Ongoing Btg Rambungan bridge project to signal end of Kuching's reliance on ferry service

KUCHING (June 10): Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Ports Development Sarawak Datuk Aidel Lariwoo looks forward to seeing Kuching Division no longer relying on ferry crossings once the Batang Rambungan Bridge has reached completion.
According to the Sadong Jaya assemblyman, the project is progressing well and is currently ahead of schedule, having currently achieved 5.84 per cent in progress rate – up from 3.76 per cent recorded last month.
'This means it is ahead by 2.08 per cent.
'We hope the contractor would maintain this momentum so that the project could be completed faster than scheduled,' he told reporters when met during his working visit to the bridge construction site yesterday.
The Batang Rambungan Bridge is regarded as among the most critical components along the coastal road network spanning from Sampadi to Lundu and once it reaches completion, it will replace the existing ferry service – the last remaining ferry crossing in Kuching Division.
Adding on, Aidil said the previous contractor had been replaced and the project was re-tendered via an open process, leading to a slight increase in cost due to updated market rates.
'The new contract is valued at RM82 million, (with works spanning) over a 30-month duration, but I am confident that the project could be completed earlier, similar to the Batang Marudi Bridge, which was finished nine months ahead of schedule.
'Efforts are being made to push the contractor to complete key components of the bridge, particularly the two main towers, ahead of the July deadline next year.
'Once those are completed, the remaining works should become much easier,' he said.
The state deputy minister also revealed that there had been a noticeable increase in manpower and machinery on site, with the arrival of new tower cranes.
'This shows the contractor's strong commitment.'
Aidel also shared with the reporters that upon the bridge's completion, the ferry service would be terminated automatically.
However, he added: 'While ferries retired from other locations have been redeployed (to other sites) such as to Batang Paloh and Batang Igan, no decision has been made yet regarding the ferry currently operating at Batang Rambungan.'
Moreover, Aidil said in line with the bridge development, plans were underway to upgrade the connecting roads, including a future two-lane stretch from the end of the Federal Authority Centre (FAC) road to the upcoming i-CATS University College campus in Trombol.
He pointed out: 'Although the upgrade from the FAC road to the bridge has not started, it will likely follow once the bridge is completed, as part of ongoing efforts to improve the standards of the coastal roads across Sarawak.
'This is one of the last remaining major infrastructure projects in Kuching under the coastal road network.
'With the support of agencies like JKR (Public Works Department), the Resident's Office, and District Office, we are committed to seeing it reach completion smoothly.' aidel lariwoo Batang Rambungan Bridge development project infrastructure

Evergreen Cahaya in share subscription deal with DPK private equity to raise RM40mil

KUALA LUMPUR: Evergreen Cahaya Holdings Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Evergreen Max Cash Capital Bhd , has entered into a subscription agreement with DPK Private Equity Sdn Bhd to raise RM40 million. In a Bursa Malaysia filing, Evergreen Max Cash said that under the deal, DPK Private Equity will subscribe to 40 million Islamic Redeemable Convertible Preference Shares (RCPS-i) at RM1 per share. It said the proceeds raised will be utilised as cash capital to fund the operations of Ar-Rahnu Tawarruq services of Evergreen Cahaya and its identified subsidiaries. "In particular, the gross proceeds raised will be channelled towards the disbursement of pawn loans through the Ar-Rahnu Tawarruq services outlets of the Evergreen Cahaya group as part of its ongoing efforts to expand and scale its Islamic pawnbroking operations in line with growing demand for Islamic pawn loans. "Pending the utilisation of proceeds arising from the issuance of RCPS-i for the above purpose, the proceeds would be placed in Shariah-approved investments in accordance with the terms of the subscription agreement,' it said. Furthermore, Evergreen Max Cash said the issuance of RCPS-i allowed it to maintain its equity interest in Evergreen Cahaya while managing the dilutive impacts, as the issuance of new ordinary shares in Evergreen Cahaya would have resulted in a direct dilution of its shareholdings. "The dilution impact to Evergreen Max Cash's shareholding in Evergreen Cahaya will be on a progressive basis as and when the RCPS-i are converted into new ordinary shares in Evergreen Cahaya in accordance with the terms of the subscription agreement,' it said. - Bernama

CGS eyes regional growth in Islamic finance, eyes MENA expansion

KUALA LUMPUR: CGS International Securities Malaysia Sdn Bhd (CGS MY) is broadening its Islamic finance presence across the region, targeting markets such as Singapore, Indonesia, and eventually the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), with Dubai in its sights. According to head of Shariah services Rushdan Nadzir, navigating regulatory hurdles remains a challenge due to differing interpretations of Islamic finance, particularly in jurisdictions like Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, where structures like Tawarruq face tighter scrutiny. Nonetheless, CGS MY is pushing ahead with its expansion plans, with a strong focus on accelerating its Islamic finance growth in Indonesia. "We see from the movements during the pandemic and post-pandemic as well, and I guess the overall awareness around these Shariah products is needed. We want to provide access to ethical, high-yield investments that are scalable and rooted in compliance. Whether you are investing RM10 or RM100,000, there should be no trade-off between faith, function, and return," said Rushdan. CGS MY recently launched its first Islamic structured investment products—the Islamic equity-linked investment notes (Elin-i) and Islamic autocallable equity structured investment notes (Aesin-i)—designed for high-net-worth and institutional investors. Rushdan said the launch marked a strategic milestone in positioning Malaysia as a regional hub for Islamic financial innovation. "These structured products are a high-risk, high-return investment, with indicative returns ranging from potentially 8 to 15 per cent per annum. "As outlined in Bank Negara Malaysia's Financial Sector Blueprint 2022 to 2026, the launch supports CGS's position as a leading Islamic finance hub in Asean," he said, adding that these high-risk, high-return products offer potential annual returns of 8–15 per cent. Rushdan said that Malaysia's Islamic capital market is now valued at over RM2.6 trillion, accounting for 63 per cent of the total capital market, while the country also holds 36 per cent of the global sukuk market share as of end-2024. The firm noted that Shariah-compliant stocks have historically outperformed, particularly in Malaysia. "Although Shariah-compliant assets currently account for roughly 20 per cent of CGS MY's business, the segment is expanding rapidly. "CGS's Islamic share margin financing grew from zero to over RM100 million in just two years, and demand is also growing in futures, equity trading, and Islamic wealth management," he said. According to him, institutional clients, particularly fund managers with Islamic mandates, are increasingly conducting trades through Shariah-compliant brokers.
