Who are the BJP's 9 new state chiefs? Ravindra Chavan to PVN Madhav

Mint02-07-2025
The Bharatiya Janata Party is on a spree of electing presidents of its state units—a process that will lead to the election of the saffron party's new national president, replacing JP Nadda.
Since its internal polls started last year, the party has elected as many as nine new state heads and held elections for 28 states and union territories.
However, the election of the national president will be conducted only after the successful completion of elections in key states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Delhi, and Haryana, among others.
Here are nine new state presidents of the BJP:
A four-term MLA from Dombivali, Ravindra Chavan replaced Chandrashekhar Bawankule as Maharashtra BJP president. Chavan has been a minister in the state too and has held several key portfolios, including Public Works, Food and Civil Supplies, and Consumer Protection, in the Maharashtra government.
Chavan, 54, who was appointed Working President of the BJP Maharashtra unit in January, is also seen as a close aide of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and has strong backing from the RSS.
Chavan's appointment as the state BJP chief in Maharashtra is seen as a strategic move ahead of key local body elections in Mumbai.
Former MLC N Ramchander Rao has been elected as the new President of Bharatiya Janata Party's Telangana unit. Rao, 66, replaces Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy, who was elected as the BJP's state unit president in July 2023, replacing Bandi Sanjay Kumar.
A senior lawyer in the Supreme Court, Rao has also served as the chief spokesperson and General Secretary of the BJP in undivided Andhra Pradesh.
From 2015 to 2021, Rao was a Member of the Telangana Legislative Council(MLC) for Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, and Mahabubnagar Graduates' Constituency. He was also in charge of the Bharatiya Janata Party's membership drive in Telangana.
Hemant Khandelwal, the newly elected President of Madhya Pradesh, is an MLA from Betul. Khandelwal has also been an MP from Betul, which was won by his father, late Vijay Khandelwal, four times (1996-2008).
Khandelwal, 60, is said to have strong roots in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the BJP's ideological mentor. He is also known to be close to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
Khandelwal's election to the top post signals the BJP's outreach to the strong Vaishya community in Madhya Pradesh and its balancing act as the state now has Other Backward Class (OBC) chief minister and an upper-caste state president.
Rajeev Bindal has been re-elected for a third straight term as the president of the BJP's Himachal Pradesh unit. Bindal, 70, is a veteran BJP face and a five-time MLA from the hill state.
He also served as the health minister in the Prem Kumar Dhumal-led BJP government from 2007 to 2012. Bindal has also been speaker of the Himachal Pradesh assembly from 2018 to 2020.
A doctor by profession, Bindal served in Jharkhand under RSS's Vanvasi Kalyan Parishad.
Bindal is said to be a close aide of JP Nadda, who also comes from Himachal Pradesh.
BJP's new Andhra Pradesh chief, PVN Madhav, will focus on strengthening the party's presence in the ruling NDA coalition in the state, which is allied with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and the Janasena party led by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan.
Madhav is stepping into his father's shoes. PV Chalapati Rao, Madhav's father, was the first BJP state president of undivided Andhra Pradesh.
Madhav, 51, is a former Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) and had roles in Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and RSS-affiliated organisations. He has also been the general secretary of the Andhra Pradesh BJP.
Mahendra Bhatt, 53, the Uttarakhand chief of the BJP, is a Rajya Sabha MP who has been re-elected for the top post.
He first took over as Uttarakhand BJP chief in 2022. Bhatt is the only party chief in the hill state to get a successive term in 25 years.
Bhatt is a two-time MLA who began his political career with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in the early 1990s. He has also been the BJP Yuva Morcha's state president.
With Pushkar Singh Dhami, a Thakur, as chief minister, the BJP has balanced the caste equation by appointing Bhatt, a Brahmin as the party's state president.
The saffron party has elected Anil Tiwari as the new president of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands unit. Tiwari, who joined the BJP in 1990, is known for his strong roots in the RSS.
In the past, Tiwari has served as the state secretary of the BJP in the Island.
In Puducherry UT, the BJP has picked VP Ramalingam, brother of former Congress leader VP Sivakolundhu, as its new president.
Ramalingam, 63, is a businessman who joined the BJP in 2021 when he was then nominated as an MLA following the formation of the AINRC-BJP coalition government.
The BJP picked K Beichhua, a three-time MLA from Siaha, to lead its party unitin Mizoram in the northeast,
Beichhua, 59, has served as a doctor for 16 years and was elected to the assembly from Siaha on a Mizo National Front (MNF) ticket for two consecutive terms in 2013 and 2018.
Dr Beichhua joined the BJP in 2023 after his January 2023 expulsion from the MNF. He won the seat. Dr Beichhua is one of the two BJP MLAs in the current 40-member Mizoram assembly.
Dr Beichhua has been a minister holding various portfolios, including Excise and Narcotics, in the previous MNF government headed by Zoramthanga.

Mamata Banerjee likely to make ‘Bengali pride' the centrepiece of Trinamool's poll pitch at Martyrs' Day rally today

As the political situation in West Bengal simmers, Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee will address the Shaheed Diwas (Martyrs' Day) rally in Kolkata on Monday, setting the tone for the high-voltage campaign for the Assembly election that is less than a year away. From the stage in the heart of Kolkata, Banerjee is expected to take on the BJP on the issue of 'Bengali ashmita (pride)' and detention of Bengali-speaking migrants in various states. In recent weeks, a political storm has been brewing in Bengal, with the CM alleging that Bengali-speaking migrants in BJP-ruled states are being subjected to linguistic profiling in the name of national security and detained. The BJP has countered this, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying at a public meeting in Durgapur in Paschim Bardhaman district last Friday that the TMC is 'actively helping infiltrators' and hindering the state's development through corruption and violence. The PM insisted that 'Bengali pride' was 'supreme' for his party. 'Wherever there is a BJP government, Bengalis are respected,' he said. From the stage in Dharmatala, Banerjee is expected to respond to this specifically and the PM's other comments broadly, and present a roadmap to the Assembly election battle next year. TMC leaders believe the gist of her speech at the biggest event on the party's annual calendar will be raising the pitch on the detention of Bengali-speaking migrants to paint the party as one at odds with the interests of Bengalis. This is a strategy that helped the TMC post a commanding win in the 2021 Assembly polls. Like last year, the CM is also expected to send a message to her party workers and leaders on the importance of maintaining a clean image and working transparently. In 2024, both the TMC chief and her nephew and de facto second-in-command, Abhishek Banerjee, had urged party workers to be 'more polite and humble' and not do anything wrong. 'We will not tolerate any injustice,' the CM had said in a signal to party strongmen. With questions being raised about the law-and-order situation in the state following the rape and murder of a doctor at R G Kar Medical College last year, communal violence in Murshidabad in April, and an alleged rape at a law college in Kolkata last month, the TMC government is under pressure, and there will be intense scrutiny in the lead-up to the election. 'Mamata Banerjee has raised her voice against the humiliation meted out to Bengali-speaking migrant workers in some BJP-ruled states. It is obvious that in the next election, 'Bangali ashmita (pride)' will be the prime electoral agenda, along with the Centre's stepmotherly attitude towards Bengal. Also, Didi will call for maintaining communal harmony in the state. Above all, she and Abhishek will set the tone for the Assembly election campaign,' said a senior TMC leader who did not wish to be named. 'The CM may also raise the issue of corruption allegations and other serious accusations against party leaders. She has not publicly spoken about the alleged rape at the law college and may again send out a signal to the party rank-and-file that such things won't be tolerated,' said another TMC leader. The Leader of the Opposition in the state, Suvendu Adhikari, meanwhile, will lead a protest march to Uttar Kanya, the branch of the secretariat in Siliguri in north Bengal, on Monday. For years, the July 21 rally has been the TMC's launchpad for its annual political agenda. It is held to commemorate the police firing on Youth Congress workers on July 21, 1993, in which 13 people were killed. The Youth Congress, then led by Banerjee, had organised the march to protest against alleged vote rigging by the then Left Front government and to demand that photo voter IDs be made mandatory to ensure fair voting. From the following year, the Congress began to mark July 21 as 'Shaheed Diwas'. When Banerjee left the party along with a large section of the state Congress to launch the TMC in 1998, the new party carried on the tradition. After the 2011 Assembly election win, Banerjee held her victory rally at the Brigade Parade Ground on July 21. It was the only time she held the rally at a place other than Dharmatala, the usual site of the public meeting.

Today in Politics: All eyes on Parliament as Monsoon Session set to commence

The government on Sunday told an all-party meeting that it is ready to discuss all issues raised by the Opposition in the Monsoon session of Parliament, which will commence on Monday, while asserting that it will respond appropriately to demands for a response on US President Donald Trump's claims on Operation Sindoor. At the customary meeting ahead of the session beginning Monday, the opposition raised various issues, including voter roll revision in Bihar, the Pahalgam terror attack and Trump's 'ceasefire' claims. The government sought coordination with the opposition in the smooth running of the month-long session. There should be govt-opposition coordination in running Parliament smoothly, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told reporters after the meeting. He said the government will respond appropriately in Parliament on opposition raising the issue of Trump's claims on Operation Sindoor. The government, he emphasised, is open to discussing all issues in Parliament in line with rules and traditions and asserted that the government was very much open to discussing important issues like Operation Sindoor. Talking to reporters after the meeting, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said his party sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement on Trump's claims, 'lapses' which led to the Pahalgam attack and Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of poll rolls in Bihar. The Monsoon Session of Parliament will also see the introduction of eight new bills by the central government. The Income-Tax Bill, 2025 is the government's top priority and was presented to the Lok Sabha on February 13 during the Budget Session of Parliament. TMC's Martyrs' Day rally With an eye on the Assembly polls next year, the TMC is gearing up to turn its annual Martyrs' Day rally into a powerful platform to sharpen its Bengali pride narrative and hit out at the BJP over the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants. Monday's rally in Kolkata's Esplanade is expected to see Trinamool Congress supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issue a clarion call to her party workers, reiterating her message that 'Bengalis are not second-class citizens in their own country'. 'Time and again, poor Bengali-speaking workers are being picked up, harassed, and branded as illegal infiltrators. The BJP is criminalising poverty and weaponising identity to harass the marginalised,' a senior TMC leader told PTI. The TMC has accused the BJP of resorting to 'linguistic othering' and has sought to reignite the emotional chord of regional identity that helped it counter the BJP's Hindutva wave during the 2021 assembly polls. 'Dignity, identity, and survival are at stake. BJP is out to erase Bengali self-respect under the garb of nationalism. Our fight is not just electoral-it's existential,' said a TMC MP. The BJP, on the other hand, has pushed back strongly. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his recent rally in Durgapur, accused the TMC of promoting infiltration and endangering national security for vote-bank politics. 'It is the BJP that truly protects Bengali 'ashmita',' Modi had said, as he projected the BJP as the only credible alternative in Bengal. Ashim Ghosh to take oath as Haryana Governor Haryana's Governor-designate Ashim Ghosh will take oath of office in a ceremony at the Raj Bhavan here on Monday. He will succeed Bandaru Dattatraya. The new Governor will be administered the oath of office by the Punjab and Haryana High Court's Chief Justice Sheel Nagu. According to an official communique, the appointment will take effect from the date he assumes charge of office. Once a towering yet soft-spoken presence in Bengal BJP's formative years, Ghosh (81), a scholar with a sharp political mind, has made a surprise return to national relevance, over two decades after retreating from the daily bustle of active politics. 'It's a matter of great honour for me, and I would try to perform my duties with utmost sincerity. I will work with dedication to serve the people of Haryana,' the 81-year-old had told reporters in Kolkata on July 14. His elevation as governor is being seen as both an acknowledgement of his long political journey and a gesture of respect toward the older generation of BJP leaders who built the party's foundations in West Bengal, where it long remained marginal. – With PTI inputs

Rupali Ganguly Hits Back After TMC Leader Nilanjan Das Tags Her A ‘Flop Actress'

Last Updated: Rupali Ganguly, Anupamaa star, defended her right to question leaders after TMC's Nilanjan Das called her a "flop soap actress" for criticizing West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. Television actor and Anupamaa star Rupali Ganguly has issued a strong response after facing criticism from Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Nilanjan Das. The latter had referred to her as a 'flop soap actress" on social media. The comment followed Rupali's remarks about West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's recent post concerning political issues in Assam. The exchange began when Mamata Banerjee shared a statement on X (formerly Twitter), addressing the BJP's actions in Assam. Rupali, who is known for being vocal on social and political matters, questioned the Chief Minister's priorities, urging her to look into the state of affairs in West Bengal instead. 'Before shedding crocodile tears for Bengalis in other states, Mamata Didi must answer who will protect Bengalis in West Bengal itself? From Sandeshkhali to Murshidabad, the only atrocities on Bengalis are happening under her watch. Bengal has never been more unsafe for its own people," she wrote. The post drew a sharp reaction from TMC leader Nilanjan Das, who replied, 'The seniormost stateswoman of India doesn't need lectures from a flop soap actress (sic)." The comment did not go unnoticed. Rupali responded firmly, defending her right to question public leaders and highlighting what she described as an undemocratic attitude. 'Isn't your so-called 'senior-most stateswoman' a public servant, or she's a dictator who can't be questioned? But if you've already accepted her tyranny instead of her duty to the people, then congratulations on embracing dictatorship. Classic TMC behaviour," she replied.
