Padres Involved In Trade Rumors Surrounding $15.5 Million Ace

The San Diego Padres could look to add another starting pitcher to their roster this season, especially if they can find one with team control on his contract. Padres pitchers Michael King and Dylan Cease are both set to become free agents at the end of the season.
Either way, adding a starting pitcher would set up the Padres to close the gap on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West, too.
CBS Sports' R.J. Anderson recently listed the Padres as a potential landing spot for Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta if the Brewers opt to trade him.
MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - JUNE 08: Freddy Peralta #51 of the Milwaukee Brewers throws a pitch in the first inning against the San Diego Padres at American Family Field on June 08, 2025 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin....
MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - JUNE 08: Freddy Peralta #51 of the Milwaukee Brewers throws a pitch in the first inning against the San Diego Padres at American Family Field on June 08, 2025 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. More"While conventional wisdom suggests Peralta, the best starter on a playoff-caliber team, should remain in place, I think there's reason to include him, if only just in case. Peralta's name has populated the rumor mill dating back to the offseason before last, when the Brewers traded Corbin Burnes," Anderson wrote. "He's now under contract for just one more season, suggesting a move is probably coming at some point before Opening Day 2026.
"The Brewers, who could have more healthy starters than spots by the time the deadline arrives, have shown in the past that they're willing to operate in a counterculture manner if the right opportunity presents itself. (Remember the Josh Hader trade?) Given the expected state of the market, Peralta could be the top available starter, creating the possibility that the Brewers could leverage other clubs to net an impressive return."
This is the perfect trade idea for the Padres. It would bring them an ace to replace King and Cease if the duo leaves in free agency. It would also bring them an ace to help steal the NL West from the Dodgers.
The only issue with this trade idea is how little prospect capital the Padres have to trade with. San Diego's top two or three prospects are expected to be untouchable at the trade deadline. Following those prospects, they might not have the ability to land a trade for Peralta.

Max Muncy out six weeks with knee injury in Dodgers crusher

Max Muncy appears to have avoided the worst with his scary knee injury, but the Dodgers star third baseman will still miss significant time. Muncy, 34, told reporters Thursday he will be out about six weeks with a bone bruise he suffered in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the White Sox and that a MRI exam revealed no structural damage to his knee. 'It was obviously amazing hearing the news that nothing was torn, nothing was ripped,' he said. 'That was obviously a huge sigh of relief for me, but it still sounds like too long of a time in my head.' Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy injured his knee in a collision with White Sox center fielder Michael A. Taylor. Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images The two-time All-Star got hurt in a collision at third base with White Sox center fielder Michael A. Taylor, who was sliding into the bag in an attempted steal. Muncy tagged out Taylor, but the third baseman's knee caught Taylor's helmet and he sprawled over in pain. A Dodgers trainer was ultimately sent out to help Muncy off of the field. 'It was tough news, but it was also great news in terms of when you look at the play and just the injury that could have happened,' Muncy said. Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw was just one strikeout away from the 3,000th of his career at the time of Muncy's injury, punching out White Sox utility player Vinny Capra to secure the milestone moments later. Max Muncy is hitting .250 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs for the Dodgers this year. Peter Aiken-Imagn Images 'The first thought that was really going through my head was as I'm laying on the ground was, 'Dang, I have to make Kersh sit there and think about stuff right now.' I really was not happy about that,' Muncy said. 'I'm in the X-ray room and heard the crowd roar and I was kind of like, 'Man, missed it.' Honestly, that was the most heartbreaking thing to me.' Muncy is currently batting .250 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs this season for the Dodgers who hold a 55-32 record, good for an 8.5-game lead on the second-place Padres in the NL West.

Mets top Brewers 3-2 behind Nimmo, Soto and Peterson

NEW YORK (AP) — Brandon Nimmo homered again, Juan Soto came through with a tiebreaking single and the New York Mets held off the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 on Thursday night. David Peterson (6-4) rebounded from a pair of rough starts, tossing 6 2/3 effective innings to give New York's injury-ravaged rotation a much-needed boost. Advertisement Pete Alonso added an RBI double as the Mets took two of three from Milwaukee — just as they did in their Wild Card Series during the National League playoffs last October. Next stop, the second Subway Series of the season against the crosstown-rival New York Yankees. Fans in the sellout crowd of 42,241 received replica Soto jerseys on Fireworks Night, and the $765 million slugger gave New York a 2-1 lead in the sixth when he grounded an RBI single off hard-luck loser Jose Quintana (6-3), who spent the past two seasons with the Mets. Alonso then drove the first pitch from reliever Nick Mears off the left-center fence for a double that made it 3-1. Advertisement Andruw Monasterio hit his first homer this year off Peterson in the seventh, but the Mets hung on for their second consecutive victory after losing 14 of 17. Ryne Stanek got four straight outs, ending the eighth with a primal scream after striking out all three batters in the inning. Edwin Díaz fanned two in a scoreless ninth for his 18th save in 19 opportunities. Nimmo, who hit a grand slam Wednesday night off Brewers rookie sensation Jacob Misiorowski, connected for a solo shot in the second to put New York in front. Caleb Durbin tied it with a run-scoring infield single in the fourth. The first pitch was delayed 37 minutes by rain. Advertisement Key moment Díaz gave up a one-out single in the ninth to pinch-hitter Christian Yelich, who then got caught stealing. Yelich was initially ruled safe at second base before the call was overturned following a replay review. Key stat Soto, the NL player of the month for June, began the night batting only .145 with runners in scoring position. Up next Milwaukee RHP Quinn Priester (6-2, 3.35 ERA) starts Friday night in Miami against RHP Sandy Alcantara (4-8, 6.98), the 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner. The Mets were undecided on a starter for their Subway Series opener against the Yankees at Citi Field. ___ AP MLB: Mike Fitzpatrick, The Associated Press
