Property tax: PMC nets Rs40cr in 3 mths
Patna: Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has recorded impressive success in property tax collection, amassing Rs 40 crore in the first quarter of the 2025-26 financial year, achieving over 28% of its annual target. This collection follows a 5% rebate offered to property owners for prompt payment, which was valid till Monday, June 30. The municipal body has set an ambitious target of Rs 141 crore for the financial year, significantly higher than the Rs 117 crore collected in 2024-25. Ashish Kumar, additional municipal commissioner, confirmed the achievement. "The amount represents over 28.36% of the annual target of Rs 141 crore set for the current financial year, spanning from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026. The 5% discount was available until Monday. Last year, the civic body collected Rs 117 crore in property tax," he told this newspaper. The PMC oversees an area of 108.87 square kilometres, covering nearly five lakh households, including residential, govt and commercial properties, spread across 75 wards and six circles – Azimabad, Bankipur, Kankarbagh, New Capital, Patliputra and Patna City. With the deadline approaching, property owners queued at PMC counters to pay both their holding tax and solid waste management charges. Officials have directed that tax counters remain open on Sundays and public holidays with regular operating hours extended from 9am to 9pm in two shifts. Municipal commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar added, "The 5% rebate for timely payments applied only to taxes paid between April 1 and June 30. From July 1 to Sept 30, there will be neither discount nor penalty. From Oct1 to March 31, a 1.5% penalty will be charged for late payment." Earlier this year, the PMC issued demand notices embedded with QR codes in all 75 wards. These notices allowed property owners to scan the code and view their outstanding dues. In addition to the counters, online payments can be made through the PMC's official website and chatbot service.
