India launches e-visa for Kuwaitis: Embassy

KUWAIT: India has launched the e-visa program for Kuwaiti nationals starting from July 13, 2025, the Indian embassy in Kuwait announced. The e-visa covers five key categories: tourism, business, medical, AYUSH/Wellness (including yoga-related travel), and conference, Indian Ambassador to Kuwait Dr Adarsh Swaika said during a press conference Sunday. 'The launch of the e-visa facility for Kuwaiti nationals marks a significant step towards strengthening the bonds between our two countries by making travel to India simpler, faster, and more efficient,' Ambassador Swaika said, adding that it helps enhance people-to-people ties and boost travel between India and Kuwait. The Indian ambassador noted that the tourist e-visa is valid for up to five years, fulfilling a long-standing request from Kuwaiti travelers, saying that business visas are available for up to one year, while medical, medical attendant, and conference visas are granted for shorter, specific durations. 'The entire process is online — [there is] no need to visit the visa application centers," the ambassador said. "You can upload documents, pay fees, and complete the application from home. Biometrics will be done upon arrival at an Indian airport.' He added, 'Visa fees are affordable, with a five-year tourist visa costing just $80, and shorter-duration visas available from $40. Payments can be made via credit/debit card or online gateways.' The launch comes at a time of deepening bilateral relations between India and Kuwait, with growing tourism, trade, and investment flows. 'Direct flights connect nine cities in India, and the number of Kuwaiti tourists visiting India is rising steadily,' the Ambassador noted. He stated, 'In 2024, approximately 8,000–9,000 tourist visas were issued to Kuwaiti nationals. "E-visa holders may enter India through 32 designated airports and five seaports. For those who prefer, the traditional method of obtaining a Regular/Paper Visa from the Indian Consular Application Centers (ICAC) in Kuwait will continue to be available."

Now Kuwaiti Citizens Can Apply for E-Visas To India

KUWAIT CITY, July 13: The Ambassador of India to Kuwait, Dr. Adarsh Swaika, officially announced the launch of an electronic visa (e-visa) service for Kuwaiti nationals, effective Sunday. Describing the development as a 'qualitative shift,' he emphasized that the initiative will significantly streamline travel procedures and deepen the strategic partnership between India and Kuwait. E-Visa Categories and Application Process Dr. Swaika stated that the new system is fully digital and does not require applicants to visit any Indian visa application centers. The entire process—from form submission and document upload to payment—can be completed online through the designated portal. The e-visa will be available in five main categories: Tourist Visa Business Visa Medical Visa Conference Visa (To attend Seminars/Workshops or similar events) AYUSH Visa (for those seeking treatment or training in traditional Indian medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Yoga) One of the key highlights of this initiative is the five-year multiple-entry tourist visa, which will cost just $80. Visa fees for other categories will vary between $40 and $80, depending on the duration and purpose of the visit. 'The application process is very simple,' Dr. Swaika explained. 'Kuwaiti applicants can complete everything online, and biometric data such as fingerprints will be collected upon arrival at an Indian airport.' He also noted that the typical processing time for an e-visa is 3 to 4 working days, although some initial technical challenges may occur as the system is newly introduced. Motivations Behind the E-Visa Launch: 5 Key Reasons The ambassador outlined five strategic reasons behind India's decision to offer e-visas to Kuwaiti citizens: Strengthening Bilateral Ties: The move reflects the historically strong and friendly relations between India and Kuwait. Boosting Tourism: India seeks to attract more Kuwaiti tourists to explore its diverse cultural and natural attractions. Expanding Economic Relations: The increasing volume of Kuwaiti investment in India underscores the need for easier business travel. Growing Indian Business Presence in Kuwait: A significant number of Indian companies are now operating in Kuwait, necessitating easier reciprocal travel. Encouraging Cultural Exchange: The initiative aims to foster greater people-to-people contact and mutual cultural understanding. Current Travel Volume and Air Connectivity Dr. Swaika shared that between 8,000 and 9,000 Kuwaiti citizens traveled to India on tourist visas in the previous year. With the introduction of the e-visa facility, he expects these numbers to rise substantially. He also highlighted the robust air connectivity between the two nations. Under the civil aviation agreement, 12,000 weekly flight seats are allocated to each side. These flights are operated by Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways on the Kuwaiti side, and by IndiGo, Air India Express, and Akasa Air on the Indian side, connecting Kuwait directly to nine Indian cities. Student Visas Remain Paper-Based While the e-visa platform covers a wide range of travel purposes, student visas are not yet part of the electronic system. Dr. Swaika clarified that such visas must still be obtained through conventional visa centers via paper applications.

After uproar, Prada plans ‘Made In India' footwear collection

MUMBAI, July 12: Prada announced on Friday that it is seeking a partnership with makers of traditional Indian "artisanal footwear," following backlash over its recent launch of sandals resembling 12th-century Indian designs. The Italian luxury brand sparked controversy two weeks ago after unveiling open-toe ethnic sandals during a Milan fashion show, which bore a strong resemblance to Kolhapuri chappals — traditional footwear named after the historic city of Kolhapur in Maharashtra state. After photos from the show went viral, Indian artisans criticized the brand for not acknowledging the origins of the design. Facing growing pressure, Prada admitted late last month that the sandals were inspired by ancient Indian styles. The uproar fueled a surge in demand for authentic Indian sandals, with artisans and sellers viewing the controversy as an opportunity to showcase the traditional craft and tap into a wave of national pride. Prada said it held a virtual meeting on Friday with the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, which represents around 3,000 Kolhapuri sandal artisans, to explore potential collaboration opportunities. 'The next step will be for Prada's supply chain team to meet with a range of artisanal footwear manufacturers,' the company stated. The Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce confirmed that Lorenzo Bertelli—head of corporate social responsibility at Prada and son of the company's owners—participated in the meeting. During the discussions, Prada reportedly expressed interest in launching a limited-edition, "Made in India" collection of Kolhapuri-inspired sandals in collaboration with Indian artisans. While India's luxury market remains relatively small, it is expanding, with wealthy consumers increasingly spending on high-end fashion, luxury cars, and expensive watches. Prada currently does not operate any retail stores in India, and its products are generally accessible only to affluent Indian shoppers purchasing goods abroad. The sandal controversy generated days of debate on social media, with critics, artisans, and Indian politicians calling on Prada to give proper credit to India's rich heritage.
