And Arsenal were 1-0 down after just six minutes when Anthony Elanga - signed from Nottingham Forest - opened the scoring.
A cross came into the box and the Swedish international appeared to accidentally kick the ball with his right foot onto his left boot.
But the diverted strike threw keeper Raya off and put Newcastle into the lead.
Despite Elanga's miskick sending Raya the wrong way - some Gunners fans online fumed with the Spaniard.
One said: "I've seen enough. Get Kepa on."
One fumed: "No one marking Elanga and what was Raya doing there."
Another said: "Sub Kepa on, Raya is A**E."

Arsenal beaten by Tottenham as Viktor Gyokeres makes debut

Gyokeres was named on the bench by Gunners boss Mikel Arteta days after being able to seal a big-money transfer to the Premier League club. Arteta turned to Gyokeres with 14 minutes left of the friendly and with Arsenal behind after Pape Sarr's long-range effort on the stroke of half-time, but Swedish forward Gyokeres was a largely isolated figure and failed to stop a 1-0 loss. After a flurry of early Arsenal set-pieces in the first north London derby to be played outside of England, Spurs' Pedro Porro hit the post in the ninth minute direct from a corner. Outrageous from Pape Sarr 😮‍💨 Don't miss the action – watch the second half live on SPURSPLAY 📺 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) July 31, 2025 Wilson Odobert and Richarlison also struck the woodwork for Tottenham during a first half which seemed destined to end goalless until Sarr's sublime intervention. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya raced out to pass to Myles Lewis-Skelly, who was dispossessed and Sarr was alert to chip into the empty net from close to the halfway line in the 45th minute. Chances were few and far between in the second half before Arteta turned to his bench after Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz and summer recruit Martin Zubimendi had been wasteful in front of goal. Gyokeres was introduced for Havertz in the 76th minute and while he fashioned a late missed chance for Zubimendi, the former Sporting Lisbon attacker's first appearance for Arsenal ended in defeat.

Newcastle's anger with Liverpool grows after Alexander Isak's latest move

Alexander Isak is training alone at former club Real Sociedad as he attempts to force his way out of Newcastle and towards becoming Liverpool's latest big money signing Newcastle United are growing increasingly frustrated with Liverpool as the Alexander Isak transfer saga rumbles on without development. ‌ The Toon are yet to receive a bid for their leading goalscorer despite Isak making it clear that he is keen to leave St James' Park amid supposed interest from the Premier League 's reigning champions. Sweden star Isak, 25, was not taken on tour to Asia by Eddie Howe, though the club said it is because he has a thigh injury. Yet it turns out that Isak is now in Spain, training alone at the facilities of his former club Real Sociedad, while he waits for his future to be sorted out. ‌ Liverpool are one of few clubs capable of affording Newcastle 's £120m asking price for one of the game's most prolific centre-forwards, whose current salary is also £120,000 per week. However no formal submission of interest has been lodged and that has left Isak's current club irritated, according to their local media. ‌ Liverpool have already usurped Newcastle to the signing of France Under-21 striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt but if Isak digs his heels in Eddie Howe's side may be left with no other option but to enter negotiations with the Reds. Arne Slot has seen his dressing room boosted by signings worth close to £300m already this window, though there is an expectation that further departures must take place before an Isak bid is sent. Luis Diaz departed this week in a £65m deal to Bayern Munich, following Jarrell Quansah and Caoimhin Kelleher out the door. But Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa are also being linked with moves away in transfers that will offset the club's high spending. Newcastle, meanwhile, continue to show an interest in Brentford star Yoane Wissa - suggesting that they are already putting plans in place for life without Isak. The Bees are reluctant to sell another forward, however, having seen Bryan Mbeumo head to Manchester United in a £65m switch.

England Lionesses hero heartbreakingly reveals her Nan passed away on morning of Euro 2025 final

Ella Toone was part of the England Lionesses side that beat Spain on penalties to win the Euro 2025 final last weekend, just hours after sadly losing her grandmother Ella Toone has revealed that her nan sadly passed away on the morning of England's Euro 2025 triumph. ‌ Toone, 25, was one of the Lionesses standout players at the Euros, which culminated in Sarina Wiegman's side beating Spain on penalties last Sunday. But the Manchester United attacker's nan heartbreakingly died on the morning of the final. ‌ She confirmed the news in a social media post, which included some beautiful words in tribute to her 'famous Nana Maz'. ‌ Toone wrote: "Even in the highest of highs life can hit you with the lowest of lows. My Nana Maz took her last breath on the morning of our Euro final. I have comfort in knowing she got to watch from the best seat in the house with Dad, her favourite person. "I'll miss you forever nan but I'll cherish the special memories we made, there isn't enough words I can possibly say to sum up the person you were, but I'm grateful you were my nanna. "My football loving, crazy, funny Nan. All those years ago when you put a bet on at the bookies that I would play for England one day & on the day you leave us we bring it home again. "You always knew it. Say hello to our angels up there, grandads been waiting for you for a while ❤️ love you always, our 'famous' Nanna Maz x." Toone played five times for England on their way to victory in the final, which saw them retain the European crown they clinched three years ago.
