ITV axes crime thriller Joan after one series - here's why

Joan (series one), which aired on ITV back in 2024, is based on the true story of "notorious" 80s jewellery thief Joan Hannington (played by Turner).
The six-episode series was a hit with viewers, with millions tuning in to watch.
Fans of the show have been eagerly awaiting a second season.
One person, posting on Reddit group r/BritishTV, said: "I have just finished watching Joan, the real life story of diamond thief Joan Hannington.
"I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written mini series. Is there going to be a season 2?"
Another added: "Loved it. As someone who was in London in the 80s I thought that this was so well put together.
"The depiction and atmosphere of the time and the city was really well done. Story good, actors good. Would watch a second series."
While a third fan, posting on X (formerly Twitter), commented: "Just watched #Joan … now I want Series 2 already @itv."

However, ITV has now confirmed Joan has been scrapped after just one series due to cast availability.
An ITV spokesperson said: "ITV and Snowed-In Productions would love to produce another series of Joan.
"However, as a consequence of cast availability and following co-production discussions it has meant a second series wasn't possible."
You can watch all episodes of Joan, series one, now on ITVX.

ITV previously said: 'TOWIE and RHOCH join a rich schedule of returning formats, including Love Island and Big Brother, and exciting new commissions which are lined up throughout the remainder of 2025 on ITV2, and will continue to stream on ITVX.
'As the flagship commissions move across to their ITV2 broadcast home, ITV will retire the ITVBe brand from its portfolio in June 2025.
'ITV plans to use the channel slot as ITV Quiz, drawing on ITV's popular, market-leading UK quiz and game shows, and the success and learnings of ITVX FAST channels.'
ITVBe+1 (Channel 93) was also shut down early this month (July 16), as part of the latest Freeview update.

Emmerdale characters to celebrate Lionesses' Euro 2025 win in special scene

At the start of Monday's episode of the ITV soap, Bob Hope (Tony Audenshaw) will be seen chatting with Mary Goskirk (Louise Jameson) about the football match, which saw the Lionesses draw 1-1 with Spain, before winning on penalties in Basel, Switzerland. Emmerdale producer, Laura Shaw, said: 'With the nation getting behind the Lionesses, we knew the fictional characters in Emmerdale would've been doing just the same so it felt right and proper that we should reflect this result on the show.' Viewers will also see the celebrations at the Woolpack after the characters gathered in the pub to watch the match, with the scene being a last-minute addition following Sunday's final. Last year, Cain (Jeff Hordley) and Moira Dingle (Natalie Robb) were seen chatting about the men's Euro 2024 final in an added scene, with an England flag hanging in the window behind them. The men's team went on to lose their final, which was also against Spain, 2-1. Sunday's game saw England fall behind in the 25th minute after Mariona Caldentey scored for Spain, before Alessia Russo equalised for England in the 57th minute, taking the game to extra time and eventually penalties, where winger Chloe Kelly scored the winning spot kick. The result comes after the Lionesses first won the tournament in front of a home crowd in 2022, defeating Germany 2-1 after extra time. A Downing Street reception for the team will take place on Monday hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and sports minister Stephanie Peacock, while the Lionesses will also embark on an open-top bus parade in central London on Tuesday. Emmerdale airs at 7.30pm on week nights on ITV1 and STV, or from 7.00am on ITVX and STV Player.

Kelly was understandably ecstatic after coming back from behind thanks to Alessia Russo's header, which forced the match to extra time and, eventually, a penalty shootout victory. But her emotions got the better of her in a post-match interview on the pitch, with her X-rated choice of language forcing ITV to cut away and apologise to audiences. Kelly said: "This team is made of magic and it's made of steel. The pressure of any tournament deciding penalty is huge, but all the more so for Kelly, who saw her penalty against Italy saved earlier in the week, before following it in to tap home the rebound. The title win makes them the first England team, male or female, to win a major international tournament on foreign soil. It also marked three straight Euros titles for manager Wiegman, with the last tournament not won by the Dutch tactician taking place in 2013. Kelly added: "[We are] History makers once again with an unbelievable manager behind us. "Unbelievable team behind us in the staff members, every single one of them. "And the fans, they've been incredible the whole tournament. "I'm so proud to be English." After initially cutting her off, the broadcast did return to Kelly for one last comment. Kelly signed off with an inspiring statement to the next generation of football stars. She said: "Every girl out there with that dream - you can do it, keep shooting for the stars."

Coronation Street actress lands part in rival soap after splitting from co-star

Tisha Merry, who is best known for having played Steph Britton on Coronation Street, has been cast in a special edition of Hollyoaks. Former Coronation Street star Tisha Merry has been cast in Hollyoaks. ‌ The actress, 32, became known for starring as Steph Britton on ITV's flagship soap from 2013 until 2018 but has now landed the part of Gemma in Channel 4's post-watershed version of continuing drama series in time for the show's 30th anniversary and will be linked to Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas), who is making a return to the programme. She said: "I'm absolutely over the moon to be joining the cast of Hollyoaks. It's a fabulous opportunity and an incredible time to join as they celebrate their 30th birthday week." ‌ Describing her new alter-ego's bubbly personality, she added: "Gemma is flirty, feisty, and the kind of woman you'd want as your best friend… but never your enemy. She's bold, unpredictable, and trust me when I say, she'll be entering with a bang. I can't wait for you all to meet her." ‌ Meanwhile, Jamie, who is also known for his role as Jake Stone on EastEnders, is making another comeback to Hollyoaks ahead of the milestone teased that the special will see him as his alter-ego 'starts afresh' following his split from Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe). He said: "Warren has been busy since you last saw him, wanting to rebuild his empire and start afresh after the heartbreak with Mercedes. We'll be filming a lot on location and they're pulling out all the stops so I'm looking forward to it." ‌ Little is known about the plot of the episode, but Jorgie Porter will also make a comeback as Theresa McQueen following her maternity leave from the programme, and she said: "It's really exciting to be a part of Laters, I've been in so many over the years and they're always my favourite – hopefully I get a swear word this time. "Theresa is scheming with an unlikely business partner and its fun to see her living life on the edge again. It's incredible to time my return with the Hollyoaks 30th birthday week too, I couldn't miss it." During her time as Bistro waitress Steph on Coronation Street, Tisha saw the character through a number of storylines after being introduced as the best friend of Katy Armstong (Georgia May Foote). Amongst the most prominent were her becoming a victim of revenge porn at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, and she later struck up a relationship with Andy Carver (Oliver Farnworth), before he was killed by Pat Phelan (Connor McIntyre). The builder also murdered Steph's brother Luke Britton, and she made her last appearance when attending his funeral. ‌ But away from the cameras, Tisha also found love with her co-star Alan Halsall, who still plays Tyrone Dobbs to this day. They were in a relationship for five years but announced announced their split in February 2024 after five years of together. At the time, a source told The Sun: 'Alan and Tisha ... started to drift apart and feel the pressure of making their relationship work get on top of them. They realised they weren't on the same page and splitting up felt like the best option. They've been focusing on themselves and surrounding themselves with their own friends. Tisha moved out of Alan's home around a month ago and is throwing herself into work.' Before dating Tisha, Alan was married to former Coronation Street star Lucy-Jo Hudson. The actress played Katy Harris on the soap from 2002 until 2005 before going on to play Donna-Marie Quinn on Hollyoaks. They were married in 2009 and welcomed a daughter together - but the romance collapsed and they were divorced in 2018. ‌ Lucy-Jo has since welcomed a second child - a son named Carter Ray whose father is Lewis Devine. While Alan and Lucy-Jo co-parent their daughter, Lucy-Jo has spoken out about how difficult she sometimes finds this - particularly when Alan would take their daughter away on holiday. She wrote on social media last year: "It's been almost 6 years of me having to share my Sienna, and you'd think I'd be used to it by now but I'm not!" And former I'm A Me Out Of Here! contestant Alan,42, who has starred as Tyrone on the cobbles since 1998, recently looked loved-up with a new girlfriend Ellie Dolan as he attended the wedding of Corrie's Jack P Shepherd over the weekend. And by attending the Celebrity Big Brother winner's wedding, it looks as though their budding romance appears to be going from strength to strength. At the time, a source explained to the Mirror: "Alan is really happy. Ellie is a great girl and they have lots of common. And she gets on so well with Sienna, which is so important to Alan. Sienna is his world."
