Code of practice to help companies with AI rules may come end 2025, EU says
BRUSSELS :Key guidance to help thousands of companies comply with the European Union's landmark artificial intelligence rules may come at the end of the year, the European Commission said on Thursday, marking a six-month delay. "On the AI Act's GPAI rules, the European AI Board is discussing the timing to implement the Code of Practice, with the end of 2025 being considered," a Commission spokesperson said. GPAI refers to large language models such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and similar models launched by Google and Mistral. The Commission had originally set May 2 as the deadline for the introduction of the Code of Practice.

We, Russian political prisoners, appeal to all international leaders who care about the suffering of people for their beliefs. There are at least 10,000 of us - Russian political prisoners and Ukrainian civilian hostages. We are all punished for one thing - for taking a civic stance. The concepts of justice and fairness are absent in Russia today; anyone who dares to think critically can end up behind bars. Repressive legislation aimed at eliminating any dissent has been consistently tightened since 2012. From 2018 to 2022, at least 50 repressive laws were adopted, and since February 24, 2022 - over 60 more. There are no acquittals in politically motivated cases in Russia. The cruelty of punishment is growing; no one is surprised by 10-, 15-, and 20-year prison terms. The State Duma (parliament) regularly demands the return of the death penalty. The chances of a fair hearing of such cases by Russian courts were small before, but they finally disappeared after Russia refused to comply with the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights in 2022. As a result, the health and lives of prisoners are at risk, torture and pressure against them are most often not investigated or punished. Political prisoners are, more often than others, held in harsher conditions and deprived of the opportunity for parole and legal relaxation of the detention regime. The practice of initiating additional criminal cases based on denunciations by other convicts has become common. But despite all this, we have not lost our voices, we have not sunk into oblivion. We have maintained our civic position, which we consider important to state: * We call on both sides of the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine to immediately conduct an exchange of prisoners of war and civilians according to the formula "all for all", including Ukrainian civilian hostages. * We call for the immediate and unconditional release of sick political prisoners who are dying in Russian prisons. * We are counting on politicians from different countries to create conditions for the release of all those persecuted in Russia for political reasons. * We urge the media of different countries not to remain silent and to cover the activities of Russian citizens who continue to risk their lives in the struggle for freedom and democracy. * We ask politicians from democratic countries to support the struggle of Russians and to adopt resolutions on behalf of Parliaments, political associations and parties. Only together can we bring closer the time of freedom and peace. China, EU should not 'seek confrontation': Foreign minister Wang
BRUSSELS: China's top diplomat warned his EU counterpart against "confrontation", his foreign ministry said on Thursday (Jul 3), after she urged Beijing to stop undermining Europe's security. Meeting Kaja Kallas in Brussels on Wednesday, Wang Yi said China and the European Union "should not be regarded as opponents because of differences, nor should they seek confrontation because of disagreements", according to a Chinese foreign ministry statement. Europe is "facing various challenges", Wang said, but stressed that none were caused by China "in the past, present or future". Ahead of their meeting, Kallas, the EU's foreign affairs chief, said China was " not our adversary, but on security our relationship is under increasing strain". She said Chinese firms were "Moscow's lifeline to sustain its war against Ukraine" and accused Beijing of carrying out cyberattacks, democratic interference and unfair trade practices that "harm European security and jobs". China has portrayed itself as a neutral party in Russia's more than three-year war with Ukraine. But Western governments say Beijing has given Moscow crucial economic and diplomatic support. "Enabling war in Europe while seeking closer ties with Europe is a contradiction Beijing must address," Kallas added on Wednesday. Wang, meanwhile, sought to cast Beijing as a steady counterweight against superpower rival Washington, which has threatened to slap sweeping tariffs on imports from European nations. "The path taken by the United States should not be used as a reflection of China," he said. "China is not the United States." Beijing's foreign ministry also said the two sides had discussed Ukraine, the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, and the Iran nuclear issue. Beijing and Brussels should treat one another with "respect", Wang said, adding that Europe should pursue a more "active and pragmatic" China policy. The Chinese diplomat also met European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and his Belgian counterpart Maxime Prevot on Wednesday. China and the EU should "uphold multilateralism and free trade ... and work together to address global challenges such as climate change", Wang told von der Leyen. Wang will next travel to Germany, where he will hold talks with Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on diplomacy and security. And in France, Wang will meet minister for Europe and foreign affairs Jean-Noel Barrot, who visited China in March.
