Hydroponic Weed Worth Rs 33.35 Crore Seized At Mumbai Airport, 8 Arrested
Mumbai Customs has seized 33.35 kilograms of hydroponic weed valued at Rs 33.35 crore over three days, leading to the arrest of eight persons in six cases, officials have said.
Hydroponic cultivation is the method of growing plants with mineral nutrient solutions in a water-based solvent rather than soil.
Those arrested comprise seven passengers and a receiver responsible for collecting the contraband in one case, they said on Thursday.
Since July 8, the Airport Commissionerate of Mumbai Customs has launched a special operation to crack down on drug trafficking by passengers at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), an official said.
In the first case, a traveller was apprehended in the early hours of Wednesday with 5.024 kg of hydroponic weed, hidden inside vacuum-sealed black and transparent plastic packets kept inside the trolley bag, an official said.
"In another case, hydroponic weed worth Rs 2.425 crore was seized, and a passenger was arrested. On Wednesday, a passenger arriving from Bangkok was held with 2.481 kg of suspected hydroponic weed worth Rs 2.481 crore. On the same day, two passengers arriving from Bangkok were held with 11.891 kg of suspected hydroponic weed worth Rs 11.891 crore," he said.
The narcotic substance was cleverly concealed inside the checked-in trolley bag carried by the passengers, both of whom were arrested under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he said.
"In addition to these two passengers, a person who came to receive the contraband was held from the rickshaw parking lot outside the airport. In two more cases, 11 kilograms of the narcotic substance, valued at Rs 11 crore, was seized from two passengers," the official informed.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had said in the legislative council last week that 'hydro' ganja was proving to be a big challenge for the government and asserted that the Centre and state had intensified their fight against the drug business.
On Wednesday, the Maharashtra assembly passed a bill to bring drug peddlers and narcotics crimes under the purview of the stringent anti-organised crime law MCOCA.

Rave party busted in Hyderabad's Kondapur; 9 people arrested, 2 absconding
Nine people were arrested on Saturday night for allegedly planning to organise a rave party at an apartment in Kondapur area of Hyderabad. Based on intelligence inputs, the Prohibition and Excise Department's State Task Force conducted a route watch and busted the drugs party in Kondapur area. Meanwhile, Pune Police arrested seven persons after busting a "drug party" following a raid at an apartment on Sunday and seized narcotics, hookah set ups and liquor. The raid was conducted around 3.30 AM on Sunday and a "drug party" was busted at the studio apartment, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Nikhil Pingle said at a press conference. During the raid and subsequent search, the police seized 2.7 grams of a cocaine-like substance, 70 gm of a ganja-like substance, a hookah pot, various hookah flavours, and liquor and beer bottles, Pingle said. Pranjal Khewalkar, the husband of former Maharashtra minister Eknath Khadse's daughter Rohini Khadse, was among those arrested. "We have arrested seven individuals, identified as Pranjal Khewalkar, Nikhil Poptani, Sameer Sayyad, Shripad Yadav, Sachin Bhombe, Isha Singh and Prachi Sharma, under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act," the DCP said.

Chhattisgarh: 4 Maoists killed in Bijapur encounter; security forces recover arms and ammunition
In a significant counter-insurgency operation success, four reward-carrying Maoists were killed during a prolonged encounter with security forces in the dense forest region of Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh, the police said on Sunday. The operation, launched by the District Reserve Guard (DRG) on July 26, was based on specific intelligence inputs regarding Maoist activity near the Basaguda and Gangaloor police station limits in the district's south-western corridor. The gunfight began in the evening and continued intermittently through the night. Among the deceased were two women cadres, all affiliated with the South Sub Zonal Bureau of the banned CPI (Maoist), said the official. The slain insurgents were identified as Hunga (ACM, Platoon 10), Lakkhe (ACM, Platoon 30), Bhime (ACM), and Nihal alias Rahul, a party member and bodyguard to the Bureau Communication Head. Collectively, they carried a bounty of Rs 17 lakh. Security personnel recovered a substantial cache of arms and ammunition from the site, including one SLR rifle, one INSAS rifle, one .303 rifle, a 12 bore gun, a BGL launcher, a single-shot 315 bore rifle, and an AK-47. In addition, multiple magazines, live rounds, grenades, BGL cells, Maoist literature, and daily-use items were seized. Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P. confirmed that the operation was part of an intensified anti-LWE campaign in the region. He noted that 425 hardcore Maoists have been neutralised between January 2024 and July 2025, attributing the success to strategic planning, operational courage, and community support. Despite challenging monsoon conditions -- marked by rugged terrain, dense foliage, and persistent rainfall -- security forces maintained high morale and operational readiness. The encounter underscores the state's continued efforts to dismantle Maoist strongholds and restore civil order in insurgency-hit zones. The operation remains on-going, with forces maintaining heightened alert across the Bastar division, which has historically been a hotbed of left-wing extremism.

Pune: Police say will probe source of drugs, accused lawyer claims bid to frame
The seven accused arrested over alleged drug seizure from an apartment in Pune, where they were allegedly partying, were remanded in police custody till July 29. Dr Pranjal Khewalkar, husband of a prominent NCP (SP) leader Rohini Khadse and son-in law of former Maharashtra minister Eknath Khadse, was among the seven accused remanded by the court of judicial magistrate (first class) N S Bari. Police told the court that they want to investigate the source of the contraband seized and added the two of the accused had prior criminal records. Khewalkar's lawyer Vijaysinh Thombre raised doubts that police may have planted the contraband seized in this case for 'political' reasons. According to the police, they raided apartment number 102 of the Staybird Azure Suite building in Kharadi around 3.20 am. Police sources said that Khewalkar had booked the apartment days in his name. During the raid, police 2.7 grams of substance suspected to be cocaine, 70 grams of substances suspected to be marijuana. Police said Dr Khewalkar was found at the spot along with cigarette trader Nikhil Jethanand Poptani (35) of DSK Sundarban, who was booked in an online cricket betting racket case registered at Kondhwa police station in May 2023. Construction businessman Shripad Mohan Yadav (27) of Akurdi, was earlier booked in three criminal cases of gambling, cheating and allegedly causing hurt to a government servant on duty, was also among the accused who were present at the spot. Four others including a hardware businessman Sameer Fakir Mohammed Sayyed (41) of NIBM Road, a private company employee Sachin Sonaji Bhombe (42) of Wagholi, and two women Isha Devjyot Singh (22) of Aundh and Prachi Gopal Sharma (23) from Mahalunge, who were present at the spot, police said. Seeking the police custody of the accused for seven days, Assistant public prosecutor Priyanka Vengurlekar argued that 2.7 grams of cocaine, which is an 'intermediate quatity' of drugs, was seized from the accused. Investigation is being done to know from where the contraband was purchased, she said. Police said a probe was on to know the main accused in this case and investigate whether any accused have links with any inter-state drug smuggling racket. Police also told the court they want to investigate the accused on why three rooms in 'Staybird' were booked from July 25 to July 28. Police said interrogation of the accused was required for searching three persons who are known to have visited the hotel premises. Police are also probing the role of two women arrested in this case. Meanwhile, during the argument prosecution lawyer Vengurlekar called it a case of 'rave party', to which defence lawyers told the court that it cannot be termed so. Defence lawyer Thombre argued that drugs were neither consumed by Khewalkar nor recovered from his possession, so the charges against him under NDPS Act are false and made with political purposes. During his arguments, Thombre claimed that police may have planted the drugs to frame Khewalkar. Lawyers representing other accused argued their police custody was not essential.
