Mobile fish canteens to be launched across Mandya soon
The fish canteens developed under Sanjeevini National Rural Livelihood Mission were aimed at empowering women economically.
Chief Executive Officer of Mandya Zilla Panchayat K.R. Nandini said there were abundant opportunities for inland freshwater fishing in Mandya district. As part of the initiative, sea food products will be sourced through KFDC at affordable rates.
The 'Akkana Mane Meenoota', loosely translated as 'fish meals from sister's house', will also help create awareness about the nutritional benefits of fish consumption among the public, while providing hygienic and tasty meals.
To start with, women from 11 Self Help Groups aspiring for self-reliance and economic progress have been selected by the Zilla Panchayat.
While the Fisheries Department had provided 11 'Matsya Vahini' vehicles for the project, the selected women will be given training by the Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETI) on how to operate electric vehicles and prepare high-quality fish products. They will be get uniforms that will help instill a sense of professionalism.
'In a few days, the women will begin serving fish products at affordable rates to the public,' said Ms. Nandini.
The mobile canteens are expected to complement Akka fish canteens, which will be set up in areas that record a high footfall and at tourist destinations in the district.
Ms. Nandini said the Akka fish canteens will enable tourists visiting Mandya to relish quality fish products at affordable rates.
Plans were afoot to set up the canteens at 13 places across the district, including five in Malavalli taluk, two each in Srirangapatna, Pandavapura and Mandya taluks, and one each in K.R. Pet and Nagamangala taluks.
With 11 Akkana Mane Meenoota mobile canteens and 13 Akka fish canteens, these 24 fish canteens will soon begin operating across the district, providing employment to at least 100 women, who will be establishing self-reliant enterprises, thereby improving not only their family's standard of living, but also emerging as successful small entrepreneurs, said Ms. Nandini.
Minister for Agriculture N. Cheluvarayaswamy, who is also the Minister in charge of Mandya district, inspected the mobile fish canteens on Monday. MLAs Ravikumar Ganiga and Udaya M., Deputy Commissioner Kumar, and Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi were present.

6,000 food processing industries will be set up in Karnataka: Minister
Minister for Agriculture N. Cheluvarayaswamy on Wednesday said the government has decided to establish nearly 6,000 food processing units in Karnataka, and added that a financial assistance of up to ₹15 lakh can be availed under the 'Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises' (PMFME) Scheme, with the State government providing ₹9 lakh and the Centre giving ₹6 lakh as subsidy. The Minister was speaking after inaugurating an awareness workshop on the PMFME Scheme in an innovative manner — by extracting oil using a traditional oil press at the Cauvery Hall of the Zilla Panchayat in Mandya. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India; Karnataka State Agricultural Produce Processing and Export Corporation Limited; Mandya District Administration; Zilla Panchayat, and the Department of Agriculture had jointly organised the workshop. In his address, the Minister said Mandya stands second in the State for providing loans and subsidies under the scheme for setting up food processing industries. Along with traditional farming, integrated farming — even in one acre of land — can give more yield with minimal expenditure with proper guidance from farm scientists and officers. The Minister said a person can earn at least ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 a month if schemes for food processing are used effectively. Union Minister for Agriculture Shivraj Singh Chouhan has appreciated the State Agriculture Department for its works and stated that Karnataka has performed better than other states, he added. Advising young farmers to turn into entrepreneurs adopting food processing technologies, the Minister said that instead of looking for jobs, the youth can create jobs as well by setting up units. Most people in Mandya have lands, and integrated farm practices can therefore be adopted as it provides higher yields, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy noted. The Minister also advised that one need not be looking for high profile jobs just because they are highly educated, as they can also become entrepreneurs, setting up their own enterprises under the PMFME. ''It can be a profitable venture.' ZP CEO K.R. Nandini said Mandya is an agriculture-based district, but the income of farmers is not satisfactory. Paddy, sugarcane, and coconut are the major crops cultivated in the district, she said, suggesting that farmers can diversify their crops to enhance their incomes and choose crops suitable for the soil and climate of the district. Avocados grow well here and have good demand abroad, she said. Value addition to farm products can fetch good returns, and with the demand for ready-made food, farmers must take advantage of this, she said, adding that food processing industries create employment opportunities. BAMUL intends to open Nandini parlours near Bengaluru metro stations
To provide a push to the 'Nandini' brand, D.K. Suresh, president of Bangalore Milk Union Ltd. (BAMUL), met with top officials of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) on Friday, requesting them to provide space to construct Nandini parlours near metro stations. 'With the aim of expanding the sales network of Nandini milk and dairy products, a request was submitted to grant space for constructing Nandini parlours in the open vacant areas belonging to the department in front of metro stations to sell the products,' Mr. Suresh said on social media platform X. Sources in BMRCL said that while the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) will set up Nandini parlours in six metro stations, BAMUL has also been asked to identify the other stations where they would want to set up the parlours. Previously, in June, KMF was instructed by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to submit applications to a tender called by BMRCL to open Nandini outlets in metro stations after the government was blamed by the opposition for favouring Amul over Nandini. Amul was the lone applicant for BMRCL's tender and was allowed to open its outlets in 10 metro stations.
