Penang to launch raids on durian fraud hotspots, warns sellers against mislabelling
KEPALA BATAS: Authorities in Penang have identified several hotspots selling imported durians, particularly from Thailand, falsely marketed as the famed Balik Pulau variety.
State Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol said joint operations involving the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Agriculture Department and the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) will be launched soon to curb such fraudulent practices.
'We've identified two or three hotspots where durians are brought in by truck from Thailand but sold as local produce.
'We're just waiting for the right time to conduct raids and issue compounds,' he told reporters after officiating the State Interim Report Launch at the Bumbong Lima Agricultural Training Institute today.
Also present was Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) Chief Statistician and Agriculture Census 2024 Commissioner Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin.
He said the enforcement followed public complaints and ongoing monitoring by authorities, including a recent roadblock at the Juru toll plaza involving the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS) and other agencies to detect non-compliant agricultural products, especially durians.
While durians from other regions are not banned, Fahmi stressed that sellers must not misrepresent them as Balik Pulau durians.
'We now have a 'Track and Trace' system in place since June 1. Every durian is tagged with a QR code that lets consumers verify its origin, from farm to table,' he said.
He encouraged the public to report suspicious sellers and noted that most legitimate durian farmers in Penang have adopted the tracking system to boost transparency and consumer confidence.

SHAH ALAM – Police have arrested a 36-year-old mother and her 61-year-old boyfriend to facilitate investigations into both a planned rape at a Kuala Lumpur hotel and a prior alleged rape of her 13-year-old daughter in 2024. According to media reports, the victim discovered text messages between her mother and the suspect. The mother allegedly consented to the act and arranged a meeting at an unspecified hotel in Kuala Lumpur. Ampang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail confirmed that both suspects were arrested on the same day. Investigators cited damning text messages proving the mother's active involvement in planning the assault. 'The correspondence unequivocally shows the boyfriend's intent to rape the victim, with the mother's full approval. Federal Police Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division's (D11) principal assistant director Senior Assistant Commissioner Siti Kamsiah Hassan revealed the victim had been previously assaulted at age 12. The girl awoke during the mid-2024 incident to find the suspect raping her, as her mother observed. Initial investigations found that both suspects tested negative for drugs and had no prior criminal records. The court approved a seven-day remand until July 4 for further interrogations. The case is being investigated under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code for rape, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment and caning. Authorities have recorded statements from five individuals, including the two suspects. The victim is scheduled to give her formal testimony at the Child Interview Centre (CIC) on July 1. Mohd Shuhaily appointed AKPS director effective tomorrow
PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, the current director of Bukit Aman's Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ), has been appointed as the new Director-General of the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The appointment takes effect tomorrow and will run for two years, ending on June 30, 2027. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar expressed confidence in Mohd Shuhaily's ability to lead AKPS, citing his 26 years of police service and extensive experience in various units of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). 'This confidence is based on Mohd Shuhaily's competence and extensive experience in various units in the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), both at national and international levels. His leadership is also expected to further strengthen the country's border security and uphold a culture of integrity in line with the MADANI values,' he said. Mohd Shuhaily holds a Bachelor of International Relations from the International Islamic University Malaysia and a Master of Science in Strategic Studies from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
