Australian Prime Minister says easing of curbs on US beef not prompted by Trump

By Sam McKeith , Reuters The review had been in the works for 10 years, Albanese said (file image). Photo: RNZ / Angus Dreaver Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says a decision to ease rules on US beef imports was not prompted by US President Donald Trump. This week, Trump said the US would sell "so much" beef to Australia , after Canberra announced the relaxation of restrictions, potentially smoothing trade talks with Washington. In place since 2003, the curbs were due to concerns about bovine spongiform encephalopathy - or mad cow disease - which could kill cattle, as well as people who eat infected beef. When asked if the easing had anything to do with Trump, Albanese said: "No, this has been a process that has been there for 10 years, the review process." "This wasn't a political decision," Albanese said to Australian Broadcasting Corp television, adding that Trump had not raised the issue with him in a phone call. The comments come after US Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins called the easing a win for Trump. In April, Trump singled out the beef trade disparity with Australia, after Australia's beef exports to the US surged last year, reaching AU$4 billion (NZ$4.36b) amid a slump in US beef production. By contrast, Australia's agriculture minister said the rules were relaxed, after a "rigourous science and risk-based assessment" concluded US measures to monitor and control cattle movement were effectively managing biosecurity risks. News of Australia changing its policy was first reported by the Australian Financial Review . The report said Australia would use the easing of rules to argue its case for the US to wind back 50 percent tariffs on steel and aluminium, and Trump's threat to impose a 200 percent tariff on pharmaceuticals. The National Party - part of Australia's conservative opposition coalition - said "biosecurity should not be political" and called for an independent scientific panel to review the decision. A loosening of beef import rules is not expected to boost US shipments significantly, because Australia is a major beef producer and exporter, whose prices are much lower, according to analysts. Last year, Australia shipped almost 400,000 metric tons of beef worth US$2.9b (NZ$4.82b) to the United States, with just 269 tons of US product moving the other way. - Reuters

11 people injured and suspect in custody after 'random' stabbing in Michigan Walmart, officials say

By Zoe Sottile , CNN The sheriff said three of the victims are undergoing surgery and he was awaiting more information about the status of all the victims. Photo: 123RF Eleven people were injured in a "random" stabbing by a man with a folding knife-style weapon at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, Saturday, according to the Grand Traverse County sheriff. A 42-year-old suspect, a Michigan resident, was taken into custody, Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea said at a news conference. Shea didn't name the suspect but said authorities believe he acted alone. "There is no information indicating there were additional suspects," Shea said. "It appears that these were all random acts." The sheriff said three of the victims are undergoing surgery and he was awaiting more information about the status of all the victims. Six of the victims are male and five female, he said. Munson Healthcare, a hospital system in northern Michigan, is treating 11 victims from the incident, according to their Facebook post, which did not provide details on the exact nature of the injuries or the conditions of the victims. There was "citizen involvement" in taking the suspect into custody, Shea said. The suspect was not injured, he added. The incident started near the checkout area and involved what "appears to be a standard folding knife-style weapon," according to the sheriff. He said that the Michigan State Police Crime Lab is en route to assist with processing the scene. Once the scene is cleared, the Walmart will be able to reopen. FBI personnel are also responding to the incident to provide assistance, FBI deputy director Dan Bongino said in a post on X. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she was in touch with law enforcement about the "horrible news" in a post on X. I'm in touch with law enforcement about the horrible news out of Traverse City. Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence. I am grateful to the first responders for their swift response to apprehend the suspect. "Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence," Whitmer said. "I am grateful to the first responders for their swift response to apprehend the suspect." Walmart corporate spokesperson Joe Pennington told CNN that "violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured and we're thankful for the swift action of first responders." "We'll continue working closely with law enforcement during their investigation." Traverse City is located in northern Michigan, around 225km north of Grand Rapids. CNN has reached out to Michigan State Police and Munson Healthcare for additional information. Shea urged people to "be vigilant." Violence "is very uncommon for our area," the sheriff said. "But unfortunately ... no one is immune to this." - CNN

Disgraced US ex-congressman George Santos reports to prison

Former US Congressman George Santos arriving for a court hearing at a US district court in Long Island on 19 August, 2024. Photo: AFP/ Getty - Michael M Santiago Disgraced former Republican lawmaker George Santos, who was expelled from the US Congress for using stolen donor cash to bankroll a lavish lifestyle, reported to prison to start his seven-year sentence, authorities said. Santos, 37, had pleaded guilty to wire fraud and identity theft for his elaborate grifting while a lawmaker representing New York. He turned himself in on Friday (US time) at the federal prison in Fairton, New Jersey, the Bureau of Prisons told AFP. Despite his guilty plea, prosecutors insisted Santos's social media showed his claims of remorse "ring hollow" and Judge Joanna Seybert in April handed down a sentence of seven years and three months. The downfall of the congressman from Long Island came after it was revealed he had fabricated almost his entire backstory including his education, religion and work history. Santos was elected to the US House of Representatives in 2022 and indicted the following year for stealing campaign donors' identities and using their credit cards, among other charges. Santos used the stolen funds for Botox treatments and the OnlyFans porn website, as well as luxury Italian goods and vacations to the Hamptons and Las Vegas, according to an investigation by a congressional ethics committee. Santos's bizarre biographical fabrications included claiming to have worked for Goldman Sachs, being Jewish and having been a college volleyball star. He was ultimately doomed by the congressional probe that found overwhelming evidence of misconduct and accused him of seeking to "fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy". Santos was expelled from the House in 2023, becoming only the third person to be ejected as a US lawmaker since the Civil War, a rebuke previously reserved for traitors and convicted criminals. - AFP
