MUMBAI:
International Sufi Caravan
head
Mufti Manzur Ziyaee
has demanded strong and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators of the
Pahalgam terror attack
, which claimed 28 lives and left a dozen injured.
"This is an attack on the soul of India. These were innocent tourists spending their vacation in the valley at the peak of the tourism season. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must be brought to justice," said Mufti Ziyaee.

The International Sufi Caravan chief called upon Indians not to fall into the trap of viewing it solely as a terror issue. "Do not make it a Hindu-Muslim issue. If the victims were asked to identify themselves, it was deliberately done to create
communal hatred
in the country, and we can defeat the nefarious design of the terrorists by staying together and maintaining communal harmony," he said.

Mufti Ziyaee also stated that the terrorists who killed the innocent tourists cannot be called Muslims.
"Killing one innocent is like killing all of humanity, and saving an innocent life is like saving humanity. While we condemn this dastardly attack, we should not forget that there were many Kashmiri Muslims who saved the lives of many tourists by risking their own lives. We must appreciate and thank these bravehearts," he said.
Mufti Ziyaee added that the whole country has joined hands in this moment of sorrow, and we must not allow our enemies to take advantage. "This is not the time to create divisions. This is a time to stay united against the forces that attacked innocent tourists," he said.

" Desh Secular Nahi Hai": NDTV Confronts Vigilante Over Kanwar Yatra Crackdown

Muzaffarnagar (UP): Members of a Hindu group who asked a Muslim man to remove his pants to check his identity have doubled down on their act, claiming they have a right to check the religion of people working at shops and eateries along Kanwar Yatra routes in Uttar Pradesh. The row began after a Muslim man named Tajammul was found working under the assumed identity of "Gopal" at a roadside dhaba to protect himself from Hindu groups. The dhaba - which has since shut down due to protests - is off National Highway 58 in UP's Muzaffarnagar. Tajammul alleged members of the Hindu group pulled down his pants and thrashed him. NDTV spoke to the members of the Hindu group for an explanation. To a question why they took the law in their hands when it was the police's job to look into it, one of the vigilantes shot back, "Who has given you permission to ask such questions? If you were in our shoes you would have also asked for an Aadhaar card. These days media people show themselves as secular." When pointed out that the Constitution clearly says India is a secular nation, and whether they would either go by what they believe or what the Constitution states, he replied, " No, this country is not secular. This is the land of Sanatana dharma." He raised objections to Muslims working at what he called Hindu areas along the Kanwar Yatra route. "You tell me, who gave certificates to Muslims to put up boards in their shops showing gods and goddesses of Hindus, of Sanatana dharma?" he said. To a question why they are doing something which is the exclusive domain of the police, he said, "We can raise our voices. We have a right to ask." The controversy came a day after the UP government made it a must for all shops along the Kanwar Yatra route to have proper licences and clearly show the owner's original name. The Yogi Adityanath government has defended the move, with state minister Sanjay Nishad saying the accusation holds no weight. "The party whose nameplate the public has torn down and thrown away, that party's words hold no weight... Our government makes decisions for the welfare of the public, which is why the public stands with us," Mr Nishad said. Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said every buyer has a right to know from whom they are buying. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also slammed the UP government over its directive. "There are many hotels near the Muzaffarnagar bypass. These hotels have been there for years. Didn't the Kanwar Yatra start here 10 years ago? The Kanwar Yatra used to start peacefully. There was no unrest there. Why is all this happening now? Now, they are asking for Aadhaar cards from hoteliers. They are making shopkeepers remove their pants," he said. The yatra is scheduled to start on July 10. In procession, Kanwariyas collect water from a river and carry it hundreds of kilometres to offer it to the shrines of Lord Shiva.

'Dear Modi ji, Please Listen...': Naveen Patnaik, BJD On BJP MLA's Sexist Remark

New Delhi: Sexist remarks by BJP MLA Santosh Khatua - targting the BJD's Lekhasri Samantsinghar - have led to yet another fierce showdown between the ruling and main opposition parties in Odisha. The remarks have been condemned as 'misogynistic' and 'derogatory', and invited sharp responses from Ms Samantsinghar and her party boss, ex-Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. "The derogatory remarks made by BJP MLA Santosh Khatua against a respected BJD woman leader are extremely unfortunate," Mr Patnaik said, "Attempting to assassinate a woman's character.. is a reflection of a perverse mentality and aimed at suppressing women's voices." In a long and scathing X post the BJD boss also called out senior BJP members for their "profound silence", and said, "Not a single leader has come forward to condemn such reprehensible remarks... the silence clearly reveals the stance of the ruling party in public." — Naveen Patnaik (@Naveen_Odisha) July 3, 2025 But Mr Patnaik wasn't done yet. The BJD chief - whose 24-year reign as Chief Minister crashed to a halt last year, after the BJP's shock election victory - also ripped into the saffron party for failing to respect women, and said, "Hearing such derogatory words from an MP is utterly intolerable and inhumane." 'Dear Modi ji... Please Listen...' Ms Samantsinghar responded on X too. She shared a video of Mr Khatua speaking, tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and said, "Dear Modi ji... please listen to your MLA from Odisha talking about women politicians... I know you have competent and intelligent Odia officers... please ask them to translate for you." Dear Modi Ji @narendramodi, Please listen to your MLA from Odisha talking about women politicians. This is true blood bjp neta giving true salute to women. I know you have very competent and intelligent Odia officers in @PMOIndia and Party. Pl ask them to translate for you.… — Lekha Samantsinghar (@DrLekhaShree) July 3, 2025 "After listening to it, we will see if you still have motivation to talk about 'naari ka samman' ('respect for women)', or Operation Sindoor," Ms Samantsinghar, who joined the BJD from the BJP in April last year, shortly before the Lok Sabha and Assembly election, said. The reference to Op Sindoor - India's armed response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack - was particularly fierce. Sources said the operation had been named by Mr Modi because 'sindoor' refers to the vermillion mark Hindu women wear on their forehead after marriage. Op Sindoor was meant to avenge the honour of the women whose husbands were killed in Pahalgam, most after the terrorists established their religious identity. Ms Samantsinghar also said the BJP's attitude towards women had led to an increase in levels of violent crime against in the state. "Your promise for women will sound hollow if you fail to take action against such misogynistic elected representatives," she warned the PM. Mr Kathua has not yet responded to criticism from the BJD leaders. BJP Leader Arrested The BJP-BJD tension has only been exacerbated by the Kathua-Samantsinghar row. The two parties also clashed over the horrific assault of an Odisha government officer. BJP leader Jagannath Prasad has been arrested for the attack on Ratnakar Sahoo; videos showed Mr Sahoo being pulled out of a govenment building by a mob, thrown down the stairs, and then dragged down the driveway while some of the goons kick him. I am utterly shocked seeing this video. Today, Shri Ratnakar Sahoo, OAS Additional Commissioner, BMC, a senior officer of the rank of Additional Secretary was dragged from his office and brutally kicked and assaulted in front of a BJP Corporator, allegedly linked to a defeated… — Naveen Patnaik (@Naveen_Odisha) June 30, 2025 The horrific video provoked another strong reaction from Naveen Patnaik, who urged his successor, Mohan Charan Majhi, to take "exemplary action" against those responsible and, "more importantly political leaders who orchestrated and conspired this shameful attack". On Friday morning Mr Prasad surrendered before the police and was arrested. He said he had publicly condemned the attack and said, "Despite no evidence of my involvement... the OAS (Odisha Administrative Service) has been demanding my arrest."

Not just the US; there is another country that attained independence on July 4

Every year on July 4, the United States lights up in celebration of its Independence Day , marking the country's birth in 1776. But it's not the only nation with significant ties to this date. Across the globe, July 4 also holds deep historical meaning for other countries like the Philippines and Rwanda. In the Philippines, July 4 was once known as Philippine Independence Day, the day the country was officially recognized as a sovereign state by the United States in 1946 after years of colonization. Though the Philippines now celebrates its independence on June 12, the date of its earlier declaration from Spanish rule, July 4 still stands as a landmark in the country's long struggle for freedom. Meanwhile, in Rwanda, July 4 marks Liberation Day, commemorating the end of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. While the country's official Independence Day is July 1, Liberation Day is viewed as equally, if not more, significant, as it is symbolic of Rwanda's rebirth and movement toward unity and healing. So while Americans wave flags and watch fireworks on the Fourth of July, people in other parts of the world reflect on that same date as a powerful moment of hard-earned freedom and national transformation. How was the Philippines historically related to the US? The Philippines was earlier ruled by the United States, as a colony following Spain's surrender in the Treaty of Paris (1898). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Providers are furious: Internet access without a subscription! Techno Mag Learn More Undo This came after decades of struggle, including the Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule in the late 1800s and the Philippine-American War in the early 1900s. Although Filipino revolutionaries had already declared independence on June 12, 1898, the US did not recognise this and instead annexed the country. Filipino leaders continued their push for full sovereignty through diplomatic efforts, resulting in the Philippine Autonomy Act of 1916, which promised future independence. The promise was finally fulfilled on July 4, 1946. However, in 1962, the Philippines officially moved its Independence Day celebrations to June 12, honoring the original declaration of freedom from Spanish rule. Rwanda got freedom from Belgium on July 4 On the other hand, Rwanda celebrates Liberation Day on July 4, which marks the end of the horrific 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Although Rwanda's official Independence Day is July 1, when it gained freedom from Belgium in 1962, Liberation Day carries deep emotional and national significance. The date represents Rwanda's transition into a new era of healing and rebuilding. According to Albert Nzacahinyeretse, Church Empowerment Zone Manager at World Relief Rwanda, 'Independence is a public holiday on the first of July, but its celebration is combined with Liberation Day on the 4th of July. During the event, we celebrate unity, accountability and the nation. The independence holiday is important to us since it helps younger generations to know more about the history of the nation and get involved in developing the country,' as shared in The New Times Rwanda. So, while the US marks its independence with fireworks and festivities, other countries like the Philippines and Rwanda also look to July 4 as a day of hard-won freedom, for their own history and reasons to remember.
