OPEN// President Sisi: Egypt always has positive role in defusing conflicts

Middle East08-03-2025
CAIRO, March 7 (MENA) - President Abdel Fattah El Sisi said Egypt always has a positive role in defusing conflicts and acting as a peacemaker.
Egypt's primary goal remains achieving a ceasefire in Gaza, ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid, and securing the release of hostages; an unwavering stance that has not changed, President Sisi said during his inspection visit to the Egyptian Military Academy.
President Sisi reiterated Egypt's warning of the dangers of prolonged conflicts, noting that military confrontations can easily spiral out of control due to miscalculations, resulting in unwise decisions.
He stressed peace is a preferred choice for Egypt, noting that the large financial resources spent on conflicts could instead be directed toward development, reconstruction, and economic growth.
He further explained that whoever wins a war, he often suffers significant economic losses due to the high costs associated with military engagement.
President Sisi further underlined that Egypt is the first country to sign a peace agreement in 1979.
He praised late president Mohamed Anwar el Sadat for initiating peace talks at a time when such dialogues were unprecedented.
Shifting to the current situation in Gaza, President Sisi reaffirmed Egypt's genuine efforts in maintaining a ceasefire, facilitating humanitarian aid access, and releasing hostages.
As for the severe destruction in the war-torn Gaza, Sisi said Egypt has proposed a plan for Gaza reconstruction.
Egypt has coordinated with Arab partners to devise a comprehensive reconstruction plan for Gaza, Sisi added.
All state institutions, including Egypt's higher education and housing ministries, and the Armed Forces Engineering Authority, worked together to come up with a comprehensive document on rebuilding Gaza, the President added.
During the extraordinary Arab Summit, hosted by Egypt on Tuesday, March 4, the reconstruction plan was discussed and approved by the participants, President Sisi said, deeming it as a collective Arab initiative for Gaza reconstruction.
President Sisi also expressed his keenness on visiting the Egyptian Military Academy to greet the cadets on the holy month of Ramadan, and reassure them of the situation in the country and the whole region.
Sisi said that he regularly receives updates from the academy's leadership on educational and training processes in the academy.
Sisi stressed the importance of continuous development, saying progress is essential to achieving the best possible outcomes. (MORE)

OPEN// Egypt reaffirms support for Somalia's stability

CAIRO, July 3 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty participated Thursday in a virtual session held by the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) at the ministerial level to follow up on developments in Somalia and discuss latest updates on transition from the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). The foreign minister reaffirmed Egypt's firm and supportive stand regarding Somalia's security, stability, unity and territorial integrity. Abdelatty praised efforts made by the Somali government to restore security and stability and strengthen governance and State institutions across the country. The foreign minister also reaffirmed Egypt's solidarity with the Somali government and people and backing for efforts to enhance the capacity of national Somali institutions and the gradual transfer of security responsibilities to the Somali security forces. Meantime, Abdelatty voiced Egypt's concern over the ongoing security challenges posed by terrorist groups, particularly Al-Shabaab, stressing the importance of ensuring a smooth and coordinated transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM. All steps are essential for preserving the security gains achieved so far and preventing security gaps that could be exploited, he added. The foreign minister underlined the importance of providing regular and sustainable funding for the AUSSOM to enable it to fully carry out its mandate, warning that failure to secure adequate funding would undermine the mission's ability to perform its tasks and negatively affect the entire Horn of Africa and the international community, including disrupting global maritime trade routes and increasing terrorist threats. In conclusion, Abdelatty emphasized Egypt's commitment to supporting Somalia at both bilateral and multilateral levels through capacity-building programs, training personnel, supporting security and civil institutions and contributing to the provision of humanitarian assistance. Egypt Becomes First Arab Nation to Chair FAO Council

Egypt becomes the first Arab country to hold the Independent Chairperson position at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization Council. Jul 04, 2025 Egyptian diplomat Mina Rizk has been elected as the Independent Chairperson of the Council of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the first Arab official to assume the post since the agency was founded in 1945. The election took place during the FAO's 44th session in Rome, where Egypt also secured a seat on the General Committee of the FAO Conference. The role, held for a renewable one-year term, includes guiding consensus on strategic policies, programme priorities, and budgetary decisions within the Council. According to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rizk's election reflects Egypt's expanding role in multilateral governance related to agriculture, sustainability, and food systems. It aligns with the country's broader agenda of increasing influence within global development institutions. The FAO Council, comprising 49 regional member countries, acts as the organisation's executive arm. As Independent Chairperson, Rizk will oversee high-level discussions on critical issues such as climate resilience, food insecurity, and sustainable agricultural development.
