With about 78,000 houses having been built in the rural areas of Tamil Nadu under the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam (KKI) scheme, authorities are taking steps to expedite the construction of nearly 1.2 lakh more houses.
The plan is to ensure the completion of the remaining houses in a few months, said a senior official of the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj department.
Launched during 2024-25, the KKI envisages the construction of one lakh houses annually. Of the 1,00,000 houses approved last year, 76,468 houses have been completed. In the case of 23,255 houses, at least the roof has been laid. As for the remaining 277 houses, action has been initiated to bring the construction up to the stage of roofing in 10 days.
As regards the houses sanctioned this year, 18 houses have been completed. For 82,765 houses, the completion of the basement stage has at least been accomplished. The progress in the construction of the houses includes the provision of lintel for 23,564 houses, the laying of roof for 4,047 houses, and plastering/whitewash and colour wash for 291 units.
As of now, a sum of ₹581 crore has been incurred in the current year, which is billed as one of the expeditiously carried out works in housing projects of the RD&PR department, the official pointed out.
Out of a total grant of ₹3,100 crore set aside last year under KKI, ₹2,930 crore has been spent. Further, steps are on to release ₹267.96 crore to beneficiaries in convergence with allocations made under other schemes.
As part of the scheme, the minimum plinth area of every house is 360 sq. ft., including the kitchen. At least 300 sq. ft. will be covered with reinforced cement concrete. The unit cost of each house is ₹3.5 lakh, including the convergence with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) to facilitate 90 person days for house construction. Ten person days will be accounted for individual household latrine (IHHL), which will come under the Swachh Bharat (Grameen) at the cost of ₹12,000.
Every prospective beneficiary should hold a patta in his or her name. As for landless persons who are otherwise eligible, District Collectors have been issuing pattas so that such persons are included in the list of beneficiaries, the official clarified.

Nippo debuts BLDC ceiling fans, eyes 10% market share

Indo National Limited, the maker of the iconic Nippo brand, has announced its foray into the Rs1,000 crore BLDC (Brushless Direct Current) ceiling fan market with the launch of a new range of energy-efficient fans. The move marks a strategic expansion of Nippo's home solutions portfolio and positions the brand within India's rapidly growing energy-efficient appliance segment. The BLDC ceiling fans, developed through advanced R&D techniques such as electromagnetic simulation, sensor-less algorithm design, and power electronics optimization, promise up to 70 per cent energy savings. Operating at just 28 watts compared to the conventional 80-watt ceiling fans, the new range could save consumers approximately Rs1,870 in electricity per fan annually. 'Our entry into the ceiling fan category with BLDC technology reflects our commitment to sustainable innovation and long-term consumer value,' said Pavan Kumar BVS, CEO of Nippo. 'We are excited to offer high-performance, stylish fans that are both eco-friendly and cost-effective.' The new fan range includes two models—Vayou and Airiana—featuring high-speed performance (380 RPM), low noise (<60dB), 7-speed RF remotes (with an extra remote included), and a 5-year motor life. These models are currently available in nine key cities including Hyderabad, Vizag, Lucknow, and Nagpur, via electronics retailers and leading e-commerce platforms. India's BLDC fan market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 20–25 per cent in the coming years. Nippo aims to capture 10 per cent of this market over the next five years, leveraging its strong brand trust, distribution network, and continued investment in R&D.

Contractors Demand Immediate Release of Rs89,000 Crore in Pending Dues Across Maharashtra

Nagpur: Contractors from the Vidarbha region on Friday met Deputy Resident Collector Praveen Khande and submitted a memorandum demanding the immediate release of Rs89,000 crore in pending dues for govt works carried out across Maharashtra. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The delegation said contractors were executing key development projects for several departments, including the Public Works Department (PWD), Rural Development Department, Urban Development Department, Water Conservation and Water Resources Department, and the Jal Jeevan Mission. However, despite completing these works, they claim payments were not made for the past eight to ten months. "The dues have reached a staggering Rs89,000 crore statewide, causing immense financial distress to thousands of contractors and workers," the memorandum stated. The contractors have been voicing their concerns through various forms of protest for several months now. They warned that the ongoing delay in payments could lead to a collapse of the construction and public works sector — Maharashtra's second-largest source of employment after agriculture. Such a breakdown, they cautioned, would severely impact the livelihood of millions of workers and derail critical infrastructure and welfare projects across the state. According to figures cited by the contractors, Rs40,000 crore is pending under the PWD, Rs12,000 crore under Jal Jeevan Mission, Rs6,000 crore under the Rural Development Department, Rs13,000 crore under the Water Conservation and Water Resources Department, and Rs18,000 crore under various Urban Development schemes. They urged the state govt to take immediate and concrete action to clear the dues and prevent further disruption to the state's developmental momentum.
