD admissions and hostel accommodations. In a statement, the JNUSU said, 'We demand immediate attention to his health and the just demands of the students. The administration's silence in the face of a serious health emergency is unacceptable.' The union said Kumar had gone without food for several days as part of the protest, and his condition deteriorated rapidly. The indefinite hunger strike began on June 26, with students demanding the reinstatement of JNU's in-house entrance exam (JNUEE) for PhD admissions instead of relying solely on the UGC-NET and CUET mechanisms. Students have also demanded the withdrawal of eviction notices issued to PhD scholars and the assurance of hostel accommodation until the completion of thesis submission. While the university has stated that financial and logistical constraints make it difficult to hold separate entrance exams for all departments, it has agreed to conduct JNUEE only for Cinema Studies and Korean Studies. Admissions to other PhD programmes will be based on national eligibility tests. The administration has also announced a second PhD admission cycle in December and agreed to extend hostel stay for scholars in the final stages of submission. Despite these steps, the JNUSU has alleged that the administration remains unresponsive to the broader set of student concerns. Several students participating in the protest have reported health complications.
