Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi , on Saturday took a swipe at the government over its handling of trade negotiations with the United States, claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would "meekly bow" to Washington's tariff deadlines.His comments came a day after Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal declared that India does not enter into trade agreements under time pressure or external deadlines.Quoting a media report on the ongoing India-US trade discussions, Gandhi posted on X: 'Piyush Goyal can beat his chest all he wants, mark my words, Modi will meekly bow to the Trump tariff deadline .'Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal had on Friday stated that India's trade policy is rooted in national interest and guided by the principle of mutual benefit."It should be a win-win agreement, and only when India's interests are safeguarded — national interest will always be supreme — and keeping that in mind, if a good deal is formed, India is always ready to engage with developed countries," Goyal said on the sidelines of the 16th Toy Biz B2B Expo in New Delhi.Reiterating India's consistent approach to trade talks, Goyal added, 'India never enters into trade deals based on deadlines or time pressure. A deal is accepted only when it is fully matured, well-negotiated, and in the national interest.'The minister confirmed that India is in discussions with several countries including the United States, the European Union, New Zealand, Oman, Chile, and Peru. However, he maintained that the mere number of negotiations underway does not imply haste."A Free Trade Agreement is only possible when there is mutual benefit," he said.Addressing the Toy Biz Expo , Goyal also praised the progress of India's toy manufacturing industry . He said, 'I am sure with the high quality goods I am seeing here, they will all be finding good market with the whole Gulf region, all the six countries of the Middle East, as they are today finding in nearly 153 countries in the world.'He added that the government is planning more support for the sector: 'We will soon be coming out also with the support program and incentive scheme to support the toy industry.'Highlighting India's domestic demand, Goyal said, 'Considering that we have a market of 1.4 billion Indians who would like to use toys. At every age, there is a demand of toys.'He called the toy sector 'a growing sector which have eyes on the world,' underlining both its export and domestic potential.

Logically, Britain's largest fact-checking company started by an India-born entrepreneur that once had assignments from Indian, UK and US govts as well as social media giants, has gone into 'administration' -- a legal process where a debt-defaulting firm seeks court protection to restructure and avoid liquidation. One of the key reasons why Logically, founded by Lyric Jain in 2017, folded up was social media giants moving away from AI-enabled fact checking. Meta and TikTok did not renew their contracts this year. Pressure on social media giants to fact-check has eased since US President Donald Trump took charge the second time early this year. Logically's assets have been transferred to another company called Kreatur as part of the 'administration' process. Jain had founded Logically with backing from private investors. He had moved to the UK from Mysore at age 12. The company's clients included US federal agencies, India's Election Commission, Mumbai police, Karnataka, J&K and Assam govts. It also worked for Britain's counter-disinformation unit during the pandemic and on debunking disinformation ahead of 2020 US elections. When TikTok's contract came up for renewal they offered a paltry amount not sufficient for running the technology. So, they went their separate ways. Meta did not renew because it was moving towards community-led fact checkers,' a source close to Logically told TOI. Around the same time, the firm lost certification from International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), allegedly because the industry body does not allow fact-checkers to work for govts. UK's The Times newspaper claimed Logically being hired by Karnataka govt in early 2024 to set up a fact-checking unit to parse misinformation ahead of the Lok Sabha elections last summer led to the firm losing its certification. However, a source contested that version. 'Karnataka govt did a proof of concept contract with Logically but nothing has happened ever since. IFCN does not have a monopoly on fact-checking,' the source said. The same source disputed claims about Logically 'losing' certification. 'We didn't renew it. Fact-checking with platforms was not an attractive business. Logically was gradually winding up that side of business to focus on corporate and govt customers for information advantage and providing competitive intelligence,' the source said. A spokesperson for Kreatur, to which Logically's assets have been channelled, confirmed the move. 'Kreatur Ltd has acquired Logically's core technology, brand, and key assets as part of a pre-pack administration process. The transaction ensures continuity for all customers and has preserved over 50 full-time roles,' the spokesperson said.

The Congress party on Sunday slammed BJP Lok Sabha MP from Mandi, Kangana Ranaut, after she paid a visit to her rain-ravaged constituency and said that she does not have any official Cabinet to provide disaster relief. Terming the remarks by the actor-politician 'insensitive", the Congress opined that Kangana should show sensitivity to the situation in Himachal Pradesh and those affected by floods and landslides. In an X post, the Congress shared a byte by Kangana and wrote, 'In Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, a cloudburst has caused massive destruction. People are distressed, their everything has been ruined." RAIN WREAKS HAVOC IN HIMACHAL Fourteen people have died, and a search is on for 31 missing, as cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides caused massive destruction. More than 150 houses, 106 cattle sheds, 31 vehicles, 14 bridges, and several roads suffered damage in the disaster. A total of 164 cattle have perished. About 200 roads have been rendered out of bounds for traffic, while 236 transformers and 278 supply schemes have been disrupted in Mandi district as of Sunday morning, according to the state emergency operation centre.

The 11 emerging nations, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa account for about half the world's population and 40 percent of global economic output. The bloc is divided about much, but found common cause when it comes to the mercurial US leader and his stop-start tariff wars -- even if it avoided naming him directly. In an indirect swipe at the U.S., the group's declaration raised 'serious concerns' about the rise of tariffs which it said were 'inconsistent with WTO (World Trade Organization) rules.' The BRICS added that those restrictions 'threaten reduce global trade, disrupt global supply chains, and introduce uncertainty.' The group's declaration, which also took aim at Israel's military actions in the Middle East, also spared its member Russia from criticism and mentioned war-torn Ukraine just once. The two-day summit was marked by the absences of two of its most powerful members. China's President Xi Jinping did not attend a BRICS summit for the first time since he became his country's leader in 2012. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who spoke via videoconference, continues to mostly avoid traveling abroad due to an international arrest warrant issued after Russia invaded Ukraine. Earlier, BRICS also offered symbolic backing to fellow member Iran, condemning a series of military strikes on nuclear and other targets carried out by Israel and the United States. In his speech, Iran's Foreign Minister Araghchi told leaders he had pushed for every member of the United Nations to condemn Israel strongly. He added Israel and the U.S. should be accountable for rights violations. The Iranian foreign minister said the aftermath of the war 'will not be limited' to one country. 'The entire region and beyond will be damaged,' Araghchi said. BRICS leaders also expressed 'grave concern' for the humanitarian situation in Gaza, called for the release of all hostages, a return to the negotiating table and reaffirmed their commitment to the two-state solution.
