Bukit Aman, KL CID join forces in probe into deadly Brickfields, Cheras shootings
KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 — The Bukit Aman and Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Departments (CID) are working together to hunt down suspects linked to two recent fatal shootings at Brickfields and Cheras here.
Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said investigations into both cases are currently ongoing, with the Sarawak CID assisting in checking the motive of the Cheras shooting.
'Photofits by witnesses at the scene of both the shootings cannot be done as the suspects in the (Cheras) case was wearing face masks and helmets (in the Brickfields shooting),' he added.
Two men riding a motorcycle had fired shots at a group of men at a restaurant Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Brickfields, killing one and injuring two at 10.50pm on June 13, while another man was killed in front of a convenience store at Jalan Loke Yew, Cheras on June 16. — Bernama

MMEA Conducting Thorough Investigation Into Pulau Perhentian Boat Capsize Incident
KUALA BERANG, June 29 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) will conduct a thorough investigation in connection with the boat capsize incident in Pulau Perhentian, Besut last night, which resulted in the deaths of three victims, including two family members. Its director-general, Admiral Maritime Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said that although the incident was reported to have occurred when the boat carrying 15 passengers was hit by a storm, his department will conduct a thorough investigation, including the boat's licencing, cargo carried, and ensuring all regulations were complied with. "We will conduct an investigation, including contacting the victims involved and carrying out a detailed investigation in various aspects," he said when met by reporters after the launching ceremony of the MADANI Adopted Village and MADANI Adopted School programme by the People's Volunteer Corps (RELA) 2025 at the grand hall of the Hulu Terengganu District Council here today. The ceremony was officiated by the Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Mohd Rosli added that his team always intensifies control and enforcement, especially since tourism activities on the beach and at sea are becoming more vibrant after the Northeast Monsoon season has ended. In the boat incident that happened at 10.30 pm yesterday, S. Arumugam, 40, and daughter 3, as well as female relative V. Vennpani, 10, died whereas another two victims are still being treated in hospital, including one in a critical condition, while 10 others survived. All the boat's passengers, aged 40 to three years, who were relatives were said to have been on their way back from Pulau Perhentian Kecil to Pulau Perhentian Besar after dinner when a big wave suddenly hit the boat and caused it to capsize. In the same development, Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said his team, together with the MMEA and Malaysian Marine Department, always collaborate to ensure law enforcement, including among tourist boat operators. He also reminded all boat operators to ensure that all boat drivers are not involved in any crime, especially drug-related ones.

SEREMBAN, June 29 (Bernama) -- The body of a Bangladeshi man was found floating in Sungai Muar near Kampung Kuala Gemas in Gemas this morning. Tampin police chief Supt Amiruddien Sariman said police received a report on the discovery at 9.55 am today. He said the 46-year-old labourer was previously reported missing after he was believed to have drowned while setting up a fishing net at a water pump area in Kampung Bangkahulu, last Thursday.

Cops to take charge of revamped scam response centre
Malaysians lost RM1.2 billion to various scams last year. In a case last month, a 53-year-old woman was swindled of nearly RM1 million by a love scam syndicate. PETALING JAYA : The police are to soon take charge of the National Scam Response Centre, which will be beefed up with its 997 hotline open around the clock, home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said. There had been 'certain operational shortcomings' under its current structure, he said, according to Bernama. The centre was set up in 2022 as a joint venture between the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre, the police, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, Bank Negara Malaysia, banks and telecommunications companies. 'Under the new structure, the police will directly receive scam reports, record the necessary details and notify the relevant banks immediately to freeze the victim's account. Efforts to recover stolen funds will follow promptly,' Saifuddin was quoted as saying. The police will now be supported by the other key agencies instead. He said the restructuring will also enable NSRC's 997 hotline to be operational 24 hours daily, with the centre to get more manpower to improve its response time. Saifuddin said the proposed improvements were approved by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and will be executed soon. Anwar had said on Thursday that the centre's role would be expanded to cover all forms of cybercrime. The centre was set up in 2022 to deal with the growing number of cyber fraud cases in Malaysia, including phishing scams, Macau scams, malware attack scams, parcel scams and love scams. Last year, Anwar said in a parliamentary reply that Malaysians suffered the loss of RM1.22 billion to online scams from January to October 2024. He said the figure includes losses from various fraudulent schemes, such as telecommunications fraud, e-commerce scams, non-existent loans, love scams and fake investments.
