Fake STF officer among 3 held for duping people with fake govt job offers
The police allegedly recovered mobile phones, forged appointment letters, fake ID cards, recruitment advertisements, and impersonated government uniforms, including caps and belts, from their possession, they said.
Superintendent of Police (City) Shankar Prasad said that the gang, comprising Neeraj, Satish, and Himanshu, allegedly used counterfeit appointment letters, identity cards, and recruitment materials to mislead job seekers.
They wore fake uniforms resembling those of government departments to appear legitimate.
One such case involved duping a man named Gajendra Singh of Rs 15 lakh in the Pahasu area on the promise of securing him a government job, the officer said.
During the raid, police seized 20 Aadhaar cards, identity documents, posting and appointment letters, photocopies of bank passbooks, 12 fake posting orders, four character certificates, and other forged paperwork used to carry out the scam, he added.
Neeraj has been identified as the gang leader, posing as an STF inspector, according to the police. PTI COR KIS MNK MNK

ED's first-ever raids in Andaman & Nicobar linked to cooperative bank fraud
The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday conducted its first-ever searches in Andaman and Nicobar Islands as part of a money laundering case probe linked to an alleged cooperative bank loan 'fraud' involving a former MP from the Union Territory, official sources said. The case pertains to the Andaman Nicobar State Cooperative Bank (ANSCB) and its vice chairman Kuldeep Rai Sharma. Sharma, a 57-year-old Congress leader, is a former MP of the UT (2019-24). Nine places in and around Port Blair and two in Kolkata were raided by the officials of the central probe agency under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said. This is the first time that the agency has undertaken searches in the Union Territory located in the Bay of Bengal, they said. Sources said the agency has recovered some documents pointing towards "large-scale" irregularities in the grant of loans and overdraft facilities by ANSC Bank. The role of former Congress MP Sharma is also under the scanner of the ED, according to the sources. They alleged that a group of about 15 entities/companies were created by suspects for the benefit of Sharma and loan facilities of more than Rs 200 crore were fraudulently taken by these entities from the ANSCB. The sources said documents collected indicate that loan facilities were extended to various shell companies/ firms by ignoring the laid down procedures and guidelines of the bank. The money laundering case stems from an FIR of the Crime and Economic Offences Wing of the Andaman Nicobar Police.

2008 Malegaon blast: BJP's Pragya Thakur, Lieutenant Colonel Purohit among 7 acquitted
A special court in Mumbai acquitted Bharatiya Janata Party leader Pragya Singh Thakur, Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit and five others on Thursday in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, The Indian Express reported. Judge AK Lahoti of the National Investigation Agency court also directed the Maharashtra government to pay a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families of those who died in the blast and Rs 50,000 to the persons who were injured. Six persons were killed and around 100 were injured when an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle went off near a mosque in Malegaon in northern Maharashtra on September 29, 2008. Thakur and Purohit were arrested later that year. Five others – Major Ramesh Upadhyay, Sameer Kulkarni, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Dwivedi and Sudhakar Chaturvedi – were also named accused in the case. All seven of them were charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and the Indian Penal Code. The case was initially investigated by the Maharashtra anti-terrorism squad. It was transferred to the National Investigation Agency in 2011. On Thursday, the judge said the prosecution had proved that a blast occurred in Malegaon, ANI reported. However, it failed to prove that a bomb was placed in that particular motorcycle, he added. 'The bike allegedly involved in the blast did not have a clear chassis number,' the Hindustan Times quoted Lahoti as saying. 'Prosecution could not prove that it was in [Thakur's] possession immediately before the blast.' A chassis number, also known as the Vehicle Identification Number, is a code that can identify the motorcycle and provide information about its make, model and year, among other specifications. The court also said that the site of the blast was not barricaded properly by the police, which led to the contamination of evidence, The Times of India reported. Lahoti further noted that some medical certificates had been manipulated, adding that the actual number of those injured in the blast was 95 and not the initially reported 101. The Unlawful Activities Prevention Act cannot be invoked in the case as the 'sanction was not taken as per rules', the court added. Thakur was a BJP MP from Bhopal between 2019 and 2024.
