X-Men and Tony Stark will be recast, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige reveals
Halle, Hugh, Robert — it's been a honor, but all good things must come to an end.
Following 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars, several key characters in the MCU will be recast, including Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and the full team of X-Men, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced during a Friday press event, Variety reported.
Feige said the company is "utilizing" Secret Wars "not just to round out the stories we've been telling post-Endgame, just as importantly — and you can look at the at the Secret Wars comics for where that takes you — it very, very much sets us up for the future... Endgame, literally, was about endings. Secret Wars is about is about beginnings."
Marvel has slowed the pace of MCU releases from the franchise's point of greatest saturation, the mid-to-late 2010s, in which three, even four films were released per year.
The company released only one film in 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine, and though three are slated for this year — Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*, both previously released, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, coming next weekend — there's just one film apiece pegged to 2026 and 2027: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Secret Wars represents a critical reorienting juncture for the franchise, Feige indicated, but hesitated to call it a reboot.
"'Reboot' is a scary word... Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people," he explained, describing the film instead as a "reset" for the MCU. "Reset, singular timeline — we're thinking along those lines."
"X-Men is where that will happen next," he added.
It's no surprise that Feige is is pegging a "reset" to the X-Men, given the company's years-long effort to buy the characters back from 21st Century Fox, which finally came to fruition in 2019 when Disney, Marvel's parent company, acquired Fox.
In 2024, Feige teased "a new age of mutants and of the X-Men," and this past March, Marvel finally announced that after a smattering of X-Men teases in MCU films — the original films' star Kelsey Grammer appeared as Beast in The Marvels, while Patrick Stewart's Professor X showed up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — Avengers: Doomsday will officially mark the MCU's first full showing of X-Men characters.Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden have all been confirmed to reprise their roles in the MCU. Channing Tatum, who finally brought X-Men fan-favorite character Gambit to the big screen in Deadpool & Wolverine, will also join them.
"There've been more X-Men movies than there were Spidey movies or Fantastic Four movies, so a lot has been done," Feige noted, while speaking at a recent Fantastic Four roundtable, ScreenRant reported. "But again, because it's almost a comic legacy unto itself, there's so much more to tap into it and there's so many sagas within sagas for X-Men."
The last time the X-Men franchise saw a major cast overhaul was for 2011 prequel film X-Men First Class. The new cast included James McAvoy as Professor X, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, and Nicholas Hoult as Beast. Old then met new in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past, in which Hugh Jackman's Wolverine from the original films goes back in time to collaborate with the prequel films' stars, while the film cuts between the two timelines and their different casts, including Halle Berry as Storm, Anna Paquin as Rogue, Famke Janssen as Jean Grey, among other stars of the original films.
X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016 and Dark Phoenix in 2019 also starred the McAvoy- and Fassbender-led prequels cast, though the later films did not enjoy the same enthusiastic critical reception the first two films featuring the prequel cast did.

Baby Franklin is an immensely powerful mutant, and we get a glimpse of his powers at the end of Fantastic Four , when he resurrects his mother after she dies to save him. This is just a glimpse at his future potential—in the comics, Franklin can reshape reality, blast powerful energy beams, predict the future, and more. Indeed, Franklin is practically a god, destined to survive the end of the universe and become the next Devourer of Worlds, within a new universe. It's unclear if the MCU is going to embrace this almighty version of Franklin—his powers and destiny might be toned down somewhat. 'Fantastic Four's' Ending And Post-Credits Scene, Explained The combined efforts of the team are not quite enough to conceal baby Franklin from the all-seeing eye of Galactus. But the giant's powerful ally, the Silver Surfer, has experienced a change of heart, thanks to the Human Torch. It is revealed that the Surfer's name is Shalla-Bal, and like Galactus, she was once mortal, choosing to sacrifice her humanity to save her own planet, bound in the service of Galactus. If Thor is going to be Avengers: Doomsday's second lead, I know exactly how Chris Hemsworth trained for Marvel's biggest moment of the decade

We know all too well that Avengers: Doomsday will put Robery Downey Jr.'s return to the MCU as Doctor Doom front and center, but if rumors are to be believed (first discussed by entertainment journalist Matthew Belloni on The Town podcast), Chris Hemsworth's Thor will be the new Marvel movie's secondary lead character. Chris Hemsworth's potential casting update in Avengers: Doomsday makes sense, given that he's the most prominent Avenger of the bunch out of the movie's confirmed cast, meaning it's only natural he'll step up to lead our heroes as the newbies find their feet and the X-Men make their full transition into their new cinematic universe. I should stress 'confirmed' here. After the studio's five-hour Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement that convinced millions of people to watch a bunch of empty chairs, it's still suspected that a hefty percentage of actors involved in the movie have been kept under wraps. If any of the original Avengers who survived the post-Thanos chaos happen to pop up, it could be endgame (pun intended) for Thor's leading man reputation. Even so, how much attention anyone can successfully draw away from Doom himself remains to be seen. Regardless, I've been keeping an eye on Hemsworth's moves in the build-up to Doomsday filming (in a non-stalkery, appreciative way), and one of his biggest new projects likely explains how he's prepared for Marvel's most momentous moment of the decade. And if I'm right, everyone else he's squaring up to better be wary. Chris Hemsworth's new series Limitless was ideal training for Thor's return in Avengers: Doomsday I'm talking about the second season of Limitless: Live Better Now, Hemsworth's documentary series made in conjunction with Darren Aronofsky, Disney+ and National Geographic. We're veering off course from how he was pushed to his limits the first time around, instead exploring how to live a better life through three high-stakes challenges focused on pain, fear, and cognitive decline. Translated, that means scaling the highest man-made rock climbing wall in Switzerland, being put through South Korea's rigorous SAS training program and learning the drums to play with Ed Sheeran on his most recent sold-out stadium tour. Not only does this mean Thor can now serenade Doctor Doom with 'Thinking Out Loud' if it all goes belly up, but the physical and mental demands of Hemsworth's tasks should mean he's in the best shape possible to give the action-packed performance of his life. From the trailer alone, we see him push through feats that even his stunt double hasn't had to endure, going far beyond the typical fitness regimes we know the actor has always kept up with. He's not so successful when he's hooked up to a cramp simulator while trying to play Jenga with his mates, but hey, even the best of us are wiped out by a bad tummyache. Taking on two huge physical feats within the last year likely means Hemsworth's resilience is built up to brand-new levels, with the Swiss climbing wall and South Korean training regime being among the hardest in the world to get through. It's also likely he's built up a new kind of tolerance for managing pain (episode 3 will look at this more directly), meaning he can push himself ever further on Marvel's set. Does this mean Doctor Doom can do less fictional damage on our alleged lead Avenger? I'd like to think so. Thankfully, we're going to get Limitless episodes a lot sooner than we have to wait to find out if Thor is indeed our second lead in Doomsday. Limitless arrives on Disney+ (internationally) and Hulu (US) on August 15, 2025, with all three episodes released in one go. Doomsday arrives in cinemas on December 18, 2026, delayed from its original release date of May 1, 2026. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day' set photos might have just revealed when this movie takes place in the MCU
'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' is less than a year away in our timeline. But now, we might know exactly when the next Spidey movie takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Unvierse's timeline. Yesterday (July 28), the account Spider-Man News took to X (Twitter) to share photos from the set of the next "Spider-Man" film. These photos don't share much at first glance, but there's a key detail hiding in them that potentially reveals when this movie is set in the MCU. Now, it seems that "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" will also join these two movies before "Doomsday" in the MCU timeline, and likely in 2027 as well. We still don't know exactly when it takes place in relation to "Brave New World" or "Thunderbolts*," but given we don't expect the fourth "Spider-Man" film to be tied narratively to those two films, it likely doesn't matter.
