FM asks PSBs to step up deposit mobilisation, deepen corporate lending
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday told public sector banks (PSBs) that sustained efforts are needed to improve deposit mobilisation to support ongoing credit growth. She also emphasised the need to deepen corporate lending in productive sectors while maintaining robust underwriting and risk management standards.
The finance minister chaired a high-level meeting in New Delhi to review the performance of PSBs for FY2024–25. Key areas discussed included financial parameters, credit offtake, financial inclusion, customer service, grievance redressal, digital banking, and cyber security. The meeting was attended by Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary; Secretary, Department of Financial Services, M Nagaraju; managing directors of PSBs; and senior officials of the Department of Financial Services (DFS).
'PSBs were advised to undertake special drives, make effective use of their branch networks, and deepen outreach in semi-urban and rural areas,' the finance ministry said.
The finance minister also directed banks to ensure faster grievance redressal, offer simplified digital platforms, and provide multilingual services both online and offline.
'Maintaining clean, customer-friendly physical branches and expanding in metro and urban centres to keep pace with urbanisation was also highlighted,' the finance ministry added.
During the same period, net non-performing assets (NPAs) of PSBs declined sharply from 1.24 per cent to 0.52 per cent. Net profit increased from ₹1.04 lakh crore to ₹1.78 lakh crore, and dividend payouts rose from ₹20,964 crore to ₹34,990 crore.
Sitharaman was also apprised that PSBs are adequately capitalised, with their capital to risk-weighted asset ratio (CRAR) standing at 16.15 per cent as of March 2025.
She highlighted the importance of adequate staffing in banks, stressing that all existing and arising vacancies must be filled promptly to improve service delivery. Banks were also encouraged to scale up branch expansion in underserved areas such as the North-east. The finance minister underlined the need to strengthen the Business Correspondent (BC) network to ensure last-mile access to banking services, especially in rural and remote regions.
Sitharaman was briefed on the progress under the New Credit Assessment Model for MSMEs, launched on 6 March 2025, under which 1.97 lakh MSME loans amounting to ₹60,000 crore have already been sanctioned. Banks were instructed to scale up implementation of the model to broaden access to capital and expedite credit flow to small and medium businesses.
'The finance minister has asked banks to increase aggressive lending following the interest rate cuts. Banks should provide loans to as many people as possible and focus on higher lending compared to last year,' a source said.
Banks were also advised to expand their presence in GIFT City to support India's ambitions in international financial services, explore global opportunities, and increase participation in the India International Bullion Exchange (IIBX).
On Thursday, Sitharaman chaired a meeting in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, with officials of GIFT City and the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA).
'Lending to the energy sector, particularly in renewable and sustainable areas, was underscored as a national priority to advance India's green growth agenda. In line with the Budget 2025–26 announcement to develop indigenously designed small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), banks were advised to develop credit models to support this critical sector,' the finance ministry added.

Arunachal land for defence: SC stays Rs 410 cr recompense; Ref Court fixed compensation for land eight times of mkt rate
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday stayed an order of the Itanagar bench of Gauhati HC asking the Centre to deposit 50% of Rs 418 crore compensation, which the govt alleged was vitiated by forgery, for acquisition of 537 acres of land for defence projects in remote Indo-China border areas of Arunachal Pradesh. Appearing for the Union govt, additional solicitor general S D Sanjay told a bench led by Justice K V Viswanathan that one man forged and fabricated power of attorneys of 102 landowners and approached the Reference court for reassessment of the market value of the land, which the authorities had pegged at Rs 70 crore and paid the landowners. Sanjay said despite the govt pointing out the mischief played by one person, as against the rest of the landowners having recorded their satisfaction in cumulatively receiving Rs 70 crore as compensation, the Reference Court determined the market price of land in the remote areas to be eight times the rate arrived at by authorities. How did the land in the remote Indo-China border areas of Arunachal Pradesh rise from Rs 10-12 lakh per acre to nearly 80 lakh per acre, the ASG asked. The bench said it was the Union govt counsel which had agreed to deposit 10% of Rs 418 crore before the Itanagar bench and hence, it must do the same. The SC directed the Centre to deposit Rs 41.8 crore before the Itanagar Bench registry and ordered suspension of operation of the Reference Court's order. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending Local Enterprise Accounting Software [Click Here] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo The Union govt has pointed out that the redetermination of compensation amount was vitiated by 'forgery, fabrication and fraud played by one Dagli Riba, who alone had moved the Reference Court based on forged and fabricated power of attorneys of 102 landowners.' The Centre said the landowners had received compensation at the rate determined earlier and signed the deed of acceptance in November 2023 and did not approach the reference court for enhancement of compensation. It accused Riba of taking advantage of the situation to play fraud with the intention of pocketing the arbitrarily enhanced compensation amount. The defence ministry had on Feb 16, 2023, approved a proposal to acquire 537 acres in the general area of Bame village under Basar Circle, Leparada district in Arunachal Pradesh (border area) for establishment of Corps Ammunition Point. It had fixed the market rate of Rs 12.9 lakh per acre as compensation, totalling Rs 70 crore.

AP Chambers seeks Centre's support for tourism projects in AP
Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Federation (AP Chambers) presented a proposal to Union Minister of Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat during his visit to Vijayawada on Thursday. The minister welcomed the ideas and invited a delegation to meet him in New Delhi to discuss them further. AP Chambers president Potluri Bhaskara Rao noted Andhra Pradesh's prime location, extensive coastline, rich cultural heritage, and spiritual tourism sites, positioning the state as a strong tourism hub. The Chambers urged the Union government to fund key tourism projects in the state. Rao proposed a coastal beach corridor between Suryalanka (Bapatla District) and Vodarevu (Chirala, Prakasam District), a 10-km stretch with 40-50 mid-scale resorts owned by local entrepreneurs. Without a proper beach road, development is limited. A new road could attract 20-25 high-end resorts, transforming the area into a Mini Goa-like destination. Rao suggested promoting Visakhapatnam as the 'Gateway to Andhra Pradesh' through government marketing efforts. He recommended an 'Open Sky Policy' for Visakhapatnam International Airport with a hub-and-spoke model to increase tourist arrivals. Visakhapatnam beach should gain 'Beach Destination' status alongside Goa and Kovalam in the Union Ministry of Tourism's 'Incredible India' campaign. The Chambers proposed developing Manginapudi Beach at Machilipatnam as a beachfront tourism destination under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme, aligning with the upcoming Machilipatnam Greenfield Port and modern Fishing Harbour to boost connectivity and tourism. Monuments and natural sites like Lepakshi Group of Temples, Gandikota Grand Canyon and Fort, Belum Caves, Guntupalli Group of Monuments, and Salihundam Group of Buddhist Monuments could attract UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The Chambers urged the Union government to pursue these designations. Major pilgrimage sites like Tirupati, Srisailam, Simhachalam, and Amaravati need focused promotion under the PRASHAD and Swadesh Darshan schemes. Rao proposed developing the 'Indrakeeladri-Berm Park-Bhavani Island' area in Vijayawada as a Riverfront Mega Tourism Hub, integrating spiritual, wellness, adventure, culinary, ropeway, boating, and water fleet components with the Amaravati Capital Region. The Chambers also suggested a 'Visakhapatnam-Bhimili-Bhogapuram beachfront corridor' as a Mega Beachfront Tourism Corridor with central funding, aligning with ongoing tourism infrastructure upgrades in the north coastal region. Finally, the 'Godavari Riverfront Districts' could become a 'Konaseema Agri and Rural Tourism Corridor' with central financial support, leveraging the ecotourism potential of the Godavari River and its tributaries.

BESS units at solar power plants across Karnataka
Bidadi: Karnataka's Energy Minister K J George announced that battery storage systems must be installed in all solar power plants across the state in future. He was speaking at the inauguration of a fully automated 5 GWh Battery Energy Storage unit set up by Pace Digitek's Lineage Power in Bidadi. 'The solar power generated during the day must be stored for use at night. To achieve this, battery storage systems capable of storing at least two hours of solar power must be integrated into all solar power plants,' George said. He emphasised the importance of storage in strengthening renewable energy infrastructure. 'Renewable energy now contributes to 65 percent of Karnataka's total power generation. Although solar and wind energy production has grown significantly, effective storage systems are essential to capture this energy and supply it as needed. Storage ensures grid stability and enables better energy management, especially during periods of demand. The central government is also promoting storage projects to support this effort, and it is encouraging to see private companies actively participating,' he said. Highlighting Karnataka's legacy in the power sector, George added, 'Karnataka has always been a leader in the power generation. The first hydroelectric power project in Asia was established during the reign of Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar. We must continue to build on this rich legacy. A new pumped storage project is now being launched at Sharavathi with the approval of the central government. I thank Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy for his support and cooperation.' Detailing the state's storage roadmap, George said, 'Although Karnataka generates more power than its demand, we currently lack adequate storage. To address this, we plan to implement major storage projects, including 2000 MW through the Sharavathi Pumped Storage, 1500 MW at Varahi, 1000 MW at Pavagada, and a 2000 MW battery storage facility at Rapte. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Sharavathi project has already been approved by the Central Electricity Authority. The project will be developed between Talakalale in Shivamogga and the Gerusoppa reservoirs in Uttara Kannada, downstream of Linganamakki.' Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, who inaugurated the battery storage unit, said that battery storage systems are crucial for achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).' The central government is placing high priority on developing storage infrastructure to ensure that solar and wind power can be effectively utilized even during non-generation hours. It is encouraging that Karnataka is leading with projects like Sharavathi and Varahi pumped storage. Battery storage also offers immense investment potential, and I urge entrepreneurs to explore opportunities in this growing sector,' he further added, 'The first revolution in India was electricity, followed by television, and then the Internet and smart phones, which transformed our lives. Now, the next big change will come through battery storage systems, which will redefine how we consume and manage power. We are all set to witness this transformation.' T D Rajegowda, MLA and Chairman, KREDL, S R Mahesh, MLA, K P Rudrappaiah, Managing Director, KREDL, Prakashnath Swamiji, Avadhoota Vinay Guruji, Venugopal Rao, Chairman & Managing Director, Pace Digitek-Lineage Power, and other dignitaries were present at the event.
