Angels star Mike Trout joins the 1,000-RBI club with a 'big-time blast'
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — One swing of the bat was more than enough for Mike Trout to deliver a reminder about his impact on baseball.
The Angels star hit a massive homer to center field on Sunday to move past 1,000 RBIs in his career, a two-run shot that helped Los Angeles beat the Seattle Mariners 4-1.
'It takes your teammates to get on base, and after the game, that was one of the things I pointed out,' Trout said of a clubhouse toast that included whiskey and words of appreciation. 'None of this is possible without my teammates. It's been fun.'
Now with 1,001 RBIs, another Trout milestone is around the corner as the three-time American League MVP reached 397 home runs with his fifth-inning drive that traveled an estimated 443 feet.
'He couldn't have drawn it up any better, putting a big-time blast like that to center field,' said Jo Adell, Trout's successor in center. 'I'm honored to be able to start my career here and play with him and just see the evolution of him.'
Trout has struggled to stay on the field in recent years, with a bone bruise in his left knee forcing him to miss a month this year. He has played designated hitter since his return after starting the season in right field.
He was batting just .200 with one home run in nine games since the All-Star break, but he showed Sunday he can still deliver after 1,598 games over 15 seasons.
'Every time we talk about Mike, even 75 percent of Mike is better than most people who have ever played the game,' Angels interim manager Ray Montgomery said. 'He's going to through ups and downs just like everybody else and his are more magnified because of who he is.'
It was a day of exploits for the Angels' veterans as Kyle Hendricks picked up win No. 103 by allowing two hits over six-plus innings and Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 465th save.
Trout has 19 homers, his most since hitting 40 in 2022. He also joined Garrett Anderson and Tim Salmon as the only players to record their first 1,000 RBIs exclusively with the Angels.
'When guys are here that long and what they mean to the club, it's pretty special to be in that group,' Trout said of Anderson and Salmon, who now work with the Angels' broadcast team. 'They had unbelievable careers in an Angels uniform and when you're in the same conversation with them, it's pretty special.'

West Virginia's running back room is thin, rebounding after rough second practice
MORGANTOWN – West Virginia's second practice wasn't the best. Rich Rodriguez wasn't happy because the team didn't take any steps forward, and more importantly, the team was soft. A position he pointed out was the running backs. Rodriguez said only two of his four running backs made it to the end of the second practice without 'tapping out,' or going to trainers for injuries. 'I told those two, that's pretty good,' Rodriguez said. 'Not going to tell you who they are. But you know, there are still 4,000 kids in the portal… I can play a game without running backs. I got running backs here. I got a good group. We finished with two, so you think I'm not going to talk to my recruiting staff this afternoon? We're running a business.' The running back position might be the most important in Rodriguez's offense. Rodriguez loves to run the football. Last year at Jacksonville State, the Gamecocks rushed the ball 646 times, ranking third in the NCAA, behind military academies, Army and Air Force. Having just two backs won't get West Virginia through the season, and Rodriguez thinks they might need to add some more. There are more backs listed on the roster, seven to be exact and transfer back Tye Edwards is still dealing with NCAA waiver issues. Right now, Rodriguez named four backs who are practicing after practice No. 4 'Jahiem, Hubbard, Clay Ash, Kannon, right?' Rodriguez said. 'I think those are just the four. Numbers are a little bit less. We may add a guy or two there. Because we got to have more guys at running back. But they've done a good job. Larry's an experienced coach, picked up our system really well… It's a pretty good group.' Since Rodriguez called the backs out in practice No. 2, they've improved, which is a good sign because of how important they are to Rodriguez's offense. They're still learnin, though. Luckily, Rodriguez's running backs have one of the best running backs coaches in the nation to learn from, Larry Porter. Porter came over from North Carolina and recently produced first-round running back talent Omarion Hampton, who was the second running back selected in the 2025 NFL Draft behind Ashton Jeanty with the 22nd overall pick. Through the first four practices, Porter is doing a lot of installing and teaching the backs their role in Rodriguez's offense. 'I feel like it's my job to teach them what to do and how to do it, and also the expectations that we have as a team as we try to build this culture,' Porter said. 'But overall, that's kind of where it is, building a foundation of the standard that we need to be successful throughout the course of a season.' Porter does have some experience in the room. WVU leading rusher Jahiem White highlights the room after being named to the first team preseason All-Big 12 in early July. Porter said White has a 'good' skill set, but still has some to learn. 'I think he's an elite processor from the standpoint of being able just to navigate space in front of him,' Porter said. 'But I think that he has a lot of room to grow in every area, and he's learning how to push himself, and we're trying to get him to that point. But he has a lot of room to grow. I think he's just scratching the surface of what he can ultimately become. But again, it's that standard, and it's our job or my job to take him where he can't take himself, and that's kind of what we were working through right now.' It seemed like White had the starting job secured, but Rodriguez made it known that every position is up for grabs, even White's job. Right now, the other three fighting for the spot are Ferris State transfer redshirt junior Kannon Katzer, sophomore Clay Ash and redshirt freshman Diore Hubbard. Then, there are players, like Edwards, who have to work by themselves because the waivers haven't been accepted yet. Rodriguez said that's out of his hands. 'We have Kannon, who has come in and is really working hard,' Porter said. 'Hubbard, who was here last year that we think that has a tremendous amount of talent, but he's still working there, trying to find himself as we work into fall camp. Then you have Clay Ash, who's a steady hand, always worked hard that we're very happy to have.' It might've been a rough second practice, but they are slowly improving each day, and are all fighting for a starting spot in Rodriguez's offense. Like the quarterbacks, Rodriguez will play as many running backs as there are players he 'can win with.' He's still trying to find who those players are. 'Get to that point where we got to play you because you're good enough to win with,' Rodriguez said. 'I'm hoping there's more than two at every position. I don't know if we'll be that. Right now, for the next couple of weeks everyone is getting reps, and it'll be quality reps, and they are going to get a really good chance to show if they've learned, and if they can help us win or not.'

Illini star J.C. Davis rising up the draft boards at left tackle
As New Year's Eve, and with it the Citrus Bowl, drew near Illinois Head Coach Bret Bielema discussed how he spent his Christmas Eve. He was in Oakland, California, convincing his starting left tackle, J.C. Davis to come play in the bowl game. It wasn't until January 4, five days after the Citrus Bowl that the announcement came of Davis having eligibility to return in 2025. After 2024 ended, Davis was seeking an additional year of eligibility, and it came via the NCAA granting a blanket waiver to former junior college transfers. Davis spent his first year in college (2021) at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, California. He then transferred to New Mexico, where he earned All-Mountain West honorable mention in 2022 and then All-Mountain West first team the next season. He then transferred again, this time to Champaign, where he started all 13 games at left tackle for the Illini last season, earning the team's newcomer of the year award. He was also All-Big Ten third team, according to the coaches vote. Bielema's yuletide recruiting efforts paid off handsomely, as Davis allowed zero pressures in Illinois' win over #14 South Carolina in the Citrus Bowl. The bowl game victory broke new barriers for the program, as Davis came up huge against a powerful Gamecocks front seven. His performance in Orlando saw him registering the 7th highest pass-blocking grade for any tackle (minimum 40 snaps) during the postseason period. That's according to Pro Football Focus, who scored him an 87.6 for the New Year's bowl. The dominant performance turned in by the 6-5, 320 pound behemoth landed him on the AP All-Bowl Team. And the emphatic statement he made in closing out 2024 has vaulted his prospects for 2025. With his "additional" and final season, Davis has a chance to be dominant, and with it, get selected in the 2026 NFL Draft. As a left tackle, he plays a position that NFL teams lace a premium on, and thus has plenty of inherent draft stock. It also helps that the program he plays at has been producing plenty of draft picks lately. On Tuesday, he was one of just 16 OTs named to the preseason watch list for the 2025 Outland Trophy, which honors the nation's best interior lineman. The list was composed by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). Davis brings a lot to the table, especially durability, reliability and consistency. He's made 37 consecutive starts across his last two schools, and 2,357 career snaps at left tackle. He's allowed just two sacks in his last 25 games (1,462 snaps). He's a prospect rising up the board of 2026 LTs.
