Hui Ying (third right) sharing a light moment with attendees at the durian event at Lee Sih Chong Soo Hall in Burma Road. — KT GOH/The Star THE aroma of durian filled the air during a festival at Lee Sih Chong Soo Hall along Burma Road in George Town to celebrate the spirit of community. The event, organised by Tanjong MP and Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying, saw about 500kg of the King of Fruits served to some 300 guests. These comprised community group members and media personnel who had contributed time and effort to help the public. Hui Ying thanked the many hands behind community- building in her constituency. 'We gather not only to enjoy the King of Fruits, but more importantly, to appreciate our comrades who have always served with dedication for the well-being of our community. 'I would like to express my deepest appreciation to all, including members of the Village Community Management Councils, Women and Family Development Committee, Youth Committee, and Parliament and service centre members, as well as officials from various departments, and agencies, including the media,' she said in her speech. Attendees were treated to a feast of premium durian varieties such as Udang Merah, Hor Lor, Kulit Hijau, and Naga Emas. Other local favourite fruits like rambutans and mangosteens were also served. Hui Ying also highlighted the Madani government reforms and achievements in national finance. 'Since taking office, the Madani government has implemented a range of bold reforms including subsidy rationalisation, expansion of SST and restructuring of national expenditure. 'These reforms have begun to bear fruit, with the fiscal deficit reduced by 17%, increased tax revenues, and Malaysia climbing to 23rd place in the World Competitiveness Ranking 2025. 'Among the reforms with the most direct impact on the people is the increase in allocation for cash assistance. 'This year, the government raised the allocation for Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) to RM13bil, up from RM10bil last year, making it the largest cash assistance in the country's history. 'Through Sara, recipients can spend the aid directly using their MyKad at over 3,700 registered shops nationwide, including more than 190 in Penang. 'The amount of assistance also increased to RM1,200 per year, and up to RM2,100 for certain households,' she said. Also present were DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang, several state assemblymen and community leaders.

Chan (fifth right) with the outstanding SPM students who received the 'Anugerah Kecemerlangan SPM MADANI' cash incentives. KOTA KINABALU (June 30): Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament cum Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities, Datuk Chan Foong Hin, has allocated over RM100,000 this year to reward 367 high-achieving students who excelled in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. This marks the second consecutive year the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary Office has hosted the 'Anugerah Kecemerlangan SPM MADANI' awards ceremony, which celebrates academic excellence and encourages students to continue striving for success. The ceremony took place on Saturday at SJKC Chung Hwa Likas. Students who achieved between 6As and 11As received cash awards of RM250 to RM300 each. Among the recipients, 113 students scored 9As or above. Special awards were also presented for Best Male Student, Best Female Student, and Best Performing School. Notably, both the top male and female students were from Tshung Tsin Secondary School: Soh Yim Qin scored 10A+, while Mohammad Arif Mohammad Adam achieved 9A+ and 1A. He reaffirmed that quality education is a right for every student, regardless of race, religion, or socioeconomic status. He also underscored the MADANI Government's commitment to ensuring equal access to education that can truly change lives and uplift communities. 'As Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized, quality education is the foundation of a MADANI society. We must cultivate a generation that is not only knowledgeable but also morally grounded, in order to build an inclusive and competitive nation,' he said. 'As a member of the MADANI administration, I fully support the Prime Minister's vision. We are committed to ensuring that no student is left behind — whether they come from B40 families, rural areas, or face physical and mental challenges.' Chan also welcomed the MADANI government's policy guaranteeing placement in the matriculation programme for all students who scored 10As and above in the 2024 SPM examination and applied for admission — regardless of race or background. He noted that this policy, introduced last year, reflects the government's commitment to fairness and equal opportunity in education. He added that the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary Office will continue to work closely with the Sabah Education Department (PPD) and local schools to improve education infrastructure, provide support for at-risk students, and encourage greater involvement from the community and private sector in shaping the future of education. Last year, Chan allocated RM55,000 to reward 205 students in Kota Kinabalu who achieved excellent results in the 2023 SPM examination.
